I really want to give this piece of crap an F but I guess the fact that I did get through it makes it deserve a D.

This movie is a perfect example where nothing distracts you from the huge plot holes, horrible dialogue, and condesending message the movie has. It was almost frustrating watching this garbage.

My letter grade was F. I thought the first 15 minutes were fast and promising but it turned into nothing. The characters had no bond or chemistry, the story was predictable, the "nanos" were a disappointment and the effects, for a film of *this* scale were strange and insanely awful.

Post Re: The Day the Earth Stood Still [2008]
I'm kind of half and half on this one. I liked Jennifer Connelly. I liked the fact that all of New Jersey gets destroyed, and I liked the message when they weren't beating us over the head with it (more on that in a second).

I guess the first problem I had with the film is the lack of emotion outside of Connelly. She's the heart of the film and does this only because she's able to elevate her character into a believable/emotional human being. Everyone else in the film seems to be lacking a soul and that's kind of a problem considering what might happen to them. Why are we worth saving again? Oh yeah, because of the scene in the graveyard and the scene under the bridge. The problem is 80 minutes have passed before we get to those scenes. Although they work they kind of feel false because they come almost out of nowhere.

(I'm still trying to figure out how they were protected under the bridge though. I think were supposed to assume Klaatu was doing something, but couldn't he have protected them outside. Wouldn't just as many of those bugs attack them under the bridge since they're still out in the open. This parenthesis has gone on too long. Sorry.)

Then there's Jaden Smith. Is it unfair to pick on a child actor (he is an actor after all)? Well, I'm gonna do it anyways. He was good in The Pursuit of Happyness. Maybe it was because he was with his dad the entire time he was on screen. Here, I'm not sure if it was the way his character was written or if it was him, but he doesn't work. The only reason he's in the film is for the scene at the very end, couldn't they have at least made him somewhat likable? To his constant questioning (I know kids question things, but after the first 20 minutes you think someone would've told him to shut the fuck up) to a horrible decision no kid or adult would make if they were paying attention to what was going on around him, I just wanted him to disappear.

Oh and there's the message. It's a good one. There was no need to beat us over the head with it though. You would think after a certain point the military would realize that nothing was going to stop them. Why even bother? And the constant stubbornness and lack of communication; it kind of reminded me of Crash in all the wrong ways.

Yet I was with the movie all the way through because of Reeves and Connelly (actually I was going to give this a decent grade until I actually thought about it). Reeves isn't exactly worth talking about because he's perfectly cast. I'm not even going to bother with a joke here because everyone's already said it. Connelly though keeps things moving. She's the heart of the film and she's good.

Everything outside of the Reeves/Connelly bubble doesn't exactly work as well as it should and that's the problem with the film. It's well intentioned and it's got some decent effects work, but nothing really comes together in the end.

A dissapointment for every sci-fi/disaster fan. Also the most foolishly marketed film ever.

C/C-

Like The Invasion this movie had a lot of promise.
Unlike The Invasion it does well to live up to NONE of it.

The defender guy was scary though.
