Re: Martyrs
Now I'm normally immune to the worst horror can offer me, I mean I consider "Inside" one of the best films of 2008 and that featured a c-section with a scissors, but this film..............holy mother of Christ. First half brutal stuff with children being shotgunned to death and the self mutilation due to insanity however it was decent hardcore French horror fare. But then the last 35 minutes just turned this into a snuff film. You get to see a woman getting the shit kicked into her and completed skinned for some utterly bizarre reason to do with being able to see the afterlife.
Time to engage mind wipe.

Re: Martyrs
I'm sure the ending would be interesting if it wasn't preceded by so much depravity and sheer brutality. It's basically unwatchable for the last third. I read some comment that called it "existential torture porn", but there's nothing pornographic about it. Whereas Inside used its gore for artistic and aesthetic purposes, this has no such higher ambitions. It's just disgusting for the sake of being disgusting.
On top of that, it's also nearly incomprehensible, totally artless, and blatantly atonal. There's no coherence or point to the movie. It exists merely to disturb as much as possible, with no larger meaning. The tacked-on "twist", while admittedly thought-provoking, is so totally at-odds with what comes before it that it feels contrived and fake. It's intriguing, but not enough to totally alter the entire film.
So yeah, it sucks. Sorry Lecter.

Re: Martyrs
Heh, I don't take this personally. I can easily see how one can hate this film. At first I couldn't assign it any kind of a grade, anyway, not certain what I actually witnessed. I am still not. But I came to the conclusion that I liked it a lot.
It's not even about the twist at the end (which is thought-provoking, but certainly there's too little of it to be the main focus). It is about the way of storytelling in this film which is unlike most films I have seen in my life. You never know where the film is heading. There's no plot thread here. It's uncompromising, brutal and very "random". I enjoyed that.
One thing I'd disagree with it is disgusting for the sake of being disgusting. It doesn't feel like Saw V or some other knock-off which are violent for the sake of being violent. I really doubt that was the purpose here.
But it is very much a love/hate film. I'd really like to read makeshift's thoughts on it.
And I still need to see Inside...it is sitting on my shelf ever since the blind buy almost a year ago...

Re: Martyrs
I just thought it was a pile of bollocks.
Didn't know what it was before my mate put it on. I got very bored very quickly after the initial shotgun attack but persevered, often believing I was nearing the end of the film... Then out of nowhere the film completely changes tack and my mate tells me that according to some reviews the last half hour's the worst thing we'll ever see.
Well it wasn't. It was a woman getting punched and fed gruel repeatedly for twenty minutes. And then we see some scissors and her face contorting as something happens off camera. And then she has no skin. And then she whispers something to an old woman, not that I gave a shit what she was saying. Then the old woman kills herself for some reason.
And then I'd lost two hours.

Yikes, I was really looking forward to this, but it sounds kind of bad from what everyone here is saying. That's disappointing. I was hoping it would be the next great horror flick. Maybe I won't be blind buying this.

Re: Martyrs
MARTYRS - 7/10 ( B )This was violent as fuck. I thought the first hour was quite good, but wasn't as pleased with the last 35 minutes. I'd still recommend giving it a watch for those who can handle this sort of brutal horror. It may sound bad, but I personally didn't find it hard to watch. I've just become really immune to violence in horror movies I guess. The most disturbing part for me was the two kids getting shot. I was hoping they wouldn't, but wasn't surprised they did. I felt bad for them, but also must wonder if they had any idea of what their parents were up to. Their secret didn't seem that hidden to me. Maybe they knew all about it. If so, then I don't care that they were killed.Anyway, it's not nearly as great as INSIDE. But it may just be a bit more violent. I'm really not sure. It's at least as violent. Lecter, you NEED, NEED to watch INSIDE NOW!

Re: Martyrs
One of the worst movies I've ever seen. I fast forwarded most of the last third because it was unwatchable, completely senseless. The 'twist' was a joke that doesn't even come close to justify 99% of what happened in this movie. F

Re: Martyrs
I'd say 3/5.
I was shocked at the start. It was hard to watch certain scenes. The girl running screaming at the start disturbed me. I got bored towards the end. The end freaked me out. The pictures in the gallery freaked me out.
But 2 of my friends hyped it up so much that i was kinda let down
