You SHOULD watch it again, trust me. You'll catch some subtle things the second time around ie. At Harvey's fund raiser party, Bruce Wayne steps out to the balcony and tosses his champagne without drinking it. Later when Joker crashes the party, he tosses his champagne, drinking from an empty glass. Boo-yah! *symbolism*

I think there was something else Wayne says at that party that the Joker says as well, I noticed it the first time I saw it, but I'm having trouble remembering what it was...did anyone else notice?

King Kong was very good but far too long. It could have been a masterpiece had Peter Jackson decided to edit the movie. I have to agree with Magnus on this one. Nolan hasn't really made a bad movie yet. Even his worst movie (Insomnia) is decent.

King Kong was almost perfect.

Symbolism for what though?!

I'm confused.

Just maybe a little subtle hint that even though they are the ying and yang of each other, they still manage to have many similarities.

EDIT: Similar to the "hold still" lines uttered by both Brolin and Bardem in the beginning of NCFOM

Are you talking about both characters entering the room asking where Harvey Dent is?

I also thought the foreshadowing of Rachel's death from Alfred was well placed.

YES! That's it. And I liked the foreshadowing as well; sadly I saw it for what it was the first time, and it was almost like a spoiler. I mean, I don't think I've ever seen a hug that gave away more than the one between those two.

Oh I wasn't even talking about that piece of foreshadowing. In the fundraiser for Harvey, Harvey says "You're Alfred right? Rachel talks about you all the time. You've known her whole life?" To which, Alfred replies "Oh no, not yet sir"

I was thinking that part, I just couldn't remember the line. But I thought the hug was pretty telling as well.

I saw it for a third time yesterday morning in IMAX, which was incredible.

A few things stood out.

There are a lot of fuckin wires in the film.

Batman uses his grapple hook to save the hostages and battle the SWAT team in the finale.

The baddies use wires to down the helicopter.

The Batpod vs the truck

No more wires for The Dark Knight Returns please.

Also, who are the five people Harvey Two Face killed that Gordon/Batman were talking about at the end (Wertz, Maroni, Maroni's driver)?

And finally, when The Joker gave the locations of Harvey and Rachel to Batman and he says he's going about Rachel, how did he end up at Harvey's location? Did The Joker reverse the details on purpose because Batman didn't look surprised to see Dent? That's really the only explanation because he and Gordon would have both ended up at Rachel's location otherwise.

Joker definitely reversed the details; he wanted Dent alive.

I hate to burst EW's bubble, but that isn't symbolism, it is still a figurative device, but not symbolism unless they are trying to say they both try to drink from an empty well kind of message, but I think you're right Frenchie in saying they are trying to compare the two, in which case is not symbolism.

This is the last time I'm explaining it:

Joker switched the addresses.

He knew Batman would rescue Rachel, thus he told him where Dent was, because he needed/wanted Dent for a "new" plan. And by having Dent alive with Rachel dead, it would give Harvey that little extra "motivation".

Or it could have been a Freudian slip... I mean, he DID say he's just a dog chasing a car and wouldn't know what to do with it when he caught it.

It's kind of hard to say "best director of this decade"... I mean Nolan definitley has the edge in quantity of quality, he's got 4/5 movies this decade ranging from good to great to masterpiece (I haven't seen Insomnia yet). But I still think someone like David Lynch and the Coens and PTA are better than him, it's just hard to put them as "director of the decade" when they have like 2 movies in there each (or in the case of the Coens, two movies not counting the stretch where Fat Bastard stole their mojo and they and made Intolerable Cruelty and The Ladykillers). Same thing with Charlie Kaufman if you included him as a writer... if Being John Malkovich was released a year later in 00 and he had that, Adaptation, Eternal Sunshine, and the probable at worst interesting and unique Synechdoche, New York coming up, he'd probably be my choice, but without BJM, Synechdoche will have to be a masterpiece for me to give it to him. I think ranking directors of the decade is a lot more fruitless than ranking movies, though. But Nolan would be in there, I probably wouldn't have before TDK, but this movie's just so awesome and definitive for the genre like LOTR was for the fantasy genre... and while this shouldn't be a measure of quality, having the biggest movie of the decade and the second biggest movie of all time after it beats ANH gives him credance from a historical standpoint, if we're looking at things decade-wise.

Eventine wrote:
Did anybody think the Hong Kong subplot dragged the film a bit?

Yes, I really wasn't into the whole mob money stockpiling subplot, which is why I gave the film a strong 4.5/5 instead of full marks. The last 2/3s of the movie are absolutely perfect, though. I'm pretty sure I'll just end up giving it a 5 in spite of the flawed beginning just because of how awesome the rest is.

The Joker at the point had a good read on Batman at that point, and knew that he had a thing for Rachel. So to crush his spirit (which was The Joker's goal for the entire city), he switched the locations. The Joker knew that Batman would go after Harvey, which ultimately cause Rachel to die.

Ramirez.

Ramirez was spared by Harvey's coin. He just knocked her out.

And yeah, I thought it was obvious that Joker switched the locations once Batman got to Harvey. A very Jokerly thing to do, really.

I was more so pointing at EW, and I think the comparison angle is what was playing as it would compliment the duality in the relationship between the Joker and Batman.

Damn it Ledger, why di you have to die :tears: .

Damn! Never thought of them.

As for best director of the Decade.... I think Nolan is. Best in the past 20 years would be PTA.
