Loyal - A+ Chip - A+ Thompsoncory - (I thought it was phenomenal. Definitely one of the best of the year.) Public Enemy #1 - (my favorite of the year so far.) Libs - A Bradley - (it is exhilirating!)
So that's 6 A's. Who's the C?

 Re: (500) Days of Summer
I Joseph Gorden-Levitt. Not only is he dreamy, he's such a talented actor. He nails this performance. And Zooey is just great as well. I loved that the usual roles are swapped in that Tom is the hopeless romantic in this and not the girl. It just seemed so fresh to me. The best parts were all of the artsy aspects that have been mentioned already. The split screen scene was heartbreaking. But I found the scene where the background turns into a sketch and then fades away really creative and touching. I also thought we were in for a more cheesy love story and found myself a bit shocked at how everything played out. Really sad but the humor in and the humanity of the story made it all just great. I definitely hope a lot of people get to see this. A

I liked it too!
It's really great. Often hilarious (Levitt's musical number, "Roses are red, violets are blue, fuck you whore", "If someone gave me this card, I'd eat it", "You know exactly what I want", etc.), really sweet, and best of all, not cliched and predictable. It's a ballsy romcom.
100% perfect chemistry helps, and Zooey Deschanel is too cute.

Probably the best scene in any film this year. It pretty much nails everything.

 Re: (500) Days of Summer
Magnus' review is dead on.
I didn't expect a lot going into this film, I know I wanted to see it because it was getting rave reviews and I like films like this that play with the genre. The two leads are incredible, of course, and the supporting cast is fine. But where 500 days shines is the reality its main character, Tom, is based in. The first 20 minutes of the film were uncannily similar to my life. The way he reacts to her, if she likes him or not, his friends calling her a lesbian, me and my friend were like "WTF, that's you". Every reaction, action and consequence set in this film was so relatable and that is what I loved about it. The soundtrack is amazing, though I would love for once that the characters of smaller films could have the same taste in music without it being some alternative band. Why does it have to be The Smiths, or like, Gaslight Anthem or something. For once could a character be playing Jay-Z and have the love interest enjoy it just the same? Of course it works very well in this film and it fits the tone and the characters, but thats just my pet peeve. That said, The Smiths are awesome. The film exposes the truth about relationships and how men and women handle everything differently and we process everything down to the expression on their face and what could it mean. There are so many already classic moments in the film, but the standout is of course the dance sequence which was just so awesome. I loved it, so much. I have so much to say for this film but I don't really want to spoil it by just spewing out words. This is a film to be seen, not because it's ground breaking, but because it's very charming, very sweet and very honest. Summer is a really moving experience, and the ending is very true to life and all of it's questionable moments. A-. Loved it.

You and your friends call girls who don't like you lesbians? Thank God the soundtrack doesn't include Jay-Z and other such music or I wouldn't want to see it . That's what the " FAST & THE FURIOUS" movies are for... How about if the main character liked Garth Brooks? Wouldn't that be odd .

I'm not saying it has to be Jay-Z, but mainstream music is also good, but I agree I guess that what blockbusters are for. It twists the genre on its head, sure, but there have been movies before this (The Break-Up) where the ending was not what was expected, and was not a typical romantic movie.

 Re: (500) Days of Summer
I have to see it again. For some reason it didn't click with me until just now that the story is about Tom and we're supposed to see everything through his eyes (I hate that cliche but it's late so give me a break). I was watching this with the mindset of a slightly offbeat romantic-ish comedy. Here's two people, their motivations, their fears, enjoy the film. Kind of like how you'd watch Away We Go/ And that's sort of how the film is setup at first by splitting the two kids into a split screen. But that's not how we're supposed to watch it. We're supposed to be Tom (or his invisible friend since the film isn't shot like a first person video game - except for two scenes where Tom is recalling Summer's features while she's lying on a bed, another clue I should've picked up on). I was wondering why I hated Summer so much when she appeared behind Tom on the park bench. Gee, I wonder why? We've all been there in one form or another. We've all felt betrayed for reasons we don't quite seem to understand until after the fact (sometimes never). We're experiencing it again with Tom. And to answer Magnus' question as to whether or not the film is good - fuck yes it is. That's why. As Loyal said, Quote: Great films not only entertain or enlighten, but they get you thinking about your own life. And as an added bonus, this film manages to show a part of our life we've all gone through. It's almost not a film, but an experience. Oh, it also reminded me quite a bit of How I Met Your Mother and that's a plus. Both are about two guys who love women who can't quite love them back. Both are architects. Both the show and this film are heavy believers in fate. Now throw in bits like the opening "author's note", and the Hall & Oates dance number and you've got the icing on the cake. For about ten hours today I thought this was a very good movie. Now I realize it's something a little more special. ****

 Re: (500) Days of Summer
This is an easy A.
What a wonderful, beautiful movie this was. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel were both excellent, especially the former (he should be in more great things). At first when I heard about/saw the trailer I was worried this would be another Juno-esque experience with that--at times--overwhelming level of quirk/indie but I didn't see any of that here. This was different, yeah, but not the kind of different-for-the-sake-of-being-different that so many independant films drown in.
There was nothing I did not love/like about this movie, with my favorite (or one of, anyway) bit being the expectations/reality segment. I couldn't believe how perfect that whole sequence was. I know I've gone into situations in the same way, with "realistic" thoughts on how things could play out only to get a kick in the face. That was quite effective. The jumping around never felt forced, the narrator was used in exactly the right way (and generally speaking, I loathe narrators. Lots.), the supporting cast was all solid, and really everything else about the movie=awesome.
I'm definitely seeing this again.

 Re: (500) Days of Summer
Just as great the second time around.
I love how the film opens on the last time we'll ever see Tom and Summer together. Though we dont know it yet because they're holding hands on a bench and she's wearing a wedding ring.
I've also been toying with the idea that Tom's little sister is a figment of his imagination. I need more time.
A+

 Re: (500) Days of Summer
So I'm a bit disappointed in this movie. I even tried to keep my expectations low, because the trailer had blown me away, but alas I left the theater saying to myself, "meh". The "he said" of the he said / she said review over at box office prophets basically stated everything I found wrong with the film albeit to a more exaggerated idea. The whole thing felt a mix of being contrived yet trying to show that it was indeed different leading to a convulted mess with characters I wanted to like but didn't.
I think I may need to view it agian, but my initial rating is a B-/B.
Having just seen Funny People days earlier, although I went into that with much lower expectations, but left pleasantly surprised giving it a B/B+.
It could all be psychological...

Quote: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2009/07/16/movies/20090716-500days-feature.html I hope that's a dream or daydream sequence and not supposed to have really happened. And even if not real it's about on the level of something from Scrubs, definitely not what I expected from all the raves. I'll still see it but kind of wary now.
