Still an A-.
1. TDK - A- 2. Spidey - A- 3. Spidey 2 - A- 4. Batman Begins - A- 5. X2 - A- 6. Superman Returns/Iron Man - A- Easily the greatest superhero movie of all time....and yet it shares an 'A-' grade with six other superhero films? Just go ahead and get rid of that '-'. You know you want to. Superman Returns is also no A-, that film is more boring than Kong (2005)

Your right, BB was slighlty bland at times and lack charasma, while TDK has very charasmatic and always vivid . But seriously, you're very much right, and the best sequels of all time are different from their first film. (and to add on a note, Back to the Future Part 2 and Dead Man's Chest were very different in tone, theme, and story structure, and although they aren't highly regarded, I am a huge fan of both) as am I, DMC is criminally under rated.

 Re: The Dark Knight
I agree that BB and TDK totally different Batman movies.
I rewatched BB today (ON BLU RAY!!!!) and I have to say Cillian Murphy was sooooo good as Scarcrow/Crane. I always overlook him in this movie. I mean he doesnt even come close to Ledger in this one but he does a DAMN good job for how little he is in it. I do want to see him again in the next one. Even if he has a small scene like in TDK

It looks so incredible on Blu Ray. Plus you get the first 6 minutes of TDK on it.

The only thing I don't like about TDK is that its giving people this sudden reason to hate on BB. I also hate how people are saying that TDK is the first comic-book film that is going to make the movies start taking themselves more seriously when BB did it three years ago. Both the makers of Iron Man and Hulk have even stated that BB had an effect on the way they made their movies. Faverau said that he was only able to get that great cast for Iron Man because the cast of BB worked so well. Norton has even said that when they rebooting Hulk, they looked at BB and saw how it restarted that franchise (and while TIH wasn't a BB, I think the directors cut probably would be a lot closer to BB). BB to me was monumental, ground-breaking for comic-book movies that changed the genre. Hell, it probably goes beyond comic-books. BB succuess helped Casino Royale attempt in its reboot, as that was another franchise that had become to over-the-top and had to get more grounded with reality and depth. TDK is groundbreaking as well because I feel it has gone to an even further extreme than BB did, and its BO succuess probably will influence a lot of future projects. But fact is, BB was ground-breaking too three years ago. absolutely correct, BB is great and I view it at least 3 times a year, the film though different than TDK delivers just as perfectly.

Is that possible with Casino Royale coming out only a year after Batman Begins?

I found the Joker paraphrasing Stalin to be funny. I guess if you are going to link yourself to pure evil can't get much better!

 Re: The Dark Knight
Did anyone else notice this bit of social commentary?
That whole disappearing pencil trick scene...
I'm pretty sure that was a metaphor for America's increasing lack of educational standards. Maybe even a commentary on Bush's "No Child Left Behind" program which everyone knows is just a massive failure.
Just keep noticing new things about this movie the more I watch.

I find it quite odd that the 2 best movies this year both have the "main" characters saying...

I think you're on to something there Squee, and I also think Batman's sidetrip to Hong Kong is clearly a commentary on America's failing relations with China and the inevitable conflict that will brew from that.

 Re: The Dark Knight
Since we're overanalyzing, I thought that the fact that Nolan used some of society's generalized fears to build suspense was interesting and thought more people would bring it up. For example....
The big, scary, black inmate on one of the ferries. I felt Nolan was using the general belief that people are afraid of such men to enhance the suspense of whether or not he was going to blow up the boat. I loved what Nolan ended up doing there because it defied what Nolan wants you to expect (ie that he's gonna blow up the other ferry): still, it was an awkward moment I thought.

Its not just the pencil scene. its also the hospital blowing up, symbolizing the fact that kids aspiring to be doctors should find a safer line of work.
