I mean, before the reviews, just the mere concept of this film does not scream Oscar bait.

The Reader does
A Beautiful Mind does
Ray does
Memoirs of a Geisha does
Nine does

This...doesn't.

One of those movies wasn't nominated despite screaming Oscar bait.

What about the concept isn't baity? Dirty cops and mobsters trying to figure out the moles at both ends. From the guy who brought Goodfellas, a highly redarded mob movie that was nominated for BP and BD among other noms. And it was based on a wildly popular and pretty great (if not one of the greatest) Asian flick(s in recent history).

We can agree to disagree, but to me this one would've checked out as an Oscar movie. I'll say again, maybe the problem was at the time that people haven't seen the original, so maybe they weren't aware of how good the movie could turn out to be.

I suppose Donnie Brasco is Oscar bait too then?

That year you had L.A. Confidential. Granted, it's not the same type, but basically its basic outline is about the mob too.

L.A. Confidential was a period flick and a neo-noir. That helped a ton.

It did. I noted that, but still, if we're talking basic outlines, it's still about cops and mobs. Departed had other bonuses, as previously mentioned (overdue director, shitload of actor pedigree)...

Yeah, that's the key, folks. Scorsese was building on a metric fuckton of momentum.

Departed was seen as a big Oscar player until the trailer/major tv marketing came out and people began to say it was a box-office first thriller... well except like me and Maverikk.

But it was up there with Flags and Dreamgirls originally, I remember in the early blurb in the "Awards" section on the index it was like the first name listed. Uber due Scorsese + Nicholson/Leo + Mob = Oscar. And everyone could see Scorsese winning after he finally went back to his roots style instead of for bait film would make a lot of poetic sense

Tony Gilroy's other film State of Play opens in about 2 weeks. I have it listed in the poll but I've yet to really hear any buzz about it.

And me.

But it still wasn't Oscar bait.

Fuck the Golden Globes, I will watch them simply because they are the only wide broadcasted forrunners to the oscars, but they still suck.

Exactly. If they don't know how to behave, and feel OK offending others, they get their ass kicked, so they'll think next time before opening their rotten mouths.

Word from Whatever Works, which screened at ShoWest

http://filmexperience.blogspot.com/2009 ... owest.html

Quote:
Patricia Clarkson storms into the movie after approximately 40 minutes, and plays a role in many ways comparable to Penélope Cruz's tempestuous Oscar-winning Maria Elena. While I was initially skeptical of Allen's treatment of Wood as a young Lolita, Clarkson actually plays the much more sexualized character. After showing up on Boris's doorstep in a hot pink ensemble (scrunchy included!) fit for the Southern pageant circuit, she is quickly awakened to the culture of New York. Naturally, this involves sex and art. In an interesting inversion of the much discussed relationship between ScarJo, Javier Bardem, and Penélope Cruz in Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Clarkson moves in with two men without giving it a second thought. Her character transitions from praising Jesus to opening an exhibit of nude collages. Clarkson is dynamic and sexy and once again demonstrates her unbeatable range. I don't think it is any stretch to consider her worthy of this year's Oscar race.

Woody loves women and the Oscars loves them too, especially in the supporting race

Dianne Wiest - Best Supporting Actress, Hannah and Her Sisters Won
Dianne Wiest - Best Supporting Actress, Bullets Over Broadway Won
Mira Sorvino - Best Supporting Actress, Mighty Aphrodite Won
Penélope Cruz - Best Supporting Actress, Vicky Cristina Barcelona Won
Maureen Stapleton - Best Supporting Actress, Interiors Nom
Mariel Hemingway - Best Supporting Actress, Manhattan Nom
Judy Davis - Best Supporting Actress, Husbands and Wives Nom
Jennifer Tilly - Best Supporting Actress, Bullets Over Broadway Nom
Samantha Morton - Best Supporting Actress, Sweet and Lowdown Nom

Avatar won't get a BP but Camera will get a BD nod? Hmm...
Public Enemies will not be a contender come fall let alone winter
what is "An Education"?
Isn't the "untitled" Nelson Mandela project directed by Clint called The Human Factor?

The Human Factor is not the title. An Education tore up Sundance and the lead actress' work was compared to that of Page in Juno but actually great.

I seriously doubt Cameron will get a BD nom. We've been over this with TDK and KK...and a lot of us (including me) got burnt taking the bait.

Never say never. There are a billion variables in play for Cameron and his film. We won't know until we know.

Avatar is a futuristic sci-fi film, so that's dangerous, but focusing on a love story and the complications of love&war will be big oscar bait, and if his work is half as impressive as reports from early footage say, than I wouldn't be shocked at a BD nod, but I would think if Cameron gets one his film will too.
