Re: Japan Box Office (09) July
Big-screen TV adaptation Gokusen: The Movie earned $5.27m (Y489.5m) from 402,440 admissions on its opening weekend in Japan, beating out Hollywood newcomers Knowing and Monsters Vs. Aliens.
Distributor Toho opened the film on 409 screens for strong per screen averages of $12,900. Toho predicts a final take of $43m.
Gokusen stars Yukie Nakama as the granddaughter of a yakuza boss who fulfills her dream of being a teacher at an all-male high school, handling a class of delinquents.
Based on a manga by Kozueko Morimoto, Gokusen spawned a successful Nippon Television Network series also starring Nakama, with seasons aired in 2002, 2005 and last year.
NTV also produced an animated version in 2004. The film features cast members from recent and past seasons and marks the final time the actress will play the red track-suited icon.
Animated hit Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance moved into second after two weeks in first place, earning over $16m thus far.
Toho-Towa distributed Knowing, which opened in third place, while Paramount’s Monsters Vs. Aliens opened in seventh place. The film’s 135-screen opening is the widest ever 3D release in the territory. Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen fell from third to fifth.
Big screen “blow ups” of hit TV shows continue to help broadcasters shore up rapidly decreasing ad revenues, which have plummeted five years in a row, dropping 4.4% in 2008.
Toho released another TV adaptation, TBS’ Rookies, on 428 screens in late May grabbing $13m on its first two days. Still ranking fourth, it is currently the highest grossing film of 2009 amassing $80m so far.
Despite such adaptations being a fixture at the top end of year-end box office rankings they rarely generate major sales or box office overseas.

Re: Japan Box Office (09) July
Rookies is slowing down just a tad. Not sure if it can reach 100m. Summer will help, and 90m is a lock most likely, but I *think* it'll need a push eventually or some sub 20% drops for several weeks to reach the 100m mark, which will be a huge success for it and the Box Office in Japan. Excluding Miyazaki films (Howl's Moving Castle - 190m, Ponyo - 170m), the last film to cross 100m was Harry Potter 3 5 years ago.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/too ... /Japan.jspRookies hits 82m Evangelion has a shot at 40m perhaps if it keeps holding well. Monsters Vs Aliens disappoints Transformers might get lucky and reach 30m.

I wonder why the 2nd Rebuild of Evangelion movie is doing so much better than the 1st? It was pretty much a well-known commodity already. Is it all to do with release date?

Re: Japan Box Office (09) July
No idea, and it's only playing in 129 theatres, less than half the average. The equivalent here would probably be around 1800-2000 or so. 3rd weekend and a PTA of 24K...

Re: Japan Box Office (09) July
Wouldn't potter affect all holdovers especially TF2/T4. I dont see how TF2 can make 30M from a 1.5M weekend and < 21M total.

Re: Japan Box Office (09) July
TF2 made a little over 5m it's opening weekend. Legs in Japan are huge compared to, say, the US. A 5m opening, 30m total for instance is rather meh.
Not sure about Potter, I doubt i'll hurt holdovers too much since it's fanbase driven.

Re: Japan Box Office (09) July
http://www.cinemanavi.co.jp/english/weekend.htmlJust the rankings, but the holdovers look like they tumbled. I wasn't aware Pokemon the 12th Movie was opening this past weekend. Last year, Pokemon the 11th Movie opened against Ponyo (no idea why it opened against what was going to be an easy 100m+ film. Ponyo went on to gross 170m from a 13m opening) and actually became the biggest Pokemon movie ever in Japan, grossing I believe 53m after a 9m opening. Now the 12th movie, opening against a candidate for biggest movie of the year again, Harry Potter 6, debuts at No.2 just like the 11th did against Ponyo. I doubt it matters what a Pokemon film opens against though given the massive fanbase. It'll be intereting to see this weekends numbers for sure though. Harry Potter 6 broke the wed record with 3.6m, and was projected to gross 27m for the 5-day for a new record, so we'll see soon enough. Previous films in the respected franchises numbers: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - 18.7m / 80m (biggest opening for the franchise, but lowest total.) Pokemon the 11th Movie - 9m/53m (not sure where the opening ranks, but it's the biggest total for the franchise.)

Re: Japan Box Office (09) July - Potter and Pokemon
Also, if HP6 did indeed open to the projected 27m I read, nearly 10m more than HP5, it would be the biggest opening ever, and give it a real shot at 100m.
Two potential 100m films this year, the other being Rookies if it can pull off some strong holds the remainder of the summer, would be a great success for the Box Office there. 2009 seemed like it was going to be lacking with nothing coming close to the success of Ponyo, first 100m+ film in 4 years there, and while no film will come close to Ponyo, two 100m, even if Rookies and Potter crawl to the mark, will keep the box office on par with 2008, if not higher even with Red Cliff II beating Red Cliff I earlier this year and another Pokemon film which could be good for 50+.

HR has the latest weekend chart. HP6 made 18.156 over 5-day. Also TF2 tumbled hard. Does this imply just a 25M gross in japan. Re: Japan Box Office (09) July - Potter and Pokemon
Variety report wasn't using appropriate sources with their projected 27m 5-day for Potter (though that was released on WED), or it was super frontloaded.
Not a bad opening obviously, it would be the 2nd best in the francise, and 4th biggest of all time in Japan (5-day), though 100m is highly unlikely, as is probably HP5's 80m total. Gotta wait and see, though I doubt the continued downward trend for the franchise is going to stop here.
Good opening for Pokemon the 12th Movie also. A little lower than the previous movie, though the previous ended up being the biggest movie in the franchise. 40m shouldn't be too difficult for this one.
And yeah, Transformers 2 (won't be reaching 30m), as well as the other hold overs took some big hits with the three big openers. 100m is also highly unlikely not for Rookies now, though 90m will happen, so it and Potter combined should match Ponyo from last year at least.

Re: Japan Box Office (09) July - Potter and Pokemon
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/too ... /Japan.jspWith just one opener that appeared in the Top 10, that film being Ice Age 3 debuting at No.10 (hehe), the drops weren't that great for anything. Potter at 37m after 12 days, with what appears to be a decent hold, but I'm not sure how the last Potter film held. Pokemon keeps a PTA over 10k it's second weekend, but seeing a meh drop (gotta check the last films 2nd weekend drop to see how it compares), and Rookies crossed 85m.

HP6 crossed 50m after 3 weeks making it the third biggest film of the year so far. HP5 finished with 80m, so that's the obvious target. PKMN12 near 30m, still looks good for 40m+. Bolt has a solid debut at No.4. Rookies falls out of the top 10 unfortunately thanks to 4 new openers, so tracking it's gonna be tough now.

Not too good for Potter 6. It only added 8/9m over the week, and unless it can have some strong holds in the weeks to come, it doesn't look like it'll reach Potter 5's 80m total. Which would continue the downward spiral for Potter in Japan, every single film since the first has decreased from the previous film. My guess for Potter 6 would be low 70's.
Pretty good for Pokemon the 12th Movie, adding 7/8m over the week, quickly catching up to Potter despite opening quite a bit lower the same weekend. 40m is a lock, should finish in the mid 40's, very good.
Not too bad for GI Joe. Could have been worse.
And there is an interesting battle for Hollywood's 2nd biggest film of the year (1st being Potter) between Angels & Demons and Terminator 4 playing out:
- 15 Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins Sony $14,461 -92.8% 17 -288 $851 $33,822,123 9 USA - - Angels & Demons Sony $147 -98.4% 3 -5 $49 $34,228,304 13 USA
Angels & Demons is basically finished with just 3 theatres remaining, and Terminator 4 took a huge hit dropping 93% this weekend, but 400,000 is still very close and it can only gain on it now.
Rookies keeps chugging along, dropping 50% though this past weekend, I still think it can crawl to 90m. 13 11 Rookies: Sotsugyô Toho $244,350 -50.1% 336 - $727 $87,151,336 11

With Summer coming to a close, let's compare Summer 08 to Summer 09.
Top 5 Films: Summer 2008
1. Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea - 165m 2. Boys Over Flowers - 75m 3. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - 53m 4. Pokemon the 11th Movie - 44m 5. Aibo - 42m
Top 5 Films: Summer 2009 (my projections)
1. Rookies - 90m 2. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - 76m 3. Pokemon the 12th Movie - 45m 4. Evangelion: 2.0 - 37m 5. Angels & Demons, Gokusen, Amalufi (34+) --The 5th spot is too hard to predict since Angels & Demons currently would claim it (with 34m), but Gokusen and Amalufi are both heading to a total in the mid 30's.
Evangelion is VERY impressive. It was only released in 200 theatres (less than half a normal local blockbuster) or something and has pulled in some huge numbers.

What's wrong with movies in Japan? I remember they used to have so many many more $100+ million grossers...

But local films keep doing more and more (on average), so that's good. shawman, the list is for summer films only, May-Aug, so no Wall-E. Wall-E opened in Dec. in Japan.

Well what about something like Bayside Shakedown 2 which made $150+ million as well?

Spirited Away $234,000,000 Titanic $219,500,000 Hauru No Ugoku Shiro (Howl’s Moving Castle) - $188m Harry Potter 1: PS - $170,100,000 Ponyo On The Cliff By The Sea (2008) - $164,565,997 Bayside Shakedown 2 $164.45m Harry Potter 2: COS - $164m Princess Mononoke $156,000,000 E.T. $145,000,000 Armageddon $140,000,000 The Last Samurai – $133,000,000 Harry Potter 3: POA - $131m Jurassic Park 1 - $125,500,000 The Phantom Menace - $109,905,784 Finding Nemo - $106.8m Matrix Reloaded $104.3m Lord Of The Rings: ROTK - $100.2m
All Hollywood except for the Miyazaki films and Bayside Shakedown 2. So Bayside Shakedown 2 is the only local film, except for Miyazaki, that has grossed over 100m.
I'm guessing Bayside Shakedown was at it's peak in popularity in Japan when the second movie opened. TV show adaptations do very well in Japan too, Rookies and Boys Over Flowers being the most recent examples.
