Re: Well...the 2008 Contenders Discussion Thread
With Changeling out of the best picture race, I think Gran Torino is thisclose to getting in.
1. The Dark Knight 2. Milk 3. Australia 4. Doubt 5. Slumdog Millionaire
6. Revolutionary Road 7. Gran Torino 8. Frost/Nixon 9. The Wrestler 10. Rachel Getting Married ?? Happy-Go-Lucky- ??

Re: Well...the 2008 Contenders Discussion Thread
I have no idea what to think of Gran Torino at the moment. It's essentially Dirty Harry retired in what Paul Haggis would think Detroit is like.
I'm just gonna cautiously leave it off at the moment.

The Reader - Sometimes I feel this has a better chance than RR but it's been through a shit-storm to get released this year, so I don't know how much that will play into it. It is Harvey Weinstein though.
I'd say Milk just needs to be a good movie to get in. Politically, they could not have picked a better year but if the early word is true that it's not that great, then I don't know...
Same with Australia. If it's good, it's in. We need an epic in there. We haven't had one in 5 years.
I think Doubt may play out like Closer.
Edited after Gran Torino trailer

Definitely wouldn't be surprised to see Cadillac Records jump in the race with this weak year

Jon, your signature made me laugh for a solid thirty seconds.
I'll say it again; Clint needs to sit the next couple of plays out.

Re: Well...the 2008 Contenders Discussion Thread
They may aswell give Wall-E a push as the competition is VERY weak.
If Wall-E and TDK both get nominated - we should have the highest grossing Best Picture bunch since 1997.

I'm dieing here! The World Premeire for Milk was just held in San Francisco this past Sunday. A fellow Reno critic who works for the city paper went to it. I expect there should be a few reviews out fairly soon.

Re: Well...the 2008 Contenders Discussion Thread
No full length reviews yet for Milk, but Tapley was a bit mixed but praised the performances, Wells gave it 8.5 but came off more as a 6/10 review boosted by "I'm Jeff Wells and even though this movie wasn't great, I declare anyone who doesn't support it because of its honest effort and heart, in other words because I'm a biased left asshole who's been pimping this film for months, is mean-spirited"(he actually used the words "mean-spirited", btw). Poland loved it.

Re: Well...the 2008 Contenders Discussion Thread
Yeah, I knew Milk wasn't going to get big praise. More of a Notes On A Scandal type film.

After seeing the trailer, I think Slumdog is pretty much in
TDK The Curious Case of Benjamin Button Slumdog Millionaire The Wrestler Doubt

Valkyrie's new trailer is fantastic. Maybe we should add it to the shortlist?

Re: Well...the 2008 Contenders Discussion Thread
Anne Thompson of Variety points to good things for RR: Quote: An editor friend sent me an email from the first long-lead screening of Revolutionary Road:
"first screening long lead today at paramount. the word from me is wow! very powerful two-hander for Leo and Kate, all grown up now as a married couple unhappy but still in love. they go at it fiercely and you can sense the real-life bond that lets them really go for it, all defenses down. it's powerful and also beautifully written and filmed. Sam Mendes doing suburban angst again, but this time in the 1950s. I daresay it may be a modern classic. also, the screenplay race this year is unusually light on adaptations, so this being an adaptation of the Richard Yates novel, I'd look for a nomination. " Obviously not a real review yet, but I have to say every word I've heard about RR so far has been much better than I would've expected after that trailer.

Benjamin Buttons vs. TDK for Best Picture this year.
TDK is building a good case to win IMO.

Re: Well...the 2008 Contenders Discussion Thread
I'm liking how more and more likely WALL-E is. I'm sure the Reader will be good, but I have an awful feeling that the Weinsteins will sabotage it.
I think Milk needs more reception still.
