Post Re: WALL•E Predictions
I just can't wait to see the freaking movie. Usually movies open in Puerto Rico on Thursday but WALL-E's opening Friday for some reason. And I work Friday!! But I'll figure something out, either an early showing or a midnight screening, although I'd like to be refreshed and not sleepy or tired when I see the movie for the 1st time.

Anyway, I read an article today that said Disney's gonna open this in over 4,000 locations, so it's all there, everything is set up for a huge opening. But I don't wanna go SO high as to let myself down. After all, Ratatouille had a lower opening than most of Pixar's latest releases, so if you follow my drift... But then this seems like such a different scenario from that of Rataouille.

I can't come up with a prediction just yet.

I'm down from my earlier guess of $90M, but I still think it will be the highest OW for a Pixar Pic.
Can it beat Nemo? Only WOM will tell. This has a juggernaut of marketing to live up to.

If I may ask, why do you think it will open this strongly? Do you see a far greater appeal than both Finding Nemo & The Incredibles? I appreciate your thoughts.

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER:

This is getting to sound like a broken record: Pixar Animation Studios has just topped itself. Again. In "Wall-E," following the sublime culinary slapstick of "Ratatouille," Pixar and director/writer Andrew Stanton have spun a whimsical sci-fi fantasy about robots 800 years into the future that has all the heart, soul, spirit and romance of the very best silent movies 60 years ago.

VARIETY:

Pixar stalwart Andrew Stanton's first directorial outing since "Finding Nemo" walks a fine line between the rarefied and the immediately accessible as it explores new territory for animation, yet remains sufficiently crowd-pleasing to indicate celestial B.O. for this G-rated summer offering.

I had thought that with a marketing blitzkrieg unlike any thing I'd seen from Pixar so far, combined with a sci-fi theme to get single males in earlier (as evidenced by the BOM polls) and a cute factor to get roughly the same Nemo audience, beating Nemo / Incredibles would be a lock. Maybe personal bias too though since I hoped Incredibles would beat Nemo. I'm still a bit mystified at Nemo's numbers. Same summer as Pirates 1 no less. (What was it about that summer that made so many yearn for the sea?)

But then *Aaack*! Fantasy Moguls tracking shows sub-$60M!!! I guess I sort of failed to notice the momentum that Wanted has been building. I still think it possible that it can be the top Pixar opening, though I'm not too confident anymore. I will be pretty shocked if this opening fails to beat Kung Fu Panda.

FM's projections are a joke. For KFP he ran a article on wed saying it has a chance to beat FN and TI and then on thu "predicted" that it will gross mid to late 40s. I am reasonable confident wall-e will beat MTC projections.

I know Mason's not that great at calling openers, but he's close enough usually that when it's that far off it gives me pause. He can get pretty carried away - Semi-Pro is the ultimate example - and he's only slightly more likely be under than over.

Still, I refuse to believe that this won't beat Cars!

final prediction - 73.3 / 310 (after Ratatouille's sorta-weak response with kids, I can't see Wall-E having any weaker of a multiplier, despite a larger opening)

I am pretty sure it will pass $300 in the US, but I also think it's gonna clear $520 overseas (it's even more appealing to the international audience than last year's Ratatouille, more in line with Nemo, but since they almost don't talk here, it will break through all the cultural borders, so maybe even $550+). Kinda reminds me Charlie Chaplin...
