Worth noting that Tina Fey will be hosting for her fifth time. She become the first female cast member to reach that milestone.
To put that in Chippy terms, Tina Fey has been a cast member on SNL, worked on 30 Rock for seven seasons, hosted SNL five times, co-hosted the Golden Globes three times, starred in a number of big screen flicks, won numerous Emmys, and wrote a bestselling book... all while Kenan Thompson was a cast member on SNL.
Well I was directing more at your love of Kenan Thompson.
In all honesty, Kenan is very smart. He's a talented SNL performer, but I don't see his career going anywhere after the show. Like many talented stars before him (Dana Carvey, Chris Kattan, Darrell Hammond), sometimes you just can't parlay the success of the show into a successful post-show career. I mean, look at Dana Carvey. Easily one of the top five cast members of all time. He had characters, he had impressions, he had it all. But his own show lasted six episodes and his only true box office successes were Wayne's World 1 and 2.
Kenan is on track to be the longest-running cast member of all time. If he's there next season, he ties Darrell Hammonds' record. And Darrell ended up coming back to the show anyway. (Side note: he's not a great announcer. For someone who impersonated Pardo so many times, you would think he could be a better announcer.) But where does Kenan end up after this?
I don't he will go anyway after the show. He's one of the few who actually got a career before SNL, which then went nowhere, and it was SNL that revived it. Pre-SNL he proved that he wasn't up for a starring career in film, so I don't see a future for him anyway else than SNL. Where he's really excellent.
The McConaughey episode was pretty weak. The only standout was the Star Wars skit. It felt like maybe McConaughey had a lot of influence over what aired and what didn't, opting for weak sketches for anything with bite or edge. I at least expected a healthy dose of self-awareness about his meandering monologues from True Detective or his Lincoln ads. And the actual monologue about the origin of "Alright, alright, alright"? That was painful.

The Adele Thanksgiving sketch and the Star Wars one were pretty funny.
I cannot stand Colin Jost/Michael Che Update. I hate them both so much. They need to get rid of it because that segment of the show has become unbearable.

I really like Stallone. He and Arnold get compared a lot, but Arnold comes across like an overconfident, aloof musclehead (especially in his book), whereas Stallone is very well-composed and interesting. He's completely charming in that interview.
He will never be spoken of with the likes of Chevy Chase, Dennis Miller or Norm Macdonald, but he's not a complete abomination as he's been described. I still miss Cecily Strong, but she's better in more sketches.

Re: Late Night NBC discussion thread
Jost and Che were really, really shaky for the first season, but they've gotten a lot better since.
Monday's Late Late Show was the perfect show of guests. Rob Lowe and David Spade were so good in Corden's format and entertained the entire time. I got away from Corden since May, but I've watched a few times and really dig it. Too bad the ratings are low.
I'm PVRing Colbert and Corden on a regular basis. It's too bad they couldn't combine the shows. Colbert's strong suits are everything at the desk, which are just a slightly altered version of the same things he would do on The Colbert Report. His interview skills aren't that strong. I'll rarely watch them now unless it's someone I like. And I still admire their decision to have unusual guests (Joel Osteen for one), but I'm not sure that's going to win him more of an audience in the long term.
Meanwhile, Corden's interviews are a lot of fun, thanks to his continued style of combining two and three guests for one long sit-down. The monologue and desk bits leave so much to be desired. He tries too hard, yet still doesn't try hard enough if that makes sense. Colbert and Corden would do well combining their talents, but alas, that's impossible. I really want to see more from Colbert. So much of what he does is just satisfactory. And I hate to say it, but maybe he was better in 30-minute format. An hour is too much.
Umm... Colbert is the best interviewer on TV. Easily.

He is a good interviewer, but Charlie Rose still does it better than him. And the majority of his data is years old. Every non recent star all he does is do fun James Lipton/ whoever interviewed them. And he sucks at anyone recent. Corden is so much better than him and Seth.

This is true, but then I'm just so sick of Colbert's schtick.

The Key and Peele skit was great but overall I don't think making that Superbowl show about getting big names was a great way to get new fans for Colbert. Supergirl would've been such a nice post Superbowl show too. I mean shit it has Super in the title
