Re: Late Night NBC discussion thread
I wonder if CBS has thought about giving Conan a call. Those Tonight Show numbers he was pulling in aren't looking so bad anymore. It might be a stretch to think he can get back to those numbers with Fallon in the mix, but I don't think he'd go lower than Colbert.
Conan's got it pretty cushy at TBS though. And CBS probably can't lure him back to New York.

Re: Late Night NBC discussion thread
He's under contract until the end of 2018 either way. I doubt he would want that gig anyway. He's already been through that drama. Colbert was doomed from the start. Fallon's social media really made it dominate. The only one outside of him that could compete would be Ellen. Which would be a huge and interesting as the first female "Big Late Night" show competition, but she's got probably the best job on TV. I know about Joan Rivers but that show was a disaster.

Re: Late Night NBC discussion thread
Yeah, Conan would be nuts to transition. He's got maybe a decade left, give or take. I doubt he'll be doing this well into his 60s. And I've went back to watching him regularly, and while he's definitely not the Conan of his prime days, he seems to be having a lot of fun on TBS.

Re: Late Night NBC discussion thread
It's safe to say The Late Show is disappointed today over being snubbed for Outstanding Variety Talk Series. To me, that was an easy nomination to secure, especially with Trevor Noah's Daily Show missing out as well, but The Late Late Show did get nominated. Can't help but wonder if CBS will eventually pull a Jimmy Fallon and give The Late Show to James Corden in the next year or two.

He can't be in "character" for the whole show but he should definitely bring back that fearlessness that his character had.
The Late Show may not get the ratings of Fallon but at the very least it should establish itself as the most respected late show out there next to Oliver's. MR X probably missed out. Because he's a PUNK!

Re: Late Night NBC discussion thread
Oh no, I watched. It was definitely one of, if not the best thing he's done so far on The Late Show, which is saying something. It just makes me miss the fact that The Colbert Report isn't on the air during this crazy election. And I don't think it was wise to remind us why we loved Colbert and why this Colbert is mediocre at best. Sorry Chip.
And everything else about Monday's show sucked. I don't care for the musical numbers. And the Hungry for Power Games at the RNC should have been awesome, except no one was there and he was "kicked out" which was obviously fake.

Re: Late Night NBC discussion thread
Larry Wilmore's show just got cancelled... Last episode this Thursday.
Kind of surprising - I always thought he as a host was pretty enjoyable. Their skits had gotten annoying lately though as they were very repetitive and obvious. I did enjoy that they tried to have a good panel segment (similar to Maher), but the format and panel members didn't typically work very well - not much good discussion.

Re: Late Night NBC discussion thread
Not when you look at his ratings. 1.7m to 776k in viewers. He was also down 65-70 percent across all the key demos and had almost no social media presence. Having Noah as a lead-in hasn't helped, but he's clearly not making enough money for Comedy Central. And his contract was up for renewal. Easy decision.
Comedy Central is also probably waiting to see how Noah does after the election. My guess is that he's gone around this time next year too.
I wonder how much CC regrets letting John Oliver (or even Samantha Bee) slip through their fingers?

Re: Late Night NBC discussion thread
I'm wondering will they replace Trevor Noah, should ratings not improve, or cancel The Daily Show altogether? Unlike The Tonight Show or any of those shows, perhaps that format just lived and died with Jon Stewart.

Re: Late Night NBC discussion thread
I'm not disputing that. But ratings are ratings. Lots of good talent has been screwed over by bad ratings.

Re: Late Night NBC discussion thread
Trevor Noah is just too "nice" for the position.
Any snarkiness feels forced coming from him.

Re: Late Night NBC discussion thread
I watched Colbert last night for the first time in a month (excluding his excellent interview last week with Springsteen). A lot of the same problems exist for me. I don't like the cartoon characters (Lincoln in the cold open). I don't like Jon Batiste's exaggerated laughing during Colbert's monologue. It's obnoxious and takes away any humor. And much of Colbert's delivery is very "Setup, setup, setup, punchline..." then a long, Krusty the Clown-esque smile.
I feel like he's going down with the ship and this is the show he wants to do. That's fine. But I don't see much effort to change.
