Excellent multiplier for Burn After Reading, though it should slightly drop with actuals.

The Family That Preys is another confirmation in the long line of successes for the Tyler Perry train.

Righteous Kill cannot be sneered at either, solid opening weekend for a film that very well could've flopped.

The Women also deserves accolades for hitting the 10 million mark.

Diane English said she would love it if The Woman had a $9m or $10m opening. She has got her wish. It will be interesting to see the legs it will have. Most films aimed at older women tend to be leggy.

Nice weekend, great for all openers.

Next weekend will return to normal September bores, as My Best Friends Girl seems guaranteed to top the box office with about $12-13m.

Family That Preys most likely won't cross $40M though...

Right time and right place for all of these openers, any other time of the year and they wouldn't have opened as well...except for Burn.

Holdovers, excellent as well. Looks like that TDK will be making more than TT after this weekend, since its UBERlegs have kicked in. I guess TDK and the House Bunny are going to be in an epic battle for the rest of their runs.

Is it just me, or would a movie like Hellboy II really clean up in Sept, maybe even flirt with 100 mil.

Great weekend for the openers and a great recovery from last weekend.

Good to great for all the openers. I wasn't sure Burn After Reading had the appeal to do very well, but I guess it shows again that an appealing ensemble does so much more than one star. This is actually now Clooney's biggest non-franchise opening. I'm guessing legs won't be that great, but $50 million looks assured, barring really bad WOM.

This is Tyler Perry's second lowest opening, but his original films seem to do not as well as those based on his plays. Madea Goes to Jail should do very well next spring.

Righteous Kill again shows the powering of combining stars for extra appeal. Both stars are barely draws on their own anymore, but this was all Pacino/de Niro in the advertising, and that payed off. Overture is doing pretty well now after The Visitor, Traitor and now this. They don't have much left on their schedule, but not a bad start.

The stars of The Women currently have next to zero draw on their own, so yet again, the Power of Ensemble. Seriously, if this weekend showed anything, it's that combining stars works really, really well.

Tropic Thunder passes $100 million! And TDK passes $515 million. Shut up, getluv.

GREAT rebound weekend.

It's possible, but I think the sequel overperformed opening weekend as there was so much hype for Batman the following week, and it was almost an appetizer in a sense. Kind of like how Mummy overperformed leading up to SW Ep. I.

Fly Me to the Moon is having pretty incredible legs. Its 4th weekend is only down 29% from its opening weekend. 3D really helps a lot.

Excellent openings for Burn After Reading and The Family That Preys.

Also very solid for Righteous Kill. The Women's opening is decent considering how low the budget ended up being for it, the awful reviews, and the fact that the audience was probably 90% women over 35.

Great hold for The House Bunny, which has become a nice sleeper hit. It should cross $50M with relative ease.

Tropic Thunder and The Dark Knight continue to maintain solid weekend numbers.

A horrifically bad drop for Bangkok Dangerous, not that it wasn't expected.

Journey to the Center of the Earth is $2M away from 100, Step Brothers just crossed it.

saw that coming. I had pegged it for high teens on the back of SATC and MAMMA MIA advertising, but its ads blew chunks.

Fun fact: The openers combined outgrossed the entire top 12 of this weeekend last year.

Also, Journey is very close for 100 million.
House Bunny is a legitimate contender for 50 million.
And that opening for Towelhead is not too encouraging, especially for being in only 4 theaters.

Proud America has to have the lowest PTA ever for an opener, wide or limited, right? $150 basically means 1 person per show for the entire weekend.

Semi-wide maybe. The lowest pta in the world is still Zzyxx Road.

BTW, this is far and away the biggest opening for a Focus Features film ever (Eternal Sunshine?, and their first #1. It's actually already #9 on their all time list, and that's with Billy Elliot miscredited towards the studio!

Also, is that the worst drop from #1 for an opener ever, for Bangkok Dangerous? I know The Passion dropped from #1 tp #9 after Easter, but otherwise?

You mean ranking wise? Yeah, it's going to be hard to think of another case. It needs such a "perfect" scenario from one poor weekend to a good one with multiple openers.

Especially House Bunny, TDK and Mamma Mia, which held up incredibly despite direct competition.

Wasn't sure if Journey would have been able to hit 100M (similar sititation as Meet the Robinsons), but with a 10% drop and only needing a 2x from this weekend's gross, it's locked to cross 100M now.

What hurt Traitor so much?

Direct competitions, especially from The Family That Preys for its urban audience (PG-13 rated too).

I'd actually say Righteous Kill was more direct competition.

That's R-rated though, and past history showed the films with same ratings tend to hurt each other more; on the other hand, R could actually PG-13 films with sneak-ins.

Hulk dropped just a little more too, although actual could change that.
