Post Re: Intl. Box-Office: Up #1 again, Fast & Furious passes $200m!
I actually check the UK charts every week, so I did notice that and thought it was interesting. But what's far more amazing is the incredible hold for Up in UK! Was there some sort of holiday or what? I think it dropped less than 20% actually in its second weekend...

No holiday here!

Just insane WOM. Plus it sold out ALOT last weekend, so alot of people might have missed it.

People would have been waiting for 3D....UK is going mad for 3D here. And i beleive UP broke some sort of 3D record, which Final Destination held and My Bloody Valentine held!

Just shows how popular 3D is in the UK.

Looks like it has a shot at beating Ice Age 3 in UK. I see it being a lock for £25 million with a shot at £35 million.

I'd say £35M seems a wee bit out of reach.

A Christmas Carol opens here in 3 weeks and will probably take all the 3D screens from it.

£30M is very do-able though.

Actually, FANTASTIC MR FOX opens here on Friday, that might hurt UP a bit.

Well world financial crisis might be on the lose but looks like Polish Box Office will have a record year. Last year there were 33.7 milion tickets sold ( a record ), this year so far there are 30.5 milion tickets sold. With two and a half months left and few big movies coming up it looks like there is big chance of reaching 38.7 milion tickets. That would be a 15% increase over last year. With many new cinemas opening in smaller cities the audience should go up in next few years :)

Pretty good year in Germany too. We could reach up to 19-20 movies this year with over 2 million admissions, for the first time in a few years. Also, Ice Age 3 was really really huge and the local Wickie is making very impressive numbers as well, heading for around 5.5 million admissions or so.

Up retains the overseas crown as $19m boosts tally to $324m

25 October, 2009 | By Jeremy Kay

Disney/Pixar’s Up dominated the Hollywood competition overseas for the third straight weekend thanks to an estimated $19m haul from 4,789 screens in 26 territories that propelled the running total to $324.2m.

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International (WDSMPI) films grossed almost $35m in total as G-Force added $8m, Surrogates took a further $3.7m, and The Proposal crossed $150m.

The highlight from the other studios was Sony’s romantic comedy The Ugly Truth, which crossed $100m just in time before Sony unleashes the Michael Jackson tribute film This Is It in 108 territories next weekend.

* Returning to WDSMPI, Up has now amassed $617m worldwide and is currently tracking 5% ahead of the entire run of Wall-E. The film stayed top in seven territories, led by the UK where $4.8m from 750 screens maintained pole position for the third consecutive weekend and raised the tally to $30.3m, tracking comfortably ahead of Ratatouille and Wall-E now.
* Elsewhere Up stayed top in Italy where $4.8m for $14.6m means it already overtaken Wall-E’s entire run. In Holland $2m from 193 for $6.4m has passed Wall-E’s final total, while $2.8m from two weeks in Poland, $3.7m from three in Belgium and $760,000 from 180 for $2.3m in Sweden kept Up high above the competition.
* After six weekends in Germany Up added $1.4m from 660 sites for $26.2m, again beating the entire run of Wall-E.

G-Force’s $8m weekend haul from 3,013 screens in 35 territories raised the tally to $138.9m and pushed the global running total to $257.2m.

The family action film ranked third place in Germany as $2.8m from 527 cinemas raised the total to $8.8m after two. It added $1.8m in France from 49 for $5.2m after two and $1.6m in Spain from 461 for $9.4m. Scheduled releases include China on November 24, South Korea on December 1 and Japan on March 20, 2010.

Surrogate sadded $3.7m from 2,244 screens in 31 countries for $52.5m and the sci-fi thriller opens next weekend in France and Portugal. Romantic comedy hit The Proposal added $900,000 from 870 in 21 markets for $150.7m and stands at $314.5m worldwide.

* The $7m haul for Sony Pictures Releasing International’s animated family release Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs came from 2,905 screens in 50 markets and raised the tally to $43.3m.
* Weekend business was dominated by a number one $3m number one debut in Russia from 443 screens and a $1.2m number four launch in France from 631.

The Ugly Truth generated $5.8m from 2,043 screens in 64 markets to push it over the $100m mark and settle on $102.4m. Spain led the holdovers on $2m from 357 for $5.2m after two and Germany produced a further $1.3m from 514 for $13.2m after four.

Sony’s lighthearted drama Julie & Julia added $3.3m from 1,155 screens in 40 markets for $20.9m and opened in fifth place in Italy on $850,000 from 155. Greece delivered second place on $340,000 from 40 and New Zealand produced a $300,000 number one launch from 68.

Sci-fi hit District 9added $3.1m industry-wide for $82.6m. Of that, $63.7m comes from Sony territories. The Taking Of Pelham 123 grossed $2.6m from 1,955 screens in 30 markets and stands at $83.5m. The thriller remake opened in China on $2m from 1,190 screens for an unconfirmed ranking.

Sony’s road movie-horror Zombieland added $1.2m from 480 in its first ten territories for an early $8.9m. The mayhem visited Scandinavia, taking $130,000 in Sweden from 22 for fourth place, $105,000 in Denmark from 20 for fifth place, and $100,000 in Norway from 11 for fifth.

Mandate International’s Saw VI grossed $5m from its first day-and-date weekend and full figures are expected this week.

Universal/UPI’s Inglourious Basterds is closing in on $175m after $4.5m from 2,640 sites in 50 elevated the running total to $173.5m. Despite poor weather the film launched at the top in South Africa on $140,000 from 59. The next release will be South Korea on October 29 and Japan is the final market on November 20.

* The comedy Couples Retreat added $3.9m from 950 in seven for an early $17.2m. The UK was the key driver, ranking fourth after $1.5m from 380 boosted the total to $5.9m. The second weekend in Russia produced $1m from 280 venues for $3.1m after two and Couples Retreat has already overtaken the lifetime totals of Wedding Crashers ($1.4m), The Break-Up ($1.8m), and You, Me And Dupree ($1.9m).

After really slow start(mostly due to staggered release), up looks like picking up to respective OS total(close to Ratatouille).

IB should make > 200M OS.

This is from LAST WEEKEND's Variety, but those two movies are reported mostly too late for the Sunday news and they belong to this year's international success stories:

Quote:
Warner Bros. and local distribs continue to see solid results for 3D title "The Final Destination," which placed No. 8 for the weekend, grossing $5.4 million in its eighth week in release from 1,715 playdates in 50 territories. Foreign cume is $103 million, well ahead of the domestic total of $66.1 million. Worldwide haul is $169.1 million.

"Fame" redo grossed an estimated $5.3 million for the frame to come in No. 9. MGM distributed in the U.S., but foreign rights to the film were sold off. Foreign cume is $35.1 million, while pic has only grossed $21.9 domestically. Worldwide total is $57 million.

So FD4 should be at $108m or so and FAME at $40m plus...

"The generally listless pre-holiday season overseas wound down over the weekend with Pixar/Disney's "Up" claiming the No. 1 spot on the foreign circuit for the fifth stanza this year with the relatively modest tally of $19 million drawn from 4,789 screens in 26 territories.

Offshore boxoffice action overall is certain to surge this week as "This Is It," the film cobbled together from footage of Michael Jackson rehearsing for his planned comeback tour, rolls out via Sony at 108 overseas territories.

Pre-Halloween arrivals were Mandate International's "Saw VI", which grossed an estimated $5 million from 800 screens in eight territories including the U.K., where the latest in the horror-thriller franchise opened at No. 2 in the market, and Universal's "Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant," premiering in three markets (including a No. 2 Russia bow) for $2.9 million overall from 685 locations.

In its solo-market bow in the U.K., 20th Century Fox's "Fantastic Mr. Fox" drew $2.6 million from 483 locations, sufficient for a No. 3 market ranking. The animation comedy from director Wes Anderson, based on a Roald Dahl novel, commenced its commercial run after opening the London Film Festival. Among those voicing various characters are George Clooney, Bill Murray and Meryl Streep.

Playing strictly holdover engagements, "Up" took the No. 1 spot in seven territories including the U.K. for a third straight weekend with $4.8 million from 750 screens for a market cume of $30.3 million. Italy also produced a first-place ranking as did the Benelux, Poland, Sweden and Denmark.

With an international cume of $324.2 million, the latest Pixar animation title in 3D sprinted past the $309 million international gross total racked up by its predecessor, 2008's "WALL-E." "Up," with Japan still to play in early December, still lags by $90.8 million the international total accumulated in 2007 by Pixar's "Ratatouille."

"Up's" worldwide gross stands at $617 million.

No. 2 on the weekend was "G-Force," Disney's animation title produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, which grabbed $8 million from 3,013 situations in 35 territories for a foreign cume of $138.9 million. Its worldwide tally stands at $257.2 million.

Third was Sony's "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs," yet another animation outing, which grossed $7 million from 2,905 screens in 50 markets for a cume of $43.3 million. Sony said the opened at No. 1 in Russia with $3 million collected from 443 sites.

At No. 4 was UGC Distribution's solo-market entry "Lucky Luke," which made its No. 1 France debut at 600 dates for an estimated $6.2 million. The film is a Western, a live-action adaptation of a French comic book character, a gunslinger (portrayed by Jean Dujardin) charged with cleaning up a small town.

Coming in fifth was Sony's "The Ugly Truth," which registered $5.8 million from 2,043 sites in 64 markets. The romantic comedy co-starring Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler surpassed the $100 million-gross market overseas on the weekend, and its cume stands at $102.4 million.

The Weinstein Co./Universal's "Inglourious Basterds" opened at No. 1 in South Africa and drew $4.5 million on the weekend from 2,640 screens in 50 markets. Overseas total is $173.5 million. In France, "Le Petit Nicolas," Wild Bunch Distribution's release of a live-action film based on a French children's book, held a strong No. 2 in its fourth round with $4.1 million drawn from 600 screens for a market cume of $29.3 million.

No. 1 in Germany is Constantin/Film Verheih's "Die Papstin" (Pope Joan), a pan-European co-production based on Donna Woolfolk's novel about a ninth-century woman who disguises herself as a man to rise within Vatican ranks. The English-language costume drama, with John Goodman cast as Pope Sergius, opened at 461 locations for an estimated $4 million.

Universal's "Couples Retreat," which finished at No. 5 domestically, drew $3.9 million from 950 locations in seven territories for an early international cume of $17.2 million. Disney's "Surrogates," with Bruce Willis, upped its cume to $52.5 million thanks to a $3.7 million weekend at 2,244 situations in 31 markets.

Sony's "Julie & Julia," with Meryl Streep as Julia Child, opened in four markets, including a No. 1 New Zealand bow, for a total of $3.3 million on the weekend from 1,155 screens in 40 territories and a cume of $20.9 million. Sci-fi drama "District 9" from Sony and other distributors grossed $3.1 million and lifted its cume to $82.6 million, of which $63.7 million derives from markets handled by Sony.

In Spain, "Agora," Fox's acquisition of director Alejandro Amenabar's English-language costume epic, drew $2.8 million in its third weekend from 472 sites for a market cume of $21 million. Sony's subway drama "The Taking of Pelham I 2 3" opened in China to an estimated $2 million from 1,190 screens, pushing the Denzel Washington-John Travolta vehicle's overseas cume to $83.5 million.

Other international cumes: Sony's "Zombieland," $8.9 million; Fox's "Aliens in the Attic," $32.9 million; Universal's "Fast & Furious," $204.2 million; Fox's "All About Steve," $957,560; Universal's "The Invention of Lying," $8.9 million (from the U.K. and Ireland only); Fox's "(500) Days of Summer," $17.5 million; Rezo Film's "Mademoiselle Chambon," $2.4 million; Fox's "Jennifer's Body," $7.3 million; and Disney's "The Proposal," $150.7 million."

Apparently it is getting a very limited release in Germany. I read something about 20-50 theatres (normal horror movies usually get around 150-200, blockbusters get over 700). On top of that it got Cert. 18.

It's opening against This is it! in Poland so I don't expect to much from JB. ( but lately horror movies had a good streak so maybe JB will suprise )

As for This is it! - it's looking at big opening above 300k adm over 5 days ( hell it sold already over 100k tickets, which is something new here )

The drop looked ordinary yesterday. Now it is sub 30% drop with half term holidays ahead. I can see Up making $10M+ over next 7 days. It should definitely beat Rat.

Terrific gross for Up after three weeks. £30 million is definitely happening now, IMO.

The Final Destination is at $105.7 million according to the HR update.

It still has the following markets ahead:

Italy
Venezuela
Brazil
Spain

I think $190+ million worldwide is happening for sure now.

Saw VI opened at Number 2 at the UK box office with the 2nd lowest opening weekend of the series (behind Saw.)

Saw £1,239,813
Saw II £2,189,212
Saw III £2,522,521
Saw IV £2,482,889
Saw V £2,436,817
Saw VI £1,736,287

£700,000 down on Saw V.

$1.7M is still a great opening in the UK for a horror film.
