You know, my first thought when the Richard Bey scene started was that this was probably just going to be simple, rather meaningless race-baiting. But that all changed when they started booing him the moment he said he was a gay man, and long before he said all the crazy shit. Bruno would have been depressing if it weren't so murderously funny.

 Re: Brüno
I fail to see how the stage parent bit is any more in-depth than the Bey business. Neither one is a doctoral thesis. I just find it hard not to be taken aback by the sight (obvious or not...and there's little more obvious than the degenerate nature of stage parents) of a group of people suddenly turning on and booing a man they'd been cheering on moments earlier because of the revelation of his favored sexual partner.
No, it's not surprising, but it's horrifying and frustrating and funny all the same. Fuck, nothing in the movie is surprising. We know where these bits are going the moment they start. As we did in the not-so-funny Borat.

Hmm. I didn't like the talk show bit and I like it less the more I think about it.
Homophobia in the black community is more present but it is also somewhat misunderstood. And while I can appreciate the desire to "satirize" it, if as the studio said in a statement (that they wanted to "highlight people's homophobia" etc making it sound like this is a good-works film), then it will do more harm than good.

The stage parents part seemed staged to be honest. I mean it was simply too out there and too shocking to believe...

 Re: Brüno
Max-Out had me in tears. Harrison Ford and the talking penis in rapid succession - funny! And while there are definitely moments that rivaled Borat, I agree that the movie was much shaggier. Of course Borat wasn't filmed chronologically, but we did have the tried-and-true road trip plot to make it feel like a real movie. Here, there was just so little to connect the individual sketches. Maybe I'm just spoiled from the wonderful comedies this decade has produced, but some semblance of a plot would have been nice.
That said, I just got done having a heated argument with my sister, whose dislike for the film seemed to grow by the second once we left the theater. She felt like it just confirmed gay stereotypes; that where Borat's humor often came from people's reactions, here too much humor was just how ridiculous Bruno was. And while I gamely argued that it wasn't as morally reprehensible as she thought, and that the joke was also on the audience, I couldn't help thinking that maybe she had a point. I do think she was letting political correctness get the better of her, but I don't think Bruno holds a candle to Borat. Telling people who disliked it that the joke was supposed to be on them is a bit of a cheat.

 Re: Brüno
Certainly disappointing. Not nearly as funny as BORAT. I was disappointed how few and far the laughs were. I watched BORAT for the fourth time the other day and found it funnier the fourth time around than this was the first time. That movie was shocking and hilarious. BRUNO ups the shock factor, but there are fewer laughs to be had. It has its moments, but after BORAT I was expecting much more. I'll give Sacha Baron Cohen credit though - he's got huge balls. I cannot believe some of the antics he pulls. But they just aren't THAT funny. There are just so many misses in this movie.
Anyway, maybe I'd have enjoyed it more with a packed audience (there were only two other people there when I saw it), or maybe I'd have been more uncomfortable. The people who were there kept making disgusted comments before finally getting up and leaving. And a lot of people are going to HATE this movie. It's so incredibly out there I can't describe it. I couldn't believe my eyes. Even people incredibly comfortable with homosexuality are bound to be disgusted.
Are audiences ready for Bruno? To be honest, I don't think they ever will be.

 Re: Brüno
This was pretty much on target with what I expected.
Sacha Baron Cohen is a brave man. And we're lucky to have him. I'm personally glad, as a gay man first and also as a lover of freedom and equality in general, to see a man like him that doesn't shy from everything that's politically correct and never pulls back from this form of reaction humor. This can be called a movie about the sickness of humanity, period. And the homophobia from people - gay and straight.
And yes, this is one of those cases when "beating people with a hammer" is the only solution to get the point across. (showing how stupid are our pre-conceptions. )

 Re: Brüno
Here's a list, just for you dear and curious Katie. Off the top of my head:
1. The guys at the camp 2. Guys in the military 3. The gay converter + the other man from the 2nd fase of conversion (LOL) 4. The karate trainer 5. The swingers party 6. The guys at the anti-gay march and the policeman, and the rest of that crew. 7. Ron Paul 8. Everything happening Middle East, bordered on homophobia as much as other kinds of phobia. 9. Talent agent 10. The talk show audience 11. Brüno himself as a caricature is a huge stab at out pre-conceived notions about gay people, hello? Shall I go on?
I'd ask the same question as yoshue. Did you see the same film as we did?
And I'll ask another question too: Where were these haters of Brüno's behaviour when Borat came by with his "strange" habits? Like trading his pubic hair, admitting being proud of her sister, the biggest whore in the country, and so on? Yes, Brüno is a lot less nicer than Borat - but that's really the whole point.
Oh gawd, we really have a long way to go here.

 Re: Brüno
android wrote: Here's a list, just for you dear and curious Katie. Off the top of my head:
1. The guys at the camp -- um, if some guy came in to my tent butt naked and was like "can I come sleep with you" I would have been like "GTFO" too. I guess there was a little but it was more just gross out humor.
2. Guys in the military -- he was being retarded. It isn't homophobia to make every person keep the same dress code.
3. The gay converter + the other man from the 2nd phase of conversion (LOL) -- ok you have a point. However, to me, I was a little annoyed at this. The "anti-gay"/fundies people are sort of the "cool" people to make fun of now. It is getting old. Religulous, Jesus Camp, God Who Wasn't There, etc. So to me I hated this whole scene.
4. The karate trainer -- homophobic? Really? Uh, again, if I was in a karate class and someone was asking how to defend against flying dildoes, I'd be pretty annoyed.
5. The swingers party -- It was a swingers party, not a gay party. I mean, there were some elements but the majority of it I kind of thought it was more just him being again, annoying.
6. The guys at the anti-gay march and the policeman, and the rest of that crew. -- See above comment about the anti-gays
7. Ron Paul -- Uh, if I was going to a professional interview and someone started stripping, I'd be pissed off as well. Now the usage of the word "queer" etc wasn't right so okay there was a little bit there.
8. Everything happening Middle East, bordered on homophobia as much as other kinds of phobia.
9. Talent agent -- Eh. Again, he's talking on the phone in a professional setting about "putting your finger in my asshole", I would have hung up on him.
10. The talk show audience -- Yes, I thought I did agree there was some there
11. Brüno himself as a caricature is a huge stab at out pre-conceived notions about gay people, hello? -- He is a stab of some of the charicatures, but he wasn't able to make it "funny" in my opinion.
Shall I go on?

Oh gawd, we really have a long way to go here. Evidently! I'm completely on Katie's side here. I can count on one hand the number of times Bruno legitimately showed up homophobia from its subjects. For the most part it merely reinforced unpleasant gay stereotypes in a desperate attempt to grab laughs. I hate this film the more i think about it.

 Re: Brüno
Hilarious first half; funny second half. I can only imagine those people, whether homophobes or gay-friendly, who have never really been exposed to any gay sex watching those scenese with the bf. I was on the floor. And then the focus group had me in tears (and my surprising semi-full theater). This first half is where the guts of the movie is. It protrays an unabashed gay man, stereotypically yes, but shameless and proud - with his bf; interviewing people; etc. But then, the movie does become uneven and I blame the whole "bruno looking for fame" plot which was really dumb. The movie would have stayed at hilarious levels if Bruno had come to America with his show, gained much success, and really exploited America's bigotry the way Borat did. But as it is, it was entertaining. B+

I heard my audience laugh though.
