Another great film from Tom Hanks...

39. Apollo 13

Houston, we have a problem!

This film is just so tense and suspenseful but sort of fun as well and serious as well. It is like a wierd mix of serious drama, an suspenseful thriller and a adventurous journey.

With Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxton and Gary Sinise you get one amazing cast who are really good together. The movie is very tense with that music especially in the end so you are always on the edge of your seat. The film gets serious with the drama because if you don't know the history you think one of them was going to die. The movie is sort of adventurous in the starting but it slowly goes in to becoming a serious suspenseful drama.

I like how the film changes so easily and it is something i wished was done more in film. It is a great film that people from all genres will love. Tech guys will love all the technical stuff while everyone else will griped by the tension of the film.

Easily a 90's gem...

Unforgiven is one of the more overrated movies I've ever seen, along with Million Dollar Baby. Seems I don't like Eastwood directed movies that much. But Mystic River was pretty good.

Post Re: KJ User's Top 100 Lists Vol.2 - Mannyisthebest
yes there is a nostalgia factor of Clint Eastwood being in a Western...
So it may be somewhat overrated.

Next is a great film with two good looking people...

38. A streetcar Named Desire

Image

Come on with these two, how can you go wrong!!

Image

Image

These two easily pull of some of the greatest acting I have ever seen. They took a pretty average story and made into a must see classic. Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh are just amazing!
Brando is just cool as usual but my goodness Vivien Leigh is just spectacular at her role.

The subject matter of this film was way way ahead of its time and it was censored a lot because the original play had homosexual content and its still in the film somewhat.

The movie is powerful and you thought he could not have done that to her.... Its sad and tragic and amazing at the same time.

"STELLA!!!"!!

ooo I love A Streetcar Named Desire

Though I don't know how "sad" it is. Unless you're using it in the pathetic sense for Leigh's character.

i have just noticed that i have been doing this list for a month now!!

37. Monty Python And The Holy Grail
Image

A strange film which some find to be pure genius while others find it to be stupid in every way possible.

I find it to be one of the most funniest films ever made...

Image
Quote:
French Guy: Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!"

What the f*(* does that mean!! :funny:

So random!!!

The amount of great jokes in this film are just to numerous to talk about. You can go from the man with the three questions to the killer rabbit to the knights who say NEE!! to the Shreberry to Sir Lancelot crashing a wedding to their being a prince in trouble to the knight who fights King Arthur with no arms or legs and you have finally Merlin who was just plain wierd.

Easily one of the best films made from Britain this film may get boring quite fast in between the now Legendary jokes but when you watch the film you get remineded of a great joke you forgot about because they are just so many in this film.

However some people find this film to be one of the worst movie ever. When we played this movie
in school, 4 people went sleep, 3 laughed once or twice, 6 were having lots of fun and and 4 people could not stop laughing.

I was caught up by the randomness of the film, and some scenes were just so halrious especially that killer rabbit and that French Guy. When he started throwing ducks and cows at King Arthur, I Literally fell off my chair in class laughing. Also the Holy Hand Grenade and that old guy from scene 24 when he asks the "airspeed velocity" of an unladen swallow, and in the starting of the film King Arthur was talking about that. :funny:

It is sheer genius this film, genius...

This film has had a massive cultural impact on a lot of comedies and especially video games, I have heard so many references from this film in so many video games.

"Run Away!!! Run Away"!!

Now a film that makes Henry Fonda fans go WTF??

Henry Fonda is the bad guy???  :zonks:

45. Once Upon a Time in the West

The good the bad and the ugly is respected and is seen as the best western film, but this one is forgotten.

The problem is the first time you watch, you can't get over the fact Henry Fonda is a villain. Like Henry Fonda is like Mr. Good guy Honesty!! 12 angry men, Grapes of Wrath come on! :funny:

Henry Fonda freaks you out. Its not that he does anything a villain typically does do, but you have this image of Henry Fonda and would not expect him to act like such.

The films also features Bronson in its best role and this film shows why Sergio Leone is the king of westerns no contest! The film has that epic, massive scale and the music is chilling and exciting.

This film is just so manly really like the Good, The bad and the Ugly, and its a film that one can still enjoy today. The problem is that it is slow in pace but it always leads to a build up to a great scene.

Films like this, The Searchers, The Good the bad and The Ugly and the seven samurai have had a tremendous influence on Cinema...

Image

About 43 places too low.

I wish more people would see this movie. It's really the best western I have ever seen. Everything and everyone is perfect in this.
You are right, Manny, the pacing may seem slow by todays standard, but here I don't equal it with boring, it just makes you more anxious to see the climax.
The opening scene at the train station is a great example. And remember, there was no CGI back then, so have that in mind in the scene with the fly.

i shall re-watch.

I could not get over Henry Fonda being a bad guy after watching his other films...

36. Saving Private Ryan

Image

One of the best war movies ever with one of the best scenes ever filmed. No film has started with a louder bang then this film.

A modern gem created by Steven Spielberg, this a film which imo has its dramatic climax in the start of the film. The rest of the film is just a regular old WW2 film we have seen a million times. That imo was a great flaw in this film and why to me it got a bit boring by the end. However, you have have many battle scenes and such throughout which are really good.

The film is educational, serious, sad, scary, horrifying and entertaining all at the same time.

Post Re: KJ User's Top 100 Lists Vol.2 - Mannyisthebest
My next two choices are some deeply thought out choices..

35. Spartacus

Image
A Stanley Kubrick film...

It is a Roman epic and Roman epic are usually over dramatic, and quite stupid most of the times..

However this one was different. It had all of the stuff a typical Roman Epic had, but this one had a much darker tone and you can clearly see where Stanley Kubrick directed the film. The film had a very dark and sad ending which usually these films don't have.

Kirk Douglas does his role as a big rebellious slave well but its nothing special...
Jean Simmons is just blah...
Laurence Olivier is actually why this film is any good. He is really really good at his role and he elevates the film drastically with his appearance and his performance.
Charles Laughton is okay.
Peter Ustinov is a treat but why did he win a Oscar??

The great part of the film is that this film is not really a big celebration of Roman might as it shows a much darker side of Rome and its battles are different as well. Rather then being a show piece for the hero to kill a whole army, you see the great slaughter of the slaves which at that time was very gruesome. Actually the scene after the battle where all the dead people were all across the battle scene was clearly a Kubrick creation. It was very gruesome, dark and disturbing and it really separated this film from the other huge Ancient Epics from that time. The battle scene was amazing as the thousands of people were all real and that whats cool about this film.

The ending is very tragic as well with all of the prisoners were crucified and that was quite dark. It was very dark film, and even when Kirk Douglas was being a big hero you still felt this dark undertone. The film's scenery is dark and really the whole 2nd half of the film is just a big tragedy.

The film however has some really stupid scenes which clearly show the many faults of all of the films. However the action is all great and the gladiator fight scenes are great. However the film is way to long, however I like Ancient Historical films and imo this one was the best one made in the 50's era and 60's era

However the best scene is when Lawrence Olivier hinted his homosexual tendencies to his salve with a Oyster's metaphor. I was like woh.... :noway: You see what i mean how he just brings so much sophistication to his films... actually his name alone gives one an image of a sophisticated, cultured man.

Also the "I'm Spartacus scene is just great really.

notice how for the films I find entertaining i have a short entry...

while for films that I find to be critically good I have long entries...

34. Gattaca
Image

IMO its a modern classic.

Its a sci-fi film about the future that has a really cool and classy feel to it. Batman Begins is like this as well...

This film is just amazing at how it looks and feels. It is very cool and classy yet is a science fiction film about the future.

This film raises a lot of great questions about the future of genetics and human engineering and this film has really effected that whole issue a lot is now seen as must see film to understand this topic.

The film is brilliant through its story. It is a classic and typical tale of the human spirit overpowering over everything but it does this in a great way which in the end makes you almost cry. Ethan Hawke is great in his role and does some really nice acting. Uma Thurman brings a more classy feel to this film and Jude Law is really sort of the comic relief in my opinion.

This film is really underrated and is easily a gem of the 1990's. I hope its one of those films maybe 10 years latter we will finally appreciate properly. Just look at Vertigo, its more popular today then it ever was... However Vertigo is much better... :shades:

My choice to have Spartacus and Gattaca on this list was not only because they were pretty good films but because of the deeper issues they look at. How Spartacus really changed historical epics and how Gattaca is so underrated yet covers a topic that will be important for our future.

whats wrong with me I ranked Sunset BLvd at #57!!, Whoops!

Now the classics really dominate the list now, however Hitchcock lovers should wait a bit longer... However Humphrey Bogart and Jimmy Stewart and Martin Scorsese fans should be excited.

A film that must be included for the sake that it must be included...

33. Singing In the Rain

Image
Not the official poster, but is what we remember the film for.

Now this film is so good, so good, so good!!!!....

an Alfred Hitchcock film even payed homage to this film (North by Northwest)....

what else needs to be said!!!

the main songs is a classic and really even i hum it in the rain. The film has many great songs and is a rare musical I enjoy. However outside of the songs the film has some slow sections and its story is not that good, but the songs the songs!!

I had to do it, i had to include an Audrey Hepburn Film :funny:

32. Roman Holiday

Image

why this film is great, its because of this person...
Image

Easily one of the most beautiful actresses to grace the screen she was good looking but smart and she is like a Fashion god really...

The film itself is very smart and funny and enjoyable. Gregory Peck is fun and good in his role however I still can't get over the stern, solid strong man role he gave in To Kill a Mockingbird...

Audrey is smart, enjoyable, and mesmerizing and for her first major film she was spectatcular. She won the academy award...

Breakfast at Tiffany's is imo what Audrey Hepburn is known for and she looks even better in that film, but i was bothered by the racist portrayal of the Chinese man in that film...

Marlon Brando at his best of his many many bests!! :funny: :funny: Now the real classics are rolling!!!

32. On the Waterfront

Image

Quote:
You don’t understand. I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am, let’s face it. It was you, Charley.

Certain Quotes, Scenes and certain characters make films timeless and classics. This film had all of the above and more.

The great scene is when the great quote was said and Marlon Brando was beyond Oscar worthy in this performance. He was cool... :funny:

Apart from Marlon Brando you have Lee J. Cobb, and Eva Marie Saint who also won a Oscar for this film. Both support Marlon Brando in the film and make him seem even better and make the film more then being a one man show.

Its like the best original mob film and it focuses on certain deep issues so it is a deep and critical film as well. Come on its a great film....

There is usually a fight between people if this film or Streetcar named Desire is better.

I actually find Waterfront to be just a little overrated... I still give it around B+, but for the most part it's a solid drama boosted by a great performance.

i find the quote and that scene to be the real only masterful part of the film and what the film is known for.

However so many films are well loved and well liked for only a few great lines or scenes.

Also when i rate classic films and you guys mostly do it too, I judge them much more critically and harshly.

I give any good film today an A- or B+ just because I was laughing my ass off...

However when it comes to classic films a A is like Godfather material and B+, is a solid classic.

SO i have like two rating systems...

I give Waterfront a borderline B+, A-.

Like TF is A- material entertainment wise, but critically its a C at best. Now I see why critics can give such popular films such low praise..

now I give you my last Hindi film...

30. Sholay

Image

Cultural equivalent in Hollywood: Star Wars

Its like Star wars and Godfather of Indian Cinema but its nothing at all like those two films.

A film from 1975 it grossed back then in 1975 which today in India would be seen as super blockbuster. Meaning it grossed such a large amount when tickets were sooo much cheaper, that today that gross would be seen as a super blockbuster in India. It was a huge flop at first but it had massive WOM grossed 60 million dollars in 1975 when tickets were like pennies!! It was a sensation where people would speak the dialogues with the film. The movie ran in theaters for like 5 years straight with packed shows even 5 years latter. Actually no one knows the true real gross of the film.

It starts the two greatest actors and one the greatest actresses in Bollywood, so acting was just superb. However the villain in this film is legendary and even today he is feared and well respected. Sort of like Darth Vader, but he looks and acts nothing like him.

This film has had a massive effect on India and its film making industry. It was epic like a Western, as funny as a comedy, adventurous as Star Wars and as sad a as a Shakespearean tragedy. This let it appeal to hundreds of millions of people and why even 30 years latter this film is still so respected and revered not only by the old but by even the young. Its the highest grossing inflation adjusted film ever in Bollywood and its a great film.

With so many great scenes it would take pages to describe them well in English and its quite creative as well. The music was amazing and the scenery seemed so much like a Western. It has references to Hollywood's Charlie Chaplain and Clint Eastwood and to Siergo Leone films. It also references Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Seven Samaria and The Searchers.

This film is amazing and its great no question!! The dialogues is just spectatcular and even very few Hollywood classics come close to in that regard.

now the list includes more films that are not fun, but are very critical///

29. To Kill a Mockingbird

Image

This film is really a one man show. Gregory Peck gives an all time performance in this film.

Image

This film is boring at times when Peck is not on screen but when he is you always feel he is great and powerful and is so good. He was a hero in this film at its truest sense. A man standing up for his ideals...

This film is very powerful especially the ending and when Robert Duvall came out of nowhere as Boo Radley surprised me. I always had this image Boo Radley was this deformed monster... :funny:

If you love the book you will enjoy the film. Easily a great adaptation of a book.

Disturbing, stressful, surprising and depressing...

Thats what this film is...

Kubrick was going to have a Hollywood ending but Kirk Douglas suggested the film would be better if he did not. It was a great decision as you could not believe the actually shot those people.

sorry for the delay, a classic from Alec Guinness. Yes he was more then Obi-wan Kenobi!!

27. The Bridge On The River Kwai
Image

Um.....

from 1957 and a POW WW2 film. You think its way outdated, but it is not and the film is actually rather entertaining and serious at the same time.

The film is memorable with the theme music and the bridge ending finale is just amazing. Its all 100% real and it looks amazing even today.

Alec Guinness brings out his best in this role as he really portrays his character very well.

William Holden and is whole 2nd side adventure almost ruin the film and that whole pointless love affair with the native girl. That is like a whole genre of cinema in itself. Films about white guys falling in love with the natives...

Anyways the film is a classic like The Great Escape but much more serious however the Great Escape was dark in the ending nonetheless.

Henry Fonda appears on this list.... again...

No its not 12 angry men...

26. The Grapes of Wrath

Image

The (not a) Classic tale of depression Era America.

Henry Fonda is in a epic tale about a family in the depression times heading west to California. they Hit hard times and we see in detail and with great drama of what these people faced.

With great mannered (apart from over acting) dramatic acting from everyone and Henry Fonda pulls off an iconic performance and really started to solidify his image as Mr. Righteous as he now known by everyone.

Well you here the term film noir and this is the film that really is what that is all about. It really created that whole genre that produced great films like Sunset Blvd and Chinatown.

Quote:
The stuff that dreams are made of...

24. The Maltese Falcon

The name of the film is just so cool and unique in that it should be on everyones list... :funny:

Bogart is amazing and he is really cool and classy but not Casablanca classy....
Its a all time favourite of Roger Ebert and it is one of mine.

Its the film that kind of film about a great mystery adventure story with a sexy actress in the middle and a crazy smart bad guy and everyone is smoking and everything is dark and grey and gloomy. If this sounds familiar, this is the film that started it all.

The film has some real continuity issues and flaws but it is really well made and really well acted out.

now a film about a crazy American, commie hating, Nazi hunting legend....

23. Patton
Image

I find this film to be a laughing riot.

With him firing a pistol at a fighter plane, to him ordering for a weather prayer for greater destruction, to him calling the soviets and Nazi's Sons of bitches every 2-3 mins, to the funny portrayal of British General Montgomery and the random swearing and the "I just don't give a damn" portrayal of General General George S. Patton by George C. Scott.

The opening pep talk sequence is well respected and is seen as a an iconic moment in cinema but its not my favourite part of the film. The film is epic with large battles and amazing authentic sets. You travel Europe and Africa and go on a long journey through this mans life.

The General is shown to be a crazy cold hearted man but smart and daring as well. His antics keep you laughing and the parts where he goes to far (when he slaps a soldier) provide great drama.

Its a perfect Bio-pic with humour, action and drama and its how a proper war film show be made.

A very depressing film from Spielberg and is easily a classic already.

It is a very sad film about perhaps the worst moments in history...

This film is sad, depressing but inspiring as well. Ralph Fines and Liam Nesson are excellent as the villain and the hero. Actually Fines scares me in this film and his character is the worse human being possible. Not a dumb barbaric tyrant, but a smart educated tyrant.
