Post J - Box Office (09); Dec. 26-27 - Avatar opening.
Who doesn't love international bo threads?

I'll try to keep this one updated on a weekly basis.

As for the Box Office of 2008:

According to annual data published today by The Motion Picture Producers Association of Japan (Eiren), overall box office revenues for 2008 totalled $2.164bn (Y194.84bn), a 1.8% decrease from 2007's $2.204bn (Y198.44bn)

The figure represents earnings on 160.49 million admissions, a 1.7% drop on the previous year's 163.19m cinemagoers. The average ticket price decreased slightly to $13.48 (Y1,214) from $13.51 (Y1,216) in 2007. While still the world's most expensive place to see movies, ticket presales, group discounts and special campaigns have helped nudge prices down. Some 2008 releases such as My Darling Of The Mountains simply offered a lowered ticket price.

In terms of market share, local films gained a massive 22.4% increase over 2007 results for a 59.5% portion of total earnings, reaching $1.287bn (Y115.86bn). Japanese films took back the upper hand they won in 2006, which had been the first majority for twenty-one years.

Earnings of Hollywood and other imported releases dropped 23.9% for a total of $877.17m (Y78.98bn), the lowest earnings this decade. Imports' 40.5% share marks the lowest since 1969.

Red Cliff should make the chart. It made almost $50 million in Japan last year.

I actually totally forgot about Red Cliff, it's made Y5 billion, so just over 50M.

The top 10 above is just domestic films though.

Quantum of Solace is probably headed for the 20-25M range. Casino Royale finished with 19M, so little change.
The Day The Earth Stood Still ended up being a nice little hit. Might reach 30M.

Updated the first post with the Motion Picture Producers Associations Top Films of 2008 that made at least Y1 billion ($11M) last year. So it's a Top 28 now. :D

Ponyo with Y15.5 billion ($171M) puts it in the Top 10 All Time, I'll do some digging to see if it was enough for the Top 5.

EDIT:

No Top 5 it appears, but according to this:http://www18.ocn.ne.jp/~hbr/boxoffice/top50movies_e.htm , Ponyo will rank 8th as far as YEN goes on the All Time Charts. But I think it'll be a few spots higher in $ becase I'm almost positive HP2 and Bayside Shakedown grossed around $155, so it may be ranked 6th then.

1. Spirited Away - Y30.4
2. Titanic - Y26.0
3. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - Y20.3
4. Howl's Moving Castle - Y19.6
5. Princess Mononoke - Y19.3
6. The Bayside Shakedown: Save The Rainbow Bridge! - Y17.4
7. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - Y17.3
8. Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea - Y15.5
9. Last Samurai - Y13.7
10. E.T. The Extra Terrestrial - Y13.5

Miyazaki having four of his films in the Top 10, 3 being in the top 5, is awesome. :D

And I'm not going to convert all of these, and didn't have to with the list in the first post thank god, but here are the Top Imported Films of 2008. If you wanna know that they convert to in $, just compare them to the films in the first post for rough estimates. Multipling the number by 1.1 and taking it over another decimal gives you a rough $ gross though. Example, Red Cliff made around $55.

Ranking Release Month Film Title Gross (estimated) (in billion Yen) Distributor
1 June Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull 5.71 PARAMOUNT
2 Nov. Red Cliff 5.05 TOHO-TOWA/AVEX

5 August HANCOCK 3.10 SPE
6 May The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian 3.00 Disney
7 March Enchanted 2.91 Disney
8 Dec., '07 National Treasure: Book of Secrets 2.58 Disney
9 Sep. Wanted 2.50 TOHO-TOWA
10 Jan. earth 2.40 GAGA
11 August The Mummy Tomb of the Dragon Emperor 2.20 TOHO-TOWA
12 Jan. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street 2.05 WB
13 July Kung Fu Panda 2.00 ASMIK ACE/KADOKAWA ENTERTAINMENT
14 August Sex and the City 1.80 GAGA

22 Dec., '07 Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem 1.07 FOX
23 Feb. American Gangster 1.05 TOHO-TOWA
24 April 10,000 BC 1.01 WB

*Wall-E will be included in the 2009 charts, much like I Am Legend, National Treasure, etc. were for 2008. Don't worry.

Top 10 Total - Y1,805,729,085 ($19,217,509)

Great opening for 20th Century Boys Chapter 2, biggest of 2009 so far.

20th Century Boys Chapter 1 debuted at No.2 last Augest with: $5,783,151 -- 310 -- $18,655 2 $5,783,151 and went on to become the 4th biggest film last year. So 20th Century Boys Chapter 2 maintained the PTA even with the bigger theatre count, thus seeing a nice increase over Chapter 1. Could be a Y5 billion (50M+) contender.

Mamma Mia! was overestimated a bit, but still a strong opening.
EDIT: Mamma Mia's total is 4.9M, I suppose it could have been a three day.

Wall-E keeps hangin in there, week 9 now.

The Japanese box office has to be the most volatile and unpredictable in the world. There taste in US films is also often suspect. But keeps it interesting.

That's one reason I like it so much.

The market is big enough for a film to do huge business, 100+, 150+, 200+.

Legs are impossible to predict, but are always huge when compared to most of the world. An example being 20th Century Boys Part 1. 5.7M opening, 44M finish. And on a much greater scale, Ponyo opened to 13M, finished with 170M. May seem like absolutely monster legs, but Howl's Moving Castle had a similar opening and finished even higher. And the same is true for several other films which open to mid teens. The only films that tend to have normal legs we are used to seeing are...well, our own films being released there as well as other imported films. Frontloadness really doesnt exist for local films.

Weekdays are just as strong as the Weekends during most of the year from what I've noticed by following the BO in Japan since Ponyo opened last July. I'll go ahead and use QOS. 1st Weekend - 6.5M. 2nd Weekend - 2.6M. And it has a total of 12.8M, so it made nearly 4M (50% more than it's 2nd Weekend) from it's first Weekdays. Though QOS was naturally frontloaded. Sequel + Hollywood Film, so wait until 20th Century Boys Part 2 this time next week to see a what I really mean.

It interests me because it's so much different than the Box Office here.

And are you calling Pokemon questionable taste? hehe.

No Im calling Kingdom of the Krystal Scull questionable taste :P

I agree the market is very different to anywhere else. Do they still get US films months and months after domestic release or have things improved?

How well do you think Astroboy will do in Japan?

I wonder how Mamma Mia's legs will be over there.

Well, two recent examples are Wall-E and Mamma Mia on how late they get some of the films. I know Japan is Mamma Mia's last market. It was probably Wall-E's as well. But Indy, The Dark Knight, Iron Man were all released somewhat close to their US releases. In fact, I think Japan was one of the first markets to get Indy. Iron Man was a few months later if I remember correctly, I do know The Dark Knight was released before it and this was sometime in late July/Aug or so.

I'm certainly no expert, I'm always surprised by several films each week on how well they held, opened or something.

Concerning Astroboy, I think I read the entire film is in trouble? Meaning it'll get delayed or something. This was weeks ago, I don't remember what was going on exactly. But everyone was expecting Transformers to do big business in Japan, and it had a boring 34M finish. If Astroboy is comparable in some way.

Dragonball though, I'd bet on it doing well right now. It's being released there first, March 13th, and it's getting heavy marketing from what I can tell. They managed to get Ayumi Hamasaki (Japan's Biggest Pop Star) to sing the theme song which will be used worldwide too, including a video and everything soon. Which will likely go No.1 (the song) since most Ayumi songs do and the movie buzz will certainly help, and vice versa. I'm a Dragonball fan (think the movie looks terrible though), so I'm interested in how it'll perform right now.

Also interested to see how Transformers 2 does. Harry Potter 6 and whether or not it can turn the franchise around. 20th Century Boys Chapter 3 since Chapter 2 opened so well. Part 3 could be huge since I think it'll have a June/July release. And the 12th Pokemon Movie being released in July. The latest movie, No.11, managed to beat the first movie to become the biggest in the franchise (and it even opened against Ponyo), so it'll be interesting to see how the next one does. All these I have interest in right now.

Some Information about the 2009 Film Schedule.

Hollywood, which ceded a majority share in Japan to homegrown competition in 2008, will have a stronger lineup in 2009, including new installments in the "Harry Potter" and "Terminator" series, as well as "Dragonball Evolution," a highly hyped live-action version of the classic "Dragonball" anime, to be released here by 20th Century Fox.

Also expected to draw crowds are the remaining two parts of John Woo's "Red Cliff" period action trilogy set in China. The first has grossed nearly ¥5 billion, a record for an Asian film in Japan.

SPRING

Coming up in March is "General Rouge no Gaisen" ("The Glorious Team Batista 2"), a TBS-produced followup to the 2007 hit starring Yuko Takeuchi as a spacey but intuitive hospital counselor and Hiroshi Abe as an obnoxious but sharp government bureaucrat who, in the new film, team up once again to solve a medical mystery. This pair's first on-screen puzzle was not so puzzling, but their quirks and quarrels were entertaining enough.

Following in April is "Crows Zero II," a sequel to the 2007 hit about gang warfare in a bottom-of-the-barrel boys' high school, inspired by a best-selling Hiroshi Takahashi comic. Director Takashi Miike, Japan's King of Cult, and star Shun Oguri, the ultimate ikemen (pretty boy) pin-up, are back for the sequel, as are the many scenes of strobed mano-a-mano mayhem.

Miike is also responsible for "Yattaman" (titled "Yatterman" for foreign release, for some reason), a goofy-looking action comedy — based on a well-remembered 1970s TV anime — that Shochiku and Nikkatsu will release in March.

SUMMER

Based on the life of legendary 16th-century ninja and bandit Ishikawa Goemon, the film boasts two years of research, 100 sets, 2,500 CG cuts, 1,000 extras and a staff of 300. Despite being made with far fewer resources, "Casshern" had not only the scale and look, but the mad ambition of silent-era Hollywood's more extravagant follies and masterpieces. We can only hope that "Goemon" will be more of the same, squared. Release is set for May.

This summer, Toho will open "Manatsu no Orion" ("Last Operations Under the Orion"), a World War II naval action film directed by Tetsuo Shinohara and based on a novel by Tsukasa Ikegami. Heartthrob Hiroshi Tamaki plays a submarine captain, and Keiko Kitagawa appears as both the hero's love interest and his present-day granddaughter. Japanese WWII films, usually with a nationalist slant, have become hot at the local box office — the hit 2008 courtroom drama "Watashi wa Kai ni Naritai" ("I Want to Be a Seashell") is one recent example, though sales to Asia have been "slow."

An even bigger summer film is "Amalfi: Megami no 50-byo ("Amalfi: the Goddess's 50 Seconds"), a suspenser starring Yuji Oda — Japan's answer to Tom Cruise — as a diplomat in the title Italian resort town who investigates the disappearance of a Japanese girl. "Amalfi," which commemorates Fuji TV's 50th anniversary, is the first Japanese film shot entirely in Italy.

FALL

This fall, Takashi Yamazaki, the director of the hit "Always" nostalgic dramas, returns with "Ballad: Namonaki Koi no Uta" ("Ballad: Nameless Song of Love"), a period drama whose story is bizarrely based on an award-winning 2002 episode in the "Crayon Shinchan" kiddie animation series. "Ballad," which stars SMAPster Tsuyoshi Kusanagi as a samurai general and idoru (manufactured entertainer) star Yui Aragaki as the girl with whom he falls in love, has a production budget, including lavish CGI, of ¥2 billion — considered the upper limit for a domestic film.

Continuing the trend for multipart films, which started two years ago with the smash-hit "Death Note" duology, is the three-part "20th Century Shonen" ("20th Century Boys"). Directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi, this trilogy is based on Naoki Urasawa's best-selling manga about a gang of boys who, grown to adulthood, see their childhood prophecies of worldwide devastation come horrifying true. The first installment, released last August, reeled in nearly ¥4 billion, to the enormous relief of the producers, led by the NTV network, who sank ¥6 billion into this project.

The second part will hit theaters on Jan. 31 and the third later in 2009, though Toho has not yet announced a firm date.

There are only two Red Cliff films, not three as far as I know.

a few numbers.

Ben Button debuted at No.2 with 3.6M
Mamma Mia drops to 2.5M (probably good enough for 3rd).
Bond drops to 1.3, about a 50% drop. Crappy legs.

So 20th Century Boys Chapter 2 is going to be No.1 again, and looks to be a sub 50% drop.

Feb 7 - 8

Nationwide Box Office
This Week/Last Week/Title/Distributor/Week#

1 1 20th Century Boys -Chapter 2- (JPN.) Toho 2
2 NEW THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON WB 1
3 2 MAMMA MIA! Toho Towa 2
4 NEW Penguins In The Sky - Asahiyama Zoo (JPN.) Kadokawa
5 3 QUANTUM OF SOLACE SPE 3
6 NEW HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3: SENIOR YEAR Disney 1
7 4 Pandemic (JPN.) Toho 4
8 7 Go-ongers vs Gekirengers (JPN.) Toei 3
9 6 CHE: PART TWO GAGA/Nikkatsu 2
10 NEW Heaven's Door (JPN.) Asmik 1

Numbers later in the week, but...

20th Century Boys Chapter 2 is going to surpass Chapter 1 I think. I don't know how much it dropped, but to beat Ben Button's est 3.6M debut, it had to drop under 45%. No solid numbers yet, but I'm gonna call a finish around north of Y4.5B (50M+).

Pretty blah debut for HSM3. Can't be much more than 1M since Quantom of Solace grossed an est 1.3M this weekend.

20th Century Boys Chapter 2 might have a harder time beating Chapter 1 now that I look at Chapter 1's performance.

Both after Week 2:

1 (2) Twentieth Century Boys Toho $4,060,361 -30 310 0 $13,097 8 $14,515,955
1(1) Twentieth Century Boys 2 (Jap) Toho 2 $3,793,611 374 10,143 -44 14,599,052

However, the only new opener that made any impact in Chapter 1's Second Weekend was Nim's Island with a lame No.6 debut with $800,000, while Chapter 2 had Ben Button and both HSM3/Penguins doing over 1M.

We'll see what happens in Week 3.
