Post Pontypool: Attack Of The Unseen Menace!!!
Pontypool demonstrates how to make an effective low budget film by featuring the low budget itself as a screenplay constraint that enhances the reality the film portrays. Instead of paying megabucks to simulate reality with expensive CGI FX, the director limits the action to a single realistic set with a realistically portrayed premise with actors realistically enacting this believable story. The viewer sees only all what the real characters in this scenario are seeing. It's been done before, sometimes with higher budgets or higher profile directors, but Pontypool remains an exemplary example of this storytelling technique.

Not only that, but the story itself is whip smart and takes some unexpected twists and turns which only amp up the intelligence. (I don't want to spoil it, and I recommend you don't either - - give the surprise to yourself as a gift. But if you don't prefer to treat yourself that way, here's the trailer to get a sense of how cool this film is, and here is the movie's tagline: >>>Shut Up Or Die<<<.)

The lead actors are tremendous and deserve kudos for their fine, fine work here (Stephen McHattie, Lisa Houle, Georgina Reilly, Rick Roberts).

But it is the director, Bruce McDonald (Roadkill, Highway 61, Hardcore Logo), who has crafted a beautiful gem of a psychological horror movie here - - it's brilliant.

  :) :towel: out of   :) :towel:

(I hope some of KJ's hardcorehorrorheads get a chance to see this one...)

Hmm, sounds interesting but very akin to The Signal, no?

I loved seeing The Signal in the theatre. Scary at times and it was funny too.

Pontypool sounds very similar, though so does Hater, The Cell, The Crazies... The only difference really is method of infection.

Fantasy Film Festival, to be exact : ) The only festival anywhere around here that#s worth to be visited. That's where I also saw the likes of Saw, The Descent, Let the Right One In, Behind the Mask etc.

Next weekend is actually a small spin-off of that festival again, I might go there if I get ahead well with my studying. They are showing this one among others:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0896534/

Was quite acclaimed on some festivals across the US.

Pontypool was surely the least zombiecentric zombie movie ever. The zombies and method of infection and all of that were secondary to the whole radio station setting and it's restrictive POV...

This was playing at the arthouse for one week, but has now been shuffled aside to make room for Adventureland (!!!), which I guess isn't content with just the multiplexes. So I guess I'll have to wait for DVD.

Multiplex audiences are the true zombie menace!

I thought it was pretty great; the critics complaining about a lack of zombie gore totally missed the point. The stylings of a zombie movie are only used as a shady outline for this cinematic diatribe on and against talk radio, controversy, and censorship. It's also probably the best-written z-movie of all time; any film that references Roland Barthes is a-ok by me.

And how about that post-credits bizarro coda? I'm not even sure where to start. Terrific.

Too bad it'll be about five years before you get around to watching it.
