Friday - 57
Saturday - 44
Sunday - 35.5

HBP OW: 136.54

Yep, I think this'll be MASSIVE, and take down DMC's OW for 4th place all time [ Because TF2 would have beaten it before then ]

And why may I ask you will the 6th Potter movie all of a sudden see this massive increase to 137 million when the Potter franchise has been very consistent with its OW?

Friday - 53 (13 from midnight)
Saturday - 38
Sunday - 30

Weekend - 121

Even though the Potter openings are generally consistent, I feel like this should still match Phoenix's five-day opening of $139.7m, even though Prince opens Friday and that opened Wednesday, especially given a two-year gap, a lot of build-up and anticipation, and an extra IMAX boost from what Phoenix received.

Because OOTP OD was 4M higher than GOF's, and GOF opened on a Friday, and OOTP on a Wednesday. If OOTP opened on a Friday, it's OD would be in the upper 40's. So I'll give the same reason's again for an OD of 57M, Higher ticket prices, IMAX growing immensly [ There's supposed to be 200+ IMAX screens by next summer, so if that's true HBP will have about 150, which is over 50% more than TDK. ], and it's getting closer to the end so it should add a little more hype to this.

Plus the two year gap (the largest gap thus far) between Order and Prince should raise much hype.

GOF opened in November and OOTP opened in July. So yeah the opening day will be higher. Compare POA to CS, the first time we saw the 18 month release date strategy. POA had an OD of 38 million versus an OD of 29.6 million for CS. But then compare OW 88.3 for CS to 93.6 for POA. Just a 6% increase, which covers inflation and the change to a summer release date.

IMAX and inflation will not be reason enough for the 35 million increase over GOF three day or the 13 million increase OD over OOTP. The same exact people show up to the Potter movies and this one won't be too different. IMAX and inflation might help it get to Spider-man OW but no where near DMC. There's really no logic in that kind of an increase when the Potter movies have been very stable.

So could IMAX have played a role in the move
http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/art ... RTUNE5.htm

I read somewhere that IMAX expects to triple its theater count in the next year. So Potter's IMAX numbers will double what it would have been in November. You think WB saw the extra dollar signs from that?

Possible. Plus it will have absolutely nothing after it. It can dominate quite a bit, especially if it's even better than 3+4 and Yates has learned the editing mistakes from the last.

Well fans are not at all happy about the release date change. There's actually a petition that's garned 25000 sigs already!!! and it's even made the news! So i think most fans are going to boycott this movie. The fans weren't happy with OotP (they took too much out) and now that the book series is finished eberyone is taslking about twilight now instead of good old HP. Sooo an OW of just under 60M seems likely and a total of around 150M is likely. It'll follow the pather of Prince Caspian. It's a shame becuase the HP series is really quite wonderful.

I think you must be 10 based on your spelling. My 9 year old nephew can spell because. Also the petitions don't mean anything. Star Wars fans were notorious for doing petitions and that didn't stop them from going to see the prequels. Also shut up about twilight, I am going to laugh when that only does like 100-150 million.

Post Re: Half-Blood Prince Over 115m OW Club
wait, i've been outta town for the last week and a half...

why the fuck did they move it back to 2009??!?!

anyways, it's still doing huge numbers, especially since I don't think summer '09 has anything promising after Transformers 2 (which will be a month into release by this point, so it's okay). i guess it could do very well amidst little competition, but I still think holiday season is better...

maybe they're doing this so that they can release both DH films in Holiday Season (2010 and 2011)?

i'm going with around a 120m OW for now.

The biggest thing which will hurt this is if it's as bad or worse than OotP.
If Yates fails to deliver for the second time I suspect DH will be below GoF.
Phoenix was the worst HP movie I'm sure, shit editing, badly directed, crap script too.
I for one won't watch the final Potter movies if Yates bludgeons HBP to death.
Even with the switch of directors for the first four they maintained great but Phoenix was :grrr:
Wait until we see the length of this movie. If it's shorter than Phoenix which it has 90% chance of being so I won't watch it either. Yates should be shot. I don't care, maybe it'll make HBP do better and give us another director for DH.

I have never been a big Potter fan. I am actually waiting till all 8 movies are on DVD and then I will watch them, minus hype and completley objective. But I still will never get why they hired a no-name like Yates. I am sure most directors, talented directors with a great resume and pedigree would have thrown themselves at a Potter movie, it would be like hiring me to do Batman 3.

I think you just answered your own question. Other reasons have been doled out, but I'm sure the emptiness of the summer 2009 schedule was a big part of the reason for the move. Warner Bros' next biggest release is Terminator Salvation, and that one looks to do $200-250 million at best, whereas Harry Potter can crack $300 million with inflation and weaker competition.

As for the 2008 holiday schedule: It does eliminate what was guaranteed to be the biggest hit, but really expands the potential of quite a few other releases.

Yates is known in the U.K and has done several very good UK TV movies. I understand he blew them away or something along those lines.

^^

Still OOTP was below average.

I am thinking WB will move the release date to wed. It has zero chance of going after any records and they will try to make as much as possible during OW. it will be front loaded as usual.

I would say 115M/290M for now.

That is a matter of opinion. I thought it was 100 times better than Chamber of Secrets and I liked it better than Prisoner of Azkaban. Still think Goblet of Fire has been the best. I think it will pass 300 and that is mainly because of the IMAX news. It will be on at least double of the amount of IMAX theaters that OOTP had. That there should give it it anywhere from another 10-20 million.

OOTP was very good, and the public seems to agree.

120/312

I think the immense lack of competition will help, and if it can manage to be the best yet, all the better. Have you seen the rest of the schedule post-Independence Day? It's sad.

July- August sucks with 2012 and Land of the Lost being the only films that look decent. I think Land of the Lost will get moved a week or two later though.
