Precious just won another audience award, Chicago International Film Festival this time.

Thinking of Obama getting the Nobel prize and the general spirit of change, I think Precious is in a great spot for a BP win. That'd be quite a "sign"/statement.

I still can't believe Monique is going to get 'Academy Award nominee' written before her name in all future projects. But Precious looks to have positioned itself and looks sure to grab some Oscar gold. Can the Academy resist giving Oprah her own Oscar?

Farmiga is due for a nomination. The Wilder comparisons have got me worried about this movie being all hype. To this day I haven't bothered to see any of the director's previous movies.

Re: Well...the 2009 Contenders Discussion Thread
Hmm, Precious is not nearly getting the raves of a possible BP winner. http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/preciousNo 100-scores with 6 reviews in, including those of HR and Variety. Also 88% at RT is good, but not amazing, the average of 7.4/10 is the same. At least with the critics, Up in the Air will play better, I assume.

Re: Well...the 2009 Contenders Discussion Thread
It's definitely not winning NYFCC for sure. New York critics are killing it.
I believe Up in the Air has the upper hand now as well, at least on the director side, as Precious is mostly praised for its performances.

Re: Well...the 2009 Contenders Discussion Thread
Sidibe is really looking like a very good bet this year.
Something in me still can't see Up in the Air as the BP winner. I think there is a chance of a BP/BD split maybe...
If Invictus really makes it big and Freeman somehow can become the Best Actor frontrunner...then it could shift in its favor.
Nine I can't see winning. The Hurt Locker neither simply because it is way way way too small. Had The Hurt Locker made $50+ million, I'd strongly consider it for Best Picture.

Re: Well...the 2009 Contenders Discussion Thread
New contender for this year "Crazy Heart": http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/the_big ... eason.htmlQuote: Fox Searchlight jumps 'Crazy Heart' into Oscar season November 3, 2009 | 3:34 pm
We knew Fox Searchlight was in love with "Crazy Heart," the low-budget country music drama that stars Jeff Bridges as a faded, booze-fueled singer named Bad Blake who's trying to get his career back on track. Written and directed by first-time filmmaker Scott Cooper, the film costars Maggie Gyllenhaal (playing a small-town reporter), Robert Duvall and Colin Farrell.
Searchlight acquired the film in July, taking it off the market with a low seven-figure bid, enamored by the film's acting and nuanced storytelling. Its original plan was to release the movie in the spring of 2010. But the studio must be smelling award-season gold, because my sources say the movie is moving into Oscar territory, with Searchlight now planning a limited Dec. 11 release in Los Angeles and New York before taking the film wider early next year.
Since Searchlight's only serious Oscar contender, as of now, is its well-reviewed summer release, "(500) Days of Summer," the studio must be betting that Bridges -- always a favorite with the academy, especially as he's aged into Nick Nolte-style gray-bearded grizzly guy -- could land some best actor nominations. Searchlight suddenly sent out screening notices today, another tipoff that the movie is looking for some early word-of-mouth enthusiasm from the blogosphere.
My favorite movie-music magician, T Bone Burnett, supervised the film's soundtrack, so I'm betting it will have some real C&W authenticity. As soon as I get a chance to see it, I'll report in on whether we've got another serious Oscar candidate or not.

Well, Precious stands at 73/100 at MC with 15 reviews in and has 3 100-scores.
It is definitely not getting the same level of praise as Slumdog, No Country or The Departed, not even close.
RT is 87% and 7.5/10 with 47 reviews, COTC is 92% with 7.6/10.

Since the comparison is bound to happen, might as well say it: But it is better received than Crash.

Heh, yeah, I know. But Crash is an oddity and Crash starred half of Hollywood. The latter is definitely a big difference.

Re: Well...the 2009 Contenders Discussion Thread
Still, when you have the backing of Oprah and Ebert, it's a force to reckon with. But I agree, it is facing a lot more obstacles, and Ebert calling it a "great American film" makes me think if the theme is universal enough for say the British contingency to be behind it.
Just received another 100 from WSJ to make it 4 at MC.

Precious can still win Best Picture. Not Best Director, though. That's between Reitman and Bigelow.

Why does everyone think Bigelow could win? With five Picture nominees she would almost certainly be a Lone Director at best.

Looking forward to ten best picture nominees. Really expecting The Hurt Locker and Up in the Air to be there, the other 8, hmmm, not so sure.
Would love to see Up and Inglorious Basterds make the cut too.

Re: Well...the 2009 Contenders Discussion Thread
I think Reitman has a solid lead in the director race at this point, considering the film's reviews and the fact that he will be against either previous winners (Eastwood, Jackson, Cameron) or directors who were never nominated (Bigelow, Daniels, Scherfig, Hoffman). The only exceptions are Marshall and Tarantino, but musical genre is a handicap for the director to win with and IB is not a contender for major wins.
