Anyone seen the British miniseries with Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie, based on John le Carré's novel?

I am on episode 3 and it is absolutely fantastic. Hugh Laurie is exceptional as the villain.

David is going to love the living shit out of this.

I love the novel and the cast.

It airs on AMC in April stateside. I am excited to watch it.

Gonna watch the finale tonight. Very strong miniseries. Tom Hiddleston makes a good case for becoming the next Bond, Laurie is a fantastic villain and Debicki continues to impress. But the most impressive performer here is probably Tom Hollander. The whole series ia just all-around great.

The finale was good, but I guess very much as you would expect. Not many twists and turns towards the end, just a well-rounded finish. In a just world, Hiddleston, Laurie, Debicki and Colman all end up with Emmy noms this year.

I forgot to mention I watched this on AMC last week and while it was a bit confusing I liked what I saw. I'll keep watching for now.

Delicious first episode. It is immediately gripping and acted to perfection. This series is so up my alley. It nicely remains faithful to the novel, le Carré's first post-Cold War story, while also updating and remixing it (such as incorporating the Arab Spring).

This seems to be drawing minuscule ratings and having zero cultural impact in the U.S., which is a shame. It is incredibly well-produced and riveting.

Excellent miniseries. AMC ran a marathon last weekend and I watched roughly an episode a day. Fantastic all around. I'm really glad no one adapted this into a 140 minute movie, as this deserved all six hours.

I'm sure this will lose out to The People VS OJ Simpson or Fargo at the Emmys, but at least holding out hope for a win for Laurie or Colman.

I just watched the first episode. Wow, blew me away great, can't wait to continue.

I just finished this yesterday - solid stuff.

I finished this show last week and it's great. Laurie and Hiddleston feed well off each other.
I agree that the first episode is by far and away the best.
In later episodes some things turn out a bit to convenient here and there but it keeps up a good tension throughout. Adapting this into a mini-series was definitely a good decision as a film might not have done it justice.

I thought this was overhyped a bit. It takes way too much Bond stuff and never really goes better than some of the recent Bond offerings it desperately tries to beat.

Laurie is excellent though.

Mentioning Bond, I enjoyed myself more with this than with the last 3 Bond films.

Casino Royale & Skyfall are much better than this for me. Spectre is kind of the same, and I find this only better than Quantum of Solace. I wouldn't compare any other Bond movies though as only Craig ones fit tonally with the show and it's obvious it borrows from these movies the most.

Although I still don't really find it quite like Bond, the most striking similarity is Hiddleston's way with the ladies though, he does seem to be able to wind them around his finger like only Bond could.

I've just started episode one. I wasn't sure about this before because Hiddleston isn't my favourite actor in the world, but it's really well set up and I'm very eager to continue the next 5 hours of series 1. I actually think Hiddleston is great in this role.

Episode 2

Hmm. Not sure how I feel about this now. Hiddleston as a bad ass in Devon? Don't buy it. It's such a flimsy backstory. I don't see Hugh Laurie buying it either. And why not just let him go? He was at the restaurant, he saved your son, why keep him against his will? Why not just thank him, give him a reward, throw him a party, whatever, and be done with it. I don't get the big mystery and drama around it. I still like it and am intrigued by the show, but it's not gone how I hoped it would. I'm also not buying Laurie as an international arms dealing badass.

Olivia Colman is great, though I expected nothing less. Nice to see Neil Morrissey and Douglas Hodge (who I just watched in the final episode of Black Mirror).

Hmm I watched this sometime ago and while I honestly don't remember a whole lot about it I do remember enjoying it for the most part. Laurie was a great villain and Debicki was really solid aswell and absolutely gorgeous to look at it.

I don't know. I mean, Debicki is definitely not my type. I don't find her attractive in the slightest. But even Hugh Laurie as the villain. I find him and Tom Hollander so unconvincing as villains. I wouldn't be afraid of them at all. Though I do like some of Hollander's lines. I just find him lacking a fearful and commanding presence. Same for Laurie. They shouldn't have got a comedian to play that part.

Anyway, I'm only two episodes in so perhaps that will change.

Hugh Laurie's performance isn't "scary," to be sure, but I don't believe he is trying to be. The character is more a world-weary businessman, albeit one whose business is illegal. The violence of his world rubs uncomfortably against his air of aristocratic malaise. A typical John le Carré subversion of how we expect a villain in this type of story to act.

Watched up to episode 4. Two to go. I'm enjoying it. It's a decent show but nothing I'm jizzing over. It's no Homeland season 1.

I just have one episode to go now, and I really hope it has a semblance of a conclusion, because I'm not going to download series 2. I like the show, but I do not find it amazing. It's standard undercover plot stuff, so I'm left with the characters ... and I'm not blown away by them. I only have series 1 because a friend gave them to me. I also think this show loses something when binge watching it. It was designed to be watched one-a-week, and that is what people should do. Things move too quickly when you watch one after the other, and it hurts the integrity of act. All that being said (I know I'm quite negative about the show), I am looking forward to the climax.

All finished now. I think it's a very good series. The final episode is the best. But something is lacking. For one, they should have ramped up the fear for Roper in the preceding episodes, not just in the final one. Same goes for the acknowledgement of Jed as Pine's lover and partner. They should have had way more scenes of showing Roper's evil side. His domineering way. Show his command over people's lives.

Hope the second series is good. I thought it was already made for some reason, but learned today it hasn't been. I'll probably download it.

I really wonder what will happen in the second series. It cannot possibly continue with Roper. He's a goner. And the "night manager" angle will not make sense either. Will Pine just work as an international spy infiltrating arms dealers for Burr's (reinstated) intelligence team?
