Not that anything else either than Ponyo has even crossed 40m

I'm not sure, they've juse been decreasing year after year, while the local films have remained strong. The only US film this year to cross 50M has been Indiana Jones, which is around 53M I think, though it doesn't have too much left. I would guess a mid 50M finish. And there doesn't seem to be any more US films this year that will beat Indiana Jones. Potter likely would have (though each film has been decreasing), but the last one made around 75M I think, and if it would follow the downward trend, HP6 would have likely made around 60/65. I suppose Wall-E is possible candidate too, though it opens in DEC, so if it makes 40+, it won't until 2009. I don't think it'll do that well though.

More than just Ponyo has crossed 40M this year. 3 films (I don't remember the titles at the moment) made over 40M in the first half of the year, Boys Over Flowers is currently at 66M, and will likely be the No.2 film of the year. Seems headed for about the max any film since Howl's Moving Castle back in 2004/2005, with around 80M perhaps. Indiana Jones is a little above 50M, Pokemon the 11th Movie is at 40M right now, and can reach 50+. The summer has been quite strong. Toho beat their own record last month making 110M+ for the month of July thanks to Ponyo, Pokemon, and Boys Over Flowers. The month they happened to beat was their own record, the opening month for Spirited Away.

But it's clear the market isn't as big as it was even 4 years ago. 100M+ wasn't that difficult for the blockbuster. The first three Potter films all made 100+ with ease, and now they aren't making much more than 50% of that. It's notable that just 2 films have grossed over 100M since 2004/2005 (before 04/05, several films made over 100M), and both have been Miyazaki films (Howl's Moving Castle and Ponyo), which made/and will make double what the closest films to them have made.

Wow. It's incredible that such a profitable industry could descend so fast into the abyss.
That'd be like the domestic market failing to hit 200m in 2012.
Pretty shocking, I wonder why the Japanese market has been on such a decrease...

Don't they have some economic problems, like a downturn or something?

The overall Box office take for the year has been decreasing, but not by too much. The local films are remaining strong, and even seeing nice increases yearly. It's just Hollywood films that keep decreasing.

TOKYO -- Hayao Miyazaki toon "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea" has passed the 10 million admission mark in Japan, taking in 12 billion yen ($109.6 million) and putting it on track to become one of the biggest B.O. hits of all time in the country.

Bowing on July 19, the toon reached the milestone on Aug. 28, its 41st day of release. By comparison Miyazaki's 2001 "Spirited Away," Japan's all-time B.O. champ at $278 million, needed only 31 days to hit 10 million, while his 2004 "Howl's Moving Castle" took 44 days and his 1997 "Princess Mononoke" took 66. The latter two toons are the Nos. 2 and 3 all-time Japanese B.O. winners, respectively.

"Ponyo" is in release on 481 screens, a record for a Japanese pic.

Despite the Summer Olympics, the toon has continued to pack theaters throughout its run, with families the biggest demo.

Very nice, 109.6M before the weekend began, and it's still tracking ahead of Howl's Moving Castle and Princess Mononoke. It's funny because unlike most of the world, 10M admissions is pretty close to the amount of individual people who have seen the film. The avg person in Japan only sees 1-2 films a year.

I think that Wall-E could have a great run in Japan. It seems like a movie that Japanese people would like.

I'm keeping my hopes low so if it doesn't do all that well, it won't seem like it didn't. :P

Also, still no numbers yet for this weekend, grrrr! Though Ponyo placed 3rd this weekend behind two new openers, Hancock and Twentieth Century Boys (JPN.). But it should have added around 500M YEN (4.5M USD), with a total around 12.5B YEN (116M USD). But we'll see when the numbers come.

neo, you posted last week's gross before any of the usual sites I visit did, if you know it this time can you post it pllllllease. :D

Quote:
Sony Pictures Entertainment's Hancock and local broadcaster NTV's 20th Century Boys have knocked Studio Ghibli's Ponyo On The Cliff By The Sea down to third place after six weeks in the number one spot at the Japanese box office.

Hancock earned $7.67m (Y830m) on 328 screens, including grosses from previews last weekend.

The opening eclipses Will Smith's previous release, I Am Legend, which took in $5.35m on 422 screens last December. SPE is aiming for a Y4bn ($37m) final tally. The company recorded its best year ever in the territory last year with earnings of $150.46m (Y16.27bn).

In second place, the first installment in NTV's mega-budget 20th Century Boys trilogy opened on 310 screens, taking in $5.78m (Y625.6m) for a high $18,660 per screen average. Distributor Toho expects earnings to surpass Y5bn ($46.23m). The trilogy is budgeted at $55m.

The film had its world premiere in Paris on August 19 and has already been sold to around 20 territories including France, the UK, Australia and Korea, where it will have the widest opening ever for a Japanese live-action film on September 11. The second and third chapters will open in six month intervals. Naoki Urasawa's epic manga series on which the film is based has sold over 20 million copies.

The success of both films signaled the end of the younger fare that dominated the summer period, led by Ponyo.

Ponyo has amassed $117.42m (Y12.7bn) since its July 19 opening as the most successful domestic release since Hayao Miyazaki's own Howl's Moving Castle in 2004. The film had its international premiere in Venice on August 30.

No idea why they don't have what it made over the weekend, but it had to make around 4.5M or so, which would have been about a 12% drop in it's 7th weekend.

NUMBERZ!

First Weekend: 13.8M
Second Weekend: 7.5M [822M] (-46%); (29.3M [3.2B] total)
Third Weekend: 7.2M [790M] (-3%); (48M [5.25B] total)
Fourth Weekend; 6.85M [750M] (-5%); (65.4M [7.2B] total)
Fifth Weekend: 7.7M [844M] (+12.8%); (90M total [10B]*Holiday Week*)
Sixth Weekend: 5.24M [578M] (-32%); (104.2M total [11.5B])
Seventh Weekend: 4.5M est [490M] (-12%); (117.4M total [12.7B])

First Week: 14.3M [1.56B]
Second Week: 15.01M [1.65B], +700K [+76.6M] (total - 29.3M [3.2B])
Third Week: 18.45M [2.05B], +3.44M [+375M] (total - 48M [5.25B])
Fourth Week: 17.6M [1.93B], -850K [-282M] (total - 65.5M [7.2B])
Fifth Week: 25.4M [2.77B], +7.8M [+855M] (total - 90M [10B])*Holiday Week*
Sixth Week: 14.2M [1.55B] , -11.2M (total - 104.2M [11.5B])
Seventh Week: 13.2M [1.41B], -1.0M (total - 117.4M [12.7B])

Note: I don't have the actual 7th weekend number, but it has to be almost exactly 4.5M [490M] for the Seventh Week total to work out. Assuming no holidays or anything special is happening over the this week, I think Ponyo will make around 11M [1.2B] in it's 8th week, putting it's total around 127/128M [13.8B] after 8 weeks. It'd then need about 30M [3.25B] to break into the Top 5 All Time, which can be reached in 3-4 more weeks I think.

Nice start for Hancock, slightly better than Mummy 3. Let's just hope it holds better than Mummy 3 has been.

Twentieth Century Boys is part 1 of a big budget trilogy, and had a nice opening. Nearly a 20K PTA. I have a feeling it'll have some very strong legs and end up above 40M.

Pokemon the 11th Movie had the second best hold in the top 10 (Ponyo having the best), and needs just 3/4M more to become the highest grossing in the franchise, which is a lock at this point. 50M+ will probably happen.

Boys Over Flowers continues it's very strong run. It will cross 75M, and will probably be No.2 for the year.

Miyazaki is like the Japanese version of late 70s/early 80s Spielberg, only probably more so.

Ponyo COULD be back at No.1 this weekend.

Hancock dropped a little over 50% to 3.5M, and Ponyo should be above 4M. And Twentieth Century Boys would likely need a drop under 30%, which isn't likely it's second weekend. So unless a new opener made over 4M, Ponyo looks like it could be back at No.1.

Climbed to No.2. Twentieth Century Boys must have had a sub 30% drop (no wonder, the openers were junk, so that hopefully means the holds were even stronger than expected for most films) It will probably be quite the hit, and already an excellent start to that trilogy.

Numbers will be released in a few days.

Neo, if you have them before I come back (I'll be gone for a few days), could you post them plz? :)

Ack, just noticed Boys Over Flowers is out of the top 10 (making it difficult to find numbers for now) after 10 weeks.

3.5M this past weekend (the drops all around were a little harsh, I'll have to figure out why somewhere), and it stands at 126M now. I'll update the numbers a little later.

No idea why Pokemon the 11th Movie saw that huge drop for, unless those 14 theatres it lost were among the most popular ones or something. 50M will be very difficult now, though it should still be the biggest film of the franchise, 3M shy.

School is also starting back (though that doesn't seem to hurt films too much), so that could be part of the reason for drops. And it could just be a weak weekend, dunno.

Very good hold for Twentieth Century Boys though, could end up being a big hit.

Post Re: Japan Box Office Thread (Ponyo 125.4M, 13.61B)
Hmm, some of the numbers might be changing after this weekend.

13.6 JPY apparently equals approx. 130M USD, not the 125.4M. If this Variety Japan article is correct, and they say the film exceeded 14B JPY (11M admissions), not including this past weeekend which still hasn't been released, well, at the usual sites anyway. Which would mean about 135M USD. I don't know how it could have added so much in that short of time. Unless it was a holiday week perhaps, not sure. Can the trade currency change so fast?

Anyway, numbers should be coming tomorrow to figure this out, I hope.
