 Videodrome
Videodrome Quote: Videodrome is a 1983 Canadian science fiction body horror film written and directed by David Cronenberg, starring James Woods, Sonja Smits, and singer Deborah Harry. Set in Toronto during the early 80s, it follows the CEO of a small cable station who stumbles upon a broadcast signal featuring extreme violence and torture. The layers of deception and mind-control conspiracy unfold as he uncovers the signal's source and loses touch with reality in a series of increasingly bizarre and violent organic hallucinations. The film has been described as "techno-surrealist".

 Re: Videodrome
I feel no shame in saying this film is seriously fucked up!!
Did I get it? Hell if I know, but it was oddly engrossing and I'd gladly watch it again. This thing would be terrifying under the influence though.

 Re: Videodrome
I don't think I understand any of what the film was going for, but I'd be lying if I said it didn't affect me. The visuals are frightening and powerful and oh so cool, and really make the film. I really dug that you couldn't, at any one time, decide what was real and what was a hallucination. And it runs throughout the entire film, there's no third act twist where everything is revealed to be a dream. Though its bleak and somewhat unsatisfactory ending made the logical side of me cringe, the artistic side of me loved the brash social commentary that it was going for (at least, I think that's what it was). I'd watch this film again just for the visuals.

 Re: Videodrome
This movie is crazzzzzzzy, heh. I thought it was pretty excellent though. Really the definition of a mind trip, it makes me question the stability of that thing in my skull and underneath it there's a pretty good criticism of media dominance as well. It's also superbly crafted, shot, and acted, Croenenberg is the master pulling the strings here.
I also thought it had one of the best gruesome deaths I've seen in a movie(you'll know which one). It kind of felt like the Raiders of the Lost Ark face peel moment taken much much MUCH farther. In fact, most of the blood here is pretty awesome and sick in a good way.
I felt that as a whole though the last 30 minutes went a bit over the edge, I appreciate Croenenberg's balls, but I was really digging the mystery and slowly going crazy feeling of the rest of the movie, it was almost subtle for a while.
It's quite a film overall.
4/5

I disagree pretty strongly here. While there's not a "twist" per se, there is definitive point [probably when the gun reemerges until the introduction of the "new flesh"], when the film takes a turn from what is one of the smartest, most intriguing sci-fi films I've seen, into something that resembles a sci-fi channel original movie. I absolutely love the first hour here, but the last 30 minutes aren't so much a mess as they are just flat out bad. Okay, so yes, I am definitely biased against anything resembling an action film, but it's just such a let down! The first hour effectively walks the line between intellectual social commentary and trippy techno-thriller, but the final act just screams out "fuck it and fuck this film! gore! violence! haha!" I understand that that's clearly a large point of commentary itself, but meh, I didn't see that reasoning as anymore than Cronenberg's cop-out to justify what is really a lowbrow third act. Complaints aside, the first hour was really, really good. Like I said before, up there with the best sci-fi stuff I've seen.

 Re: Videodrome
The sex scene with James Woods and Debbie Harry where he like, pierces her ear and shit, does hold the distinction of being one of the ickiest ever.

 Re: Videodrome
Hmm....six posts in. I see trixster's already made it a point to jack off Cronenberg. Mmm-hmm.
But where's his partner in crime makeshift?

But where's his partner in crime makeshift? You're such a hater. Go jerk off to your Vanessa Hudgens nude pics again.

 Re: Videodrome
Now he's cute, and talented to boot.
In other HSM cast news, I much preferred The Tis's old nose. It had character.
