Quote:
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is a 2009 science fiction-action film based on the G.I. Joe toy franchise, with particular inspiration from the comic book and cartoon series G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero. The film is directed by Stephen Sommers, produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and co-written by Stuart Beattie, based on a 1998 screenplay by John Paul Kay. G.I. Joe features an ensemble cast based on the various characters of the franchise. The story follows two American soldiers, Duke and Ripcord, who join the G.I. Joe Team after being attacked by MARS troops.

After leaked drafts of the script were criticized by fans, Larry Hama, writer of the comic, was hired as creative consultant and rewrites were made. Filming took place in Downey, California and Prague's Barrandov Studios, and six companies handled the visual effects. The film was released on August 7, 2009, worldwide, following an extensive marketing campaign focused on the Mid-American public. Rise of Cobra opened at the top of the box office and grossed over $302 million worldwide by the end of its run. Critical reception was mostly negative, with criticism to the writing and acting. A sequel is being planned for a possible 2012 release.

B for Bad in a good way. Ridiculous, but action packed with some fun sci fi ideas. The ideal film for the 9 year old mind.

One of the most absurd action films I've seen, but unlike say a Transformers 2 it actually embraces the absurd. At no point whatsoever does the film take itself seriously. If it did the film would've immediately lost it's charm. Still, I didn't quite like it enough. I had enough fun, but I wouldn't exactly recommend rushing out to see it.

It starts off slow and finishes the same way. If you take the section where Tatum and Wayans go through training up until the first 15 minutes of finale you've got yourself a very good action film (the sequence in Paris is actually somewhat impressive). I also liked the cameos. We were a Weisz and a Hannah away from a Mummy reunion. And there was one person in this who I didn't expect to see at all. It was kind of enjoyable to see
Spoiler: show
Joseph Gordon Levitt
in this sort of movie. Everything else? Eh, not so much. It's not a good thing when the beginning and the ending looks like a mix of live action and cartoon. The middle part though is damn good.

I almost liked it. It's stupid, but appropriately tongue-in-cheek and funny. Unfortunately, it's way too long and the climax is a letdown.

It's obscenely better than Transformers 2, though! You can kinda tell what's happening in the action scenes. And that's always nice.

Okay, here's the thing: this film is perfect. It lacks flaws

...no seriously though, it's hilariously cheesy, but knowingly. It's absolutely bananas, but thanks to a not-too-long running time (unlike most of the films this summer) and AWESOME action scenes, it worked. It had a hilarious bad guy (and yes, I am talking about you know who - I didn't even know he was in this 'till tonight). It contained hilarious dialogue (ex. "When our master died, you took a vow of silence. Now you will die without a word." - White Ninja Guy). The acting was generally terrible, but who cares? And Sienna Miller was an absolute fox.

So yes, it is a perfect summer film.

I feel like one person who can really appreciate the awesomeness of G.I. Joe is bABA. Come back!

Sienna Miller/Rachel Nichols tits > Megan Fox tits. BUT, Transformers 2's amazingness rapes this film even with the Paris action included.

This is what Transformers 2 should of been. It is in no way a perfect film but provides that certain amount of enjoyment needed in a summer blockbuster. The story is a strong one and the cast is enjoyable (including a suprise entrance from Joseph Gordon-Levitt). While it was very obvious where CGI was used, the action was great and just made the ride a whole lot of fun. A nice suprise. B-

Is that a rhetorical question?

I kinda loved it. Sure, many of the special effects are goofy, but there's at least one in seemingly every frame. Where The Dark Knight pretends that it exists in a realistic world, GI Joe confidently throws that notion to the wayside. As a result, GI Joe is kind of like a less articulate Speed Racer, only with four times as many explosions. I found this sugar bomb to be delicious gluttony; the more cynical types, or the hypocrites who demand their summer blockbusters are gritty and vaguely realistic, will roll their eyes in disgust.

Cool and Go Speed Racer Go. That was a fun movie to just sit back and laugh at.

speaking of Speed Racer, in a roundtable including David Poland, Devin Faraci, and Anne Thompson, they talk about GI Joe parallels (around the 2 minute mark).

Its goofy as all hell but in the end thats what makes it work. The moment I saw the underground Joe base with shit going on in the background that reminded me of that scene in Waynes World where Wayne has a room full of ninja's training because it would be cool......................well thats when I just relaxed and let the silliness wash over me.

Its tongue in cheek and full of characters that scream this is a fantasy world you are watching, and since the whole thing is deliberate on the part of Sommers I can't really mark it down as a minus in any major way.

If you put a gun to my head and demanded bad areas well all the emotional flashback nonsense is to earnest for this type of film, and the CGI in the Paris action sequence had me laughing my head off (although to be fair making people look like they are running as fast a cheetah's without it causing hilarity is something that has yet to be mastered) but hey considering I expected a Stealth level of bad its nice to be pleasantly surprised overall.

If you have to see a piece of slavering weapons and war porn this is a pretty good place to start.

Post Re: G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra
What a great way to wrap the summer up of disappointments. I loved 90% of what I saw, great action, gadgets, fights, and hot babes. As a kid I was a die hard G.I. Joe fan and have watched every episode of the seasons from the 80's as well as the Movie that was pulled from a wide release due to Transformers absolute failure that same year. If I had a gripe it would be how Cobra Commander's and the Baronesses back story and creation. Also why were the Joe vehicles so none detailed? Other than that I loved it. I was one of the one's worried by the trailer with the "Suits" but the scenes they are in are great and they didn't overuse them. Loved how they imagined the energy weapons from the cartoon, although they were never that powerful. Some have said they didn't like the Cobra Commanders mask, but it actually looks a little like the last one he had before the oringinal series was canceled. All in all if you want to be entertained G.I. Joe is not a bad way to spend a couple of hours rooting for the good guys.
