James Berardinelli really likes Slumdog Millionaire as well:

Quote:
The film has all the elements necessary to make it a major winner in general release, and a dark horse Oscar contender. It's superbly acted, wonderfully photographed, and full of rich, unconventional location work. Dev Patel has us rooting for the shy, good-natured Jamal from the beginning. Freida Pinto is beguiling as Latika. Anil Kapoor, a big name in Bollywood, is deliciously devious as the gameshow host whose motives are ruled by more than a desire to see his program get good ratings. Imagine Alex Trebek after having been seduced by the dark side of the force. The story works on multiple levels - it can be seen as a sweeping romance, as a thriller, or as a glimpse at the ways in which a fast-developing economy is convulsing the fabric of Indian society. Some of the film's funniest and most satirical scenes occur within a massive call bank where customer service operatives try to convince callers that they are not, in fact, located in a foreign country. The movie ends with a grand Bollywood song-and-dance number that is not to be missed. Placed between the conclusion of the story proper and the end credits, this sequence dares anyone to leave the theater in anything but the best of spirits.

Oh god, no! That's the only film left that I'll actually be able to see in the calender year that I'm looking forward to.

You folks sure get upset over one blog posting.

The blog compares it to Forrest Gump and Titanic in places, "Apparently the older crowd was digging it and weepy, but it sounds like a film younger audiences and younger critics might not get behind and support whole hog."

Yeah, sounds awful.

Milk got a 96 from BFCA, so that looks pretty safe too.

The Dark Knight/Slumdog Millionaire/Milk both look very safe.

Do you think that if the Academy snubs The Dark Knight for a BP nom at this point it would cause a scandal?

I don't think they'll totally ignore it, but the big circles might be less generous than the smaller ones. Sort of how less-known critics gave it higher ratings.

SAG will totally go for The Dark Knight.

Hell, if 3:10 to Yuma could get an ensemble nom then TDK surely can as well.

Otherwise I expect a PGA nom (D'uh), a WGA nom obviously a Best Sup. Actor SAG nom. DGA is the only somewhat shaky one IMO.

Yeah, unless Australia is a total disaster, it will own the Globes, heh. I see about 6-7 noms for it there (Cold Mountain-like).

Like I said, TDK wouldn't be totally ignored by critics or critical circles. Even if the bigger players are slightly less enthusiastic, the ground support is great.

NY/LA won't be as receptive, I know, though they won't totally ignore it. The smaller circles (say Chicago or Boston) will support it.

One thing for sure:

If TDK wins either New York or LA for BP...it'll become a near-lock for the BP Oscar win, IMO. Because if it can get them, it will get PGA/SAG/WGA as well.
