Boyz n the Hood
Boyz n the HoodQuote: Boyz n the Hood is a 1991 American hood film written and directed by John Singleton. Starring Cuba Gooding, Jr., Ice Cube, Laurence Fishburne, Morris Chestnut, Nia Long, Angela Bassett and Regina King, the film depicts life in poor South Central (now South) Los Angeles, California and was filmed and released in the summer of 1991. It was nominated for both Best Director and Original Screenplay during the 1991 Academy Awards, making Singleton the youngest person ever nominated for Best Director and the first African–American to be nominated for the award.
The film was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1991 Cannes Film Festival.
In 2002, the United States Library of Congress deemed the film "culturally significant" and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry.

An uncomprising, utterly powerful knockout debut film from John Singleton. A

Very gripping film, and incredible directorial debut for John Singleton. Great performances all around.

I have heard only praise for this movie. It's 'bout time that I see it as well.

I always thought it was just another black movie about "da hood" but I watched it last sunday and wow. Powerful and surprised to see Cuba Gooding Jr. do a good job acting. A

It has lost a lot of power, if you watch it today since its subject matter has been gone over and over again in countless hood movie knockoffs, but still stands up to the test of time. Great film, this movie teased us, and made us think that Ice Cube could act.

Re: Boyz N The Hood
Well-made and all, but it's just so conventional and obvious and trite.
"Those poor black youths! It's just an endless cycle of violence for them!"

Re: Boyz N The Hood
Yeah, but Singleton's film kinda started that trend so this is less conventional and obvious and trite by that virtue.
It's solid enough.

Re: Boyz N The Hood
Blaming this movie for seeming cliche is kind of like blaming Halloween for seeming old hat.
