Doesn't sound like a contender.

The opening film isn't in competition, right?
Can't wait for the reactions to Up, Parnassus and Inglourious Basterds.

I'm not sure what the rule is exactly. But I agree, it's going to be great to get early word on many of the films.

Funny People...BP Nominee?

http://hollywood-elsewhere.com/2009/04/ ... ps_his.php

Quote:
There have been a couple of recent bellwether showings of Judd Apatow 's Funny People (Universal, 7.31) in Los Angeles -- a friends-of-Apatow screening plus a research screening that happened (I'm told) about eight days ago. And the word is better than pretty good, "amazing," "James L. Brooksian," etc. The leads, of course, are Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen, with Leslie Mann, Eric Bana, Jonah Hill and Jason Schwartzman in supporting.

Possibly an award-level thing, a director friend said this morning, although he was just passing along the chatter. It's more in the realm of Sandler for Best Actor and Apatow's script for Best Original Screenplay, he speculated, than a Best Picture shot...but you never know.

So I called a non-vested guy who's seen it, and here's what he said: "Really funny, a really sweet movie, a lot of veracity...really a brilliant film. Everybody's game goes up a lot. It's a James L. Brooks-level thing and a great role for Adam. It's a perfect blend of everything Sandler has done in a serious vein. The film could be a bit of a marketing problem because it's about show business but it's so real.. It's about a famous guy, a comedian, having to deal with the fact hat he has no life and nobody to turn to. But he gets better [through a relationship with a younger comic]...it's basically a love letter to having a family."

If they wouldn't recognize the brilliance of The Truman Show or Eternal Sunshine or Man On The Man or Sandler's own Punch-Drunk Love, it'll be goddamn hard for an Actor nom and pretty much impossible for Picture. But Apatow can certainly get a Screenplay nomination (finally), and a Supporting nomination somewhere. It'll need to make more than Knocked Up, though.

The period detail looks really strong. Also, Brian Eno may have an Oscar next year.

I'm hoping to god this is deceptive marketing and not an indication of studio tampering, because the footage that is obviously not stock looks amazing.

Where's Bright Star?

It will bring Jane Campion back to the Oscars. Mark my words.

I highly doubt that. It could do well in the techs, though.

For Oscar contenders this Cannes Festival a=has been pretty underwhelming. The only film with a lot of buzz is likely to put half of the Academy membership into comas (Antichrist).

In the past it may have, but now they just don't bother to watch anything that's slightly out of the mainstream.

Up increased on Tuesday, which is crazy. If it manages $300 million somehow, can it imitate Wall-E's performance this award season?

I always saw Up as a better awards magnet than Wall-E. I think it can imitate Wall-E performance regardless of the final gross outcome.

Best Animated Film
Best Original Screenplay
Best Score
Best Sound
Best Sound Editing

Best Animated Film is pretty set, unless Princess And The Frog does miracles. It's also a strong contender to win Original Screenplay as long as all the Best Picture nominees are adapted. Score is possible, as Giacchino is rising fast, but I have a feeling Eno will take it for The Lovely Bones. It'll be nominated for both Sound awards if Ratatouille was, but it won't win either.

I think the Academy could give Pixar a legacy best picture nod sometime in the next four years. There are three occasions for that:

2010: Up: Pixar's 10th film, and a possible $300 m grosser.

2011: Toy Story 3: Pixar's return to their iconic franchise. Given that the last Toy Story film won a GG for best picture, it could happen.

2013: The Bear and the Bow: A longshot, but given that it is Pixar's first film to open in December, it would be hard to ignore if it did very well with critics and at the box office, especially at that time of year.

They don't have anything in 2012?

Bear and the Bow won't do it. Toy Story 3 won't do it.

To be quite honest. I am shocked to my core that we haven't gotten the wave of "Up is gonna get nominated for BP" threads and rants so far this year, when this would be the first time I'd actually think it could be a possibility. I have yet to see the film though. But, stellar gross, untoppable reviews, and subject matter that may be more relatable to voters ;)

The Bear and the Bow is 2012 (as are Cars 2) because it comes out in 2011. Newt is scheduled for 2012, so that one is for 2013.

If it's going to happen it's gonna happen with Up or Toy Story 3 if it delivers. The Bear and the Bow, Cars 2 and Newt aren't giving off good vibes for now IMHO.

Not Toy Story 3, no matter how good it is. Sequel.

Up is a possibility, but the reason nobody is going balls-out to predict it is because of last year. I'd keep my eye on Bear & The Bow, if any of these movies. It looks more "traditional" and easier to swallow.

I don't know why people are iffy on Newt. Don't most agree that they are best when working on the smallest character scale?
