Well, we're a few weeks away from the September 14th start for the 13th edition of Survivor, but the 20 (ugh) castaways and new shake-ups to the game were revealed on The Early Show today. Here's an article from Zap2it.com: Quote: The 13th edition of "Survivor" will have the show's most diverse group of players to date, CBS says. At the start of the game, though, they won't be mingling all that much. After previous editions in which contestants were divided by gender or age, "Survivor: Cook Islands," which premieres Thursday, Sept. 14, will stick its hand firmly on a very hot button and set up its tribes along ethnic lines. The 20 players will initially be divided into four groups based on their ethnicity -- Hispanic, African-American, Asian-American and Caucasian. The tribes will merge at some point later in the game. The announcement was made on CBS' "Early Show" Wednesday morning, and anchor Harry Smith voiced what maybe you're thinking right now: Is this a good idea? "I think at first glance, when you just hear about it, it could sound like a stunt, especially with the way reality [TV] has gone," "Survivor" host Jeff Probst told Smith. "But that's not what we're doing here. The idea for this actually came from the criticism that 'Survivor' is not ethnically diverse enough. ... We said, 'Let's turn that criticism into creative for the show, and I think it fits in perfectly with what 'Survivor' does. It's a social experiment, and this adds another layer to the experiment." The new season will keep the "Exile Island" wrinkle from last spring's "Survivor: Panama," in which at least one person is separated from his or her teammates in each episode. The exiles will have a chance, though, to find a hidden immunity idol that they can use to save themselves at a Tribal Council session. The 20 players range in age from 23 to 45 and include a heavy-metal guitarist, a cop, a couple of showbiz types and an attorney. Here's a bit about each of them: Name: Rebecca Borman Age: 34 Hometown: Laurelton, N.Y. Occupation: Make-up artist Name: Anh-Tuan "Cao Boi" Bui Age: 42 Hometown: Christiansburg, Va. Occupation: Nail salon manager Name: Sekou Bunch Age: 45 Hometown: Los Angeles (originally from New York City) Occupation: Jazz musician Name: J.P. Calderon Age: 30 Hometown: Marina del Rey, Calif. Occupation: Pre-med student Credit: http://www.zap2it.com Umm... interesting, I suppose. But dividing groups into race? Really? I guess this will be the most diverse reality show season to-date. And, 20 castaways is FAR too much. Enough with that. 16 was too much, but 20 is ridiculous. |

Can't really tell much from their pictures, although the Rollergirl Artist woman brings back bad memories of Courtney. I predict I will hate Cao Boi based on his ridiculous name. |

Wonder if people will feel guilty later in the game for voting off someone just for not being on an original team, meaning they'd be racist (though not technically). |

They could've had a racially diverse cast without dividing them BY race. I think this little twist may turn viewers off. And what's with 12 (yes, 12) of the contestants being from California? I bet the casting director found most of them whilst barhopping one weekend in LA. I guess we traded location diversity for racial diversity. And age diversity as the oldest person is 45. Also I'm with Libs in that Jessica = Courtney from last year. |

It looks like they were deliberately trying to do something controversial to get attention. While the show is popular it isn't the main water cooler thing anymore, they want to be talked about. |

Archie Gates wrote: It looks like they were deliberately trying to do something controversial to get attention. While the show is popular it isn't the main water cooler thing anymore, they want to be talked about. If that's the plan, it's starting to work. Quote: The political backlash against the sorting of players on "Survivor" by race has begun. Members of the New York City Council's Black, Latino and Asian Caucus are calling on CBS, which airs the unscripted series, to dump "Survivor: Cook Islands," which is scheduled to premiere Thursday, Sept. 14. The show's 20 contestants will be divided by ethnicity -- African-American, Caucasian, Hispanic and Asian-American -- at the start of the game. "We are going to call on CBS to pull the plug on this," Robert Jackson, co-chair of the caucus, tells the New York Post. "Is this going to help to bring people together? I don't think so." John Liu, another caucus member, calls the plan "plain stupid." CBS announced its plans for the newest "Survivor" on Wednesday, and the reaction to the segregation has been largely negative -- even within the network. Harry Smith, who helped unveil the players on "The Early Show" that morning, told "Survivor" host Jeff Probst he was "dismayed" at the idea. The network, however, doesn't seem likely to pull "Survivor" from the airwaves. "CBS fully recognizes the controversial nature of this format but has full confidence in the producers and their ability to produce the program in a responsible manner," the network says in a statement. "'Survivor' is a program that is no stranger to controversy and has always answered its critics on the screen." |

Either from barhopping or surfing MySpace. Which apparently they did, according to Entertainment Weekly, lol. |

Haha, well that's an interesting twist. I don't think it'll be one of the asians that wins... and I don't think it'll be a black person... I'm gonna with the Filipinos here. |

Bump for premiere in about a week and a half. I'm undecided on whether I'm watching it. Not because of the racial thing, but because I was so bored by Survivor last season. The one-two boring punch of Guatemala and Exile Island was too much. And if Tom hadn't won Palau, it'd be a one-two-three-four punch of Vanuatu, Palau, Guatemala and Exile Island. ... come to think of it, All-Stars was a bit disappointing, even though I favor it over the past four seasons. Survivor hasn't been all that great since Pearl Islands. With the piratey Rupert, and the dastardly Jonny Fairplay. |

I don't even feel compelled whatsoever to watch this season. I hate that. I'll likely watch, but I wish I was really interested, especially by the new "twist" of dividing the castaways. Maybe I'm just so wrapped up in Big Brother: All-Stars. Perhaps the two days between the BB finale and the Survivor premiere will get me pumped for Cook Islands. |

Exile Island actually renewed my interest in the show. All-Stars, Vanuatu, Palau, Guatemala burnt me out with their suckage to the point where I wondered if we would ever get an above-average season again, but I loooved Exile Island so I have hope for this season as well. I'm especially happy to see such a diverse cast (though I'm not crazy about the dividing them by race twist), my main qualm is them casting 20 damn people again. Part of why I loved last year was that with only 16 people there was enough room for most characters to be fully fleshed out & developed. There were a token two or three "who" people as usual, but not as many as we get when there's 20 folks wandering around. I mean heck in Guatemala the actual winner of the season fell into the "who??" category. |

Twenty people is brutal. 16 is almost too much, but it's the original number since Season 1. Once they started adding more people, it turned me off a bit. |

I find the commercials insulting, I watch Survivor, but I won't watch this season, we all feel the need to represent, give me a fucking break. I am sure it will lead to talk, but racism is not a fun topic, do yout hink people want to watch reality try and create racial tension. I don't, I'll og get followed around the store if want to feel some racism today, I just need to drive three towns over for that. |
