 Re: Some Friday numbers
I wonder how Couples made that much. I guess there's something to be said for being the only wide opener on a holiday weekend.

Re: Friday numbers (MCN and ERC)
Can someone explain how Couples Retreat gets a 12.3m first day and Surrogates flops? I haven't seen either but Surrogates looks like a movie which would do well but it failed even with the supposed backing and budget behind it. This movie looks completely devoid of emotion for a comedy without any hype at all and its shot so high? What in the world, 30million? Of course PA is out of this world, but people expected out of this world.

Re: Friday numbers (MCN and ERC)
Couples Retreat was also one of the first (if not first) big movies in awhile to really appeal to married couples, in a different way than a romantic comedy.

Re: Friday numbers (MCN and ERC)
How on earth is ERC predicting 5.5M after a 2.54M friday for PA. Are they expecting a 30% drop today?
Will sunday drop be ameliorated bcos of Columbus day.

Re: Friday numbers (MCN and ERC)
Even with that opening I'm not sure it'll make $100 million. WoM seems mediocre at best. However, there's not much direct competition ahead...

Re: Friday numbers (MCN and ERC)
October looks like another solid month BO wise. 10 Billion looks highly probable at this point.

Re: Friday numbers (MCN and ERC)
Yeah, PA should make more this weekend than they're estimating. I could see 6 Million. I don't expect a drop on Saturday. If there was one it wouldn't be too big, IMO.

Re: Friday numbers (MCN and ERC)
Couples Retreat is a major surprise, especially as the terrible reviews came in and the buzz was, like, non-existant. I know a lot of people who do wanna see it but to make $35m this weekend is really surprising.
Paranormal Activity is also absurd, though.
And Cloudy and Zombieland holds are great.

Re: Friday numbers (MCN and ERC)
I think the cast, mainly Vaughn, helped to sell this movie. It could make a 100 million but if it does it will because it has no direct competition.

Re: Friday numbers (MCN and ERC)
Yeah, huge for Couples Retreat....it has a couple of likeable stars, the first high profile comedy in a while (i think) and it had the whole weekend on it's own.

great weekend. Hopefully a wide-PA and Wild Things will make next weekend even better.

Re: Friday numbers (MCN and ERC)
Absolutely great weekend all-around!
Couples Retreat is the fifth film for Vince Vaugn to open to $30+ million with him in the lead (after Dodgeball, Wedding Crashers, The Break-Up and Four Cgristmases). Clearly this guy has his following and is likeable enough. However, it wasn't just him, I think the ensemble cast itself helped a lot. Anyway, $100 million is quite possible, but given the WoM definitely nowhere near guaranteed.
Zombieland managed a fine hold. I expect it to drop elss than 40% over the weekend actually. However, it should take a hit next weekend with three wide openers and Paranormal Activity going wide, so I still don't quite see $100 million, but $85-90 million should happen.
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs' hold is simply AMAZING. I mean just 15% down from last Friday and this is a holiday weekend...WOW! Could make up to $14 million this weekend. With Wild Thinmgs and the loss of IMAX theatres, I expect it to drop 45+% next weekend, but still...$125+ million is in for it.
Terrific for Paranormal Activity. Not much else can be said. I don't see anything less than $7 million for the weekend. It's actually not just this year's The Blair Witch Projectm ut thanks to probably better WoM and the Halloween-proximity-release probably this year's The Ring. Should become the first horror movie since The Grudge to make $100+ million.
Surrogates is doing quite meh numbers domestically, but at least the legs seem decent and it should make it to $45 million or so. Overseas it is mostly a smash, though, so I wouldn't rule out $180-200 million worldwide.
And, wow, Michael Moore flicks really are getting frontloaded, eh?

Re: Friday numbers (MCN and ERC)
This is going to be a really impressive weekend for October considering how empty it looked.
Couples Retreat blew past all expectations and will end up with one of the biggest October openings on record. A solid hold for Zombieland considering its nature, and it will still likely end up at with at least $80M domestic. Stunning hold for Cloudy, again. And Paranormal Activity is just utterly insane.

Re: Friday numbers (MCN and ERC)
I'm surprised about Couples Retreat, it looked so bad in the ads. Like a warmed over tv movie from 1995.

Dr. Lecter wrote: To me $12.3 million for Couples Retreat is even a bigger WTF? this weekend than Paranormal Activity. Seriously....why?! Because people again love dumb been there type of comedies, probably as an escape from everyday life for 80 or 90 minutes.. I agree with ya.. I don't get the success of this movie either..
