All That Jazz
All That JazzQuote: All That Jazz is a 1979 American musical film directed by Bob Fosse. The screenplay by Robert Alan Aurthur and Fosse is a semi-autobiographical fantasy based on aspects of the dancer, choreographer, and director's life and career. The film was inspired by Fosse's manic effort to edit his film Lenny while simultaneously staging his 1975 Broadway musical Chicago. It borrows its title from a Kander and Ebb tune in that production.

Fosse's film smashes the musical form, and is truly one of the greatest films ever made. It's totally overwhelming, and I find myself watching it over and over again, in awe of the craft and always finding new nuances. It is also a master class in film editing. Incredible.
Here's a great essay on the film:

It's been awhile since I last saw the film and I just got the new DVD so the review will be up soon enough...

Oh I agree, Fosse smashes and turns the musical form upside down in All That Jazz. I never found myself enjoying and having fun with a dark, dark musical about self-destruction and the inevitable release/satisfaction that only one's death would bring to it. As one song asserted, I did take off with this movie.
The musical numbers are evenly spaced but each one is wonderfully chaotic and controlled. Air-otica has got to be my favorite. ("Uh oh, I see we just lost the family audience," said one character in the movie while viewing the perverse, sweaty, sexual number). The present storyline, Bob Fosse's, er I mean Joe Gideon's (a terrific Roy Scheider) hallucinations/fantasy sequences, and the surreal scenes with Angelique, The Angel of Death (Jessica Lange!!!!) are all seamlessly edited (well-deserved Oscar win for this) and photographed. A young CCH Pounder also appears in a brief role as a crooked nurse.
Just a great film.

An excellent, if morbid, auto-biographical take on life and death. It's funny, the left side of my brain is saying that I'm not too pumped to watch this again, because it's definitley not a fun movie to watch (despite being a musical, ha), while the other side is saying I can't wait to because of how much it says about life and how many scenes I want to stick my teeth into again.
The above two reviews are also right in that it's the anti-musical, where the typical addition to the genre would be all fluff and dance and no worry happiness, this is completley the opposite, it kind of rips apart the typical fluff and happiness a showbusiness man would have.
Fosse's choreography, great of course, awesome set design and technicals too here. The entire cast delivers in spades (I would've liked more Schneider-Lange screentime though, those scenes were awesome), pushing the story forward.
Absolutely top-notch stuff for sure.

Love your review, Shack. Love it!
I know you say you don't feel like watching it again, but in a bit, reconsider. It was only on second viewing that I realized how marvelously the whole thing was constructed.
I'm so glad you sought it out. You mentioned in the Cabaret thread that you were apprehensive...but this was not 8 1/2!

I insist that the bastard who voted "F" show him-or-her-or-itself and explain such madness.

Re: All That Jazz
My hope is that now that the election crap is almost over I will not feel obligated to spend all my moving-picture time watching CNN. I can't seem to turn it off.
I'll make sure it's in the next 5 non-theater films I watch.

Re: All That Jazz
This is not a traditional musical. People aren't randomly breaking into song.
It's also, I believe, one of the ten greatest films ever made. Watch it, dude. This is supreme cinema.

Re: All That Jazz
I'm disappointed, yosh, I even set you up for a don't call me Shirley joke!
I've actually seen way too few musicals to call myself a hater, and I even like most of the ones I've seen. It's just that when Hairspray or Mamma Mia or High School Musical 3 comes out, I have no desire to want to see them; indeed, the trailers make me want to kill myself.
I think I'd like this, though. It seems dark and moody - my kind of film!
