Hero is pretty underrated (the Hoffman one)

Though I haven't seen it in ages

80. Sleepy Hollow (1999)

Image

I love Burton and I love Depp, and combined they are wonderful. (Ok, so they weren't in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but I can forgive them that.) Again, I know this is a less than popular choice, but I love period movies, and the absurdity of this one is great.

79. Catch Me If You Can (2002)

Image

I was in Israel when this was released and missed it in theaters and had everyone telling me how wonderful it was for months waiting for it to come out on DVD. And it was. I love movies where you get to see how smart the characters are and how they pull things off.

78. Being John Malkovich (1999)

Image

I like weird movies, even when they are weird just for the sake of being weird, which this one totally is. But all I needed was the scene where John Cusack is in the interview and is asked which letter comes first, and one of the "letters" held up is a squiggly line, and I was totally in love with it.

77. High Fidelity (2000)

Image

Another John Cusack movie. This is my favorite Nick Hornby adaptation, though I have not seen the Colin Firth Fever Pitch. I do love About a Boy, too, but the book is sooooo much better in that case, that I just can't love the movie as much. With High Fidelity, I liked the movie better.

76. Clueless (1995)

Image

A movie I can still recite word for word. Completely brilliant in its inanity. I don't really like most of Heckerling's work, but this is her one stroke of genius. Still stands up even when I'm 12 years older.

75. Bachelor Mother (1939)

Image

I think this was one of the first classics that I ever really liked, as far as I can remember. It was one that had sat in the back of my mind for years until I finally one day asked my mom if I had made it up, but she remembered it, too. Then we spent like 2 years trying to figure out what the movie was. This is also one of those movies that was remade in color a few years down the line, but I like the original much better. Could be my love for David Nivens.

74. Gigi (1958)

Image

I mostly love this for Maurice Chevalier. Leslie Caron I'm not a fan of and I think this would have been much better with Audrey Hepburn (who was in a stage version, and who they are obviously trying to make Caron look like). But despite that, it's a great musical.

73. The Spanish Prisoner (1997)

Image

Another twisty movie. This one pulled it off so well that I had no idea what was coming. Pure brilliance.

72. Love, Actually (2003)

Image

Most movies that have three hundred different plot lines I'm not a fan of, and this one took a few viewings to really appreciate. But by now I love it. All the various plots work very well together and there's really only one that I'm not a fan of. (Keira Knightley's because it seemed rather pointless.) (Oh, wait, there's Laura Linney's, too.)

71. Sneakers (1992)

Image

Yet another twist! This movie was my first introduction to hackers, and I've found them extremely cool ever since.

I know, entirely too low.

That smilie stands for when I like a movie, find it enjoyable or entertaining, but it doesn't belong anywhere near my top 100 list.

Nice batch there... Love Actually, High Fidelity, Being John Malkovich are all probably in my top 50, CMIYC possibly top 100.

The Awful Truth, Jujubee? Amazing! Also, kudos for acknowledging the brilliant Sneakers.

Night at the Opera is classic too, although I think there's three or four Marx pictures I prefer.

70. You've Got Mail (1998)

Image

I'm actually having second thoughts about putting this up this high, but it's too late. This is a movie I really loved for a long time, and it was in the hey day of AOL, so it was very cool on top of everything else. Yes, it's 95% build up, 5% resolution, but this is a remake from a 40s movie, and movies back then were ALL 95% build up, 5% resolution. So it worked.

69. Honeymoon in Vegas (1992)

Image

Another really fun movie. One of my favorite Nic Cage movies.

68. Beetlejuice (1988)

Image

This was a big movie in my house when I was a kid. I remember actually finding it scary once upon a time, but now I just love it. I also totally thought Winona Ryder was the coolest person ever for a long while.

67. Empire Records (1995)

Image

One of the most quotable movies ever. "What's with today today?" "Who knows where thoughts come from? They just appear." Also, I was totally in love with Ethan Embry for a while there, and he was so adorable here. Along with good music and the whole DAMN THE MAN theme, it's a great movie, despite Liv Tyler.

66. Borat (2006)

Image

I'm in the group that found this to be a completely brilliant, hilarious comedy. As much as it was a lot of potty humor, there was so much else that was just really smart. Loved it.

65. Big (1988)

Image

Another holdover from my childhood. It's been a while since I've seen it, so I could have a different opinion now, but this is a classic and will probably always remain so. And it was back when Tom Hanks was funny.

64. Sabrina (1954)

Image

I love this movie. I love the whole Northeast aristocracy thing. I love Audrey Hepburn. I love Humphrey Bogart. It's just all great. Except Hepburn's hair. I liked it better at the beginning of the movie before she cut it.

63. My Fair Lady (1964)

Image

Another great Audrey Hepburn movie. In this one, it's the clothes that sells it for me. Absolutely love the dresses. I didn't really like how the movie turned Eliza Doolittle/Henry Higgins into this great love or whatever, but I can forgive it, because it's more fun to watch the great clothes than to read Pygmalion. Also, the songs are great.

62. To Be or Not to Be (1983)

Image

I think this was my first introduction to Mel Brooks, and I for a while (when I was very young, it came out the year I was born) I had it mixed up with the Producers. But I like this one so much more than the Producers. So much.

61. The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)

Image

This is another one of those movies that's weird/artsy for the sake of it, but I love it anyway. All except Luke Wilson, actually. Can't stand him.

Yes I put it in just for you. Also because I was trying to pick an Irene Dunne movie and decided this is the only one that I think would really qualify.

60. All About Eve (1950)

Image

Anne Baxter plays this part so wonderfully that you can't even figure out why you hate her so much until very close to the end. But as wonderful as Anne Baxter is, Bette Davis is better. And in looking at the Wiki, I see that Claudette Colbert was originally supposed to play Margo Channing. I can't imagine her giving anywhere near the performance Bette Davis did.

59. Bowfinger (1999)

Image

This was the first great comedy of Steve Martin's in around a decade. (I highly enjoyed St. Bilko, but can't count it was great.) Completely hilarious, and it even let Eddie Murphy play multiple roles, since we all know he's not capable of just playing one. I even liked Heather Graham!

58. Stranger Than Fiction (2006)

Image

Maybe it's just the complete departure from the norm here, but I really liked this. (Though I was a bit less than thrilled with Gyllenhaal's character, but she didn't kill it.) Will Farrell was just wonderful. While I like Will Farrell's movies normally, I am not the biggest fan. Good for a laugh, but that's about it. But this one... I just loved it.

57. Toy Story (1995)

Image

Best Pixar movie ever. (At least until Wall-E ;))

56. Shop Around the Corner (1940)

Image

The original movie that was remade into You've Got Mail. This one is so much better. Also much much better than the musical remake with Judy Garland that was set in like 1905 or so. That one was just bad. But this one is good.

55. Everyone Says I Love You (1996)

Image

This is by far my favorite Woody Allen movie. I don't think most Allen fans like it much, but I thought it was wonderful. Great songs, funny, beautiful scenery.

54. History of the World Part 1 (1981)

Image

I first saw this when I was 11 or so, and couldn't figure out why there wasn't a part 2. This is another extremely funny movie, though the greek part was of course best.

53. Bowling for Columbine (2002)

Image

This is a movie that has me in tears through the majority of it. Sobbing tears. I know Moore isn't the most straightforward guy, and his bias gets in the way of things a lot of the time, but he just tells a story so damn well that you don't even care.

52. Victor/Victoria (1982)

Image

As a child I only knew Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins and Fräulein Maria, so the first time I saw this I was completely shocked. But it's funny and good and I love it.

51. Pan's Labyrinth (2006)

Image

Wait a minute. I forgot how much I hated the ending here. Hmm. I would move it, except it's so wonderful looking that I just can't.

Top 50 time!

50. Sleepless in Seattle (1993)

Image

This is such a sweet movie. Probably a bit high on my list, but it's from a time before Meg Ryan cut her hair, which I will always fondly remember, no matter how horrible said hair was.

49. Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994)

Image

This is my favorite Hugh Grant movie. It's from when he was still the bumbling, stuttering Brit, which was just so charming, though the suave thing works, too. But just a bigger fan of this persona.

48. Joe vs the Volcano (1990)

Image

I admit it, I like Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks. This one is, of course, far funnier than the previous two, because it's pre-1992 Hanks.

47. The Sound of Music (1965)

Image

I first saw this in the mid-80s on TV (looking at the Wiki, it must have been on NBC). We taped it then and that heavily edited version was the only one I saw, probably until we got it on DVD sometime in the last decade. The first time I saw it uncut I was completely shocked. I can't believe the things they got away with cutting! Anyway, love this one.

46. Toys (1992)

Image

I'm sure this is a total disaster of a film, but it's a holdover from childhood, and I loved this then. (Note: For the thread discussing films nominated for Razzies and Oscars, this is apparently one of them!) But it just looks like so much fun!

45. Ed Wood (1994)

Image

Burton and Depp again! Wonderful performances by pretty much everyone. And the film was shot so perfectly.

44. An Inconvenient Truth (2006) (Hmm. Is every movie I watched in 2006 on this list? Very possible.)

Image

Whatever you think of the politics/science presented here, you have to admit how great it's presented. Al Gore proved just how non-robotic he really is, and the message is given in such a captivating manner, that you forget it's really really boring stuff.

43. The Princess Bride (1987)

Image

This is one of those movies where it seems like I always had in my subconscious. I can't remember the first time I saw it, which means it was probably when I was under 4. It was a movie that I would actually think about every once in a while when I was little, but had no idea what movie I was thinking about, and I have vague recollections of thinking it was pretty much a completely different movie than it actually is. So many reasons to love this, but the best reason, of course, is ROUSes.

Also, the book. So, I read the 25th Anniversary edition, (or was it the 30th?) and I had never heard anything about the unabridged version or anything and I was totally sucked in and got completely indignant about Goldman not being able to write the sequel and blah blah blah. Yeah. I'm an idiot. But in my defense, I read it in Israel when I had very limited internet access and couldn't immediately go look it up.

42. Galaxy Quest (1999)

Image

This is by far the best Tim Allen movie. (Ok, that's not saying a whole lot, but, hey, he was in Toy Story.) Great cast. Great lines. Perfect caricature of Trekkies.

41. Grosse Pointe Blank (1997)

Image

Sigh. John Cusack with a gun. Totally glamorized the hitman profession, which I was totally cool with. Also really great music. This movie was, sadly, my first introduction to Violent Femmes, for which I am eternally grateful.

Bowfinger, Grosse Pointe Blank, Shop Around the Corner (yes!) and Everyone Says I Love You (double yes! wonderful film) are all great choices.

But I also must say "bad jujubee!" Watch the original To Be or Not to Be, not the remake. Carole Lombard! Jack Benny! Ernst Lubitsch!

40. Knocked Up (2007)

Image

As "sexist" as this movie may be (and I'm of the opinion that those who think that just lack a sense of humor), I find this hilarious. Of course, the best scenes are the ones with Paul Rudd :wub2: and Seth Rogen.

39. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)

Image

I think this was the first subtitled film that I really enjoyed. Of course, I hated the ending, but I probably hate the ending in all Asian movies. I know, I know, BUT SHE CAN FLY! Still. Ugh.

38. Groundhog Day (1993)

Image

This took me a few years to really appreciate, which is probably ok, since it came out when I was 9. But now I love it for its wonderful comedy and the whole feel-good factor. (Also, I notice I actually have more than one Andie MacDowell film on my top 100. Weird since I'm not really a fan of hers.)

37. When Harry Met Sally (1989)

Image

I first saw this when I was about 13 or so and my step sister told me this is a movie that every girl must watch once a year. While I don't stick to that schedule, I agree. It's funny, fun, pre-haircut Ryan, and has format I really enjoy.

36. Gattaca (1997)

Image

Dude! Love this movie. The whole science aspect was always enthralling to me, as well as the whole way you get around the science aspect. Plus, Ethan Hawke is hot. Why did Uma Thurman leave him?

Meh, my stomach hurts. Just five tonight.

I'm liking everything else though. Big fan of the inclusions of Bowfinger and Groundhog Day. Nice diverse list so far.

He cheated on her I think. I'm just a fountain of useless information. Gattaca is a great film though. Hated it the first time I saw it, now I think it's great.
