What do you think are the most disgusting, assinine shows?

For me:

1. Family Guy (aka Simpsons Rip-off #1)
2. American Dad (aka Simpsons Rip-off #2)
3. Friends
4. Sex and the City

They had a show were the dog on Family Guy has sex with a dog who is in competition!

THAT'S A TOTAL FREAKIN' RIP-OFF! It's disgustingly shameless. Yes, The Simpsons was inspired by the Honeymooners and the Flintstones, but this is ridiculous.

If you want to get nitpicky, you can make the same comparisons to The Simpsons being a rip-off of The Flintstones. As for American Dad, the show is nothing like The Simpsons. The characters are fairly different (perhaps Stan is as thick-headed as Homer, and Francine as bland as Marge), and American Dad is more of a rip-off of Family Guy... but, they're made by the same people, so whatever. More or less, Peter and Stan are rip-offs of Homer. I just don't see that the shows are entirely rip-offs of The Simpsons, because they're not. There's nothing remotely similar between the two.

*Cues comment where someone says "Yeah, the difference is that Simpsons rocks and FG and AD suck!!!!1"*

So wait, what's the difference between "inspired" and "rip-off"? Doesn't seem to be much of a difference at all.

OMG Box, this is something we agree on. I thought I was the only person here who hated all 3 shows that you listed in your top 3. You have now become my ally. I totally agree that Family Guy totally rips off the Simpsons. At least South Park, Beavis & Butthead and Sponge Bob try to develop their own unique humor but Family Guy borrows way too much from pop culture. No comment on Sex and the City since most everyone here hates it

Ok, when one show did an episode about their dog having sex with a female dog while that female dog was racing, and another show copies that idea, that is not called 'being inspired by'; that's a rip-off.

The Simpsons is inspired by the Flintstones and The Honeymooners in some ways, but it doesn't copy them, unless it's for purposes of parody. There's a tremendous amount of originality in the case of The Simpsons, even in their parodying style. We've become used to it because the show has been around for so long. The Family Guy, on the other hand, merely takes elements from previous shows and vulgarizes them to an extreme. The people behind the show assume that obscenity and perverseness are tantamount to freshness and hipness. Unfortunately, The Simpsons has almost degenerated to that level in recent years (though it is still far more humane and sincere than either Family Guy or American Dad).

I wish they'd bring back Futurama. That show owns them all

Stan, in no way, is a rip off of Peter or Homer. No .. just no!

American Dad, is in no way, a rip off of Simpsons. Hell, i wouldn't even say its inspired from it. Outside of the fact that they are funny animated shows played during primetime focussed on a family, there is nothing similar.

Wait, when did the dog on The Simpsons have sex with a racing dog? I don't remember that.

Exactly. It's like saying two black people are twins, just because they have the same skin color.

But, I am curious about the dogs having the sex. I haven't watched the show regularily in a while, so I'm curious and aroused by it.

Remember the parody of the 101 Dalmatians? When they had 25 puppies? That one.

American Dad isn't a rip-off to the extent that Family Guy is. But it's just as vulgar, if not more so.

American Dad does go to the extreme quite a bit, but I find it funny. And... I guess Box finds me disgusting and asinine now. Heh.

And, was that a racing dog that Santa's Little Helper impregnated? It's been a while since I saw that episode.

I myself watch both shows  I'd only find you disgusting and assinine if you watched Sex and the City

Box .. here is what you dont understand and hence, label as a rip off. I remember which episode you're talking about. Let me be the first to tell you that that is not the only episode of Family Guy that shares the same premise as the Simpsons. There have been more. What makes the entire thing different is that not only the people who are making it are well aware of this, they also know that people who are watching it no about it too. Hell, they would wish the people would know about it.

It is no secret that Seth is completely inspired by the Simpsons. He usually does not 'steal' the premise from simpsons because he has no script in mind. Its usually because the entire show of family guy relies upon pop culture (simpsons being one of them) and letting the audience see how things would turn out if Seth Macfarlane was to do them. Simpsons is reserved. Seth takes his stories a few extra miles. He does the same in his flashbacks when he makes fun of events in shows that you normally wouldn't think of. Having seen both the simpsons and the family guy episodes, its amazing to see how different thigns turn out in both situations. That is not called ripping someone off. Family Guy is to pop culture and inspirational shows like what Scary movie is to the horror and sci fi genre, what naked fun is to spy action movies and what austin powers is to james bond. Family Guy usually spoofs everything ... but more than anything, the simpsons.

Mmm, bestiality.

And you watch both shows? As in Family Guy and American Dad?

I watched Sex and the City once, and I ended up with herpes.

I've effectively stopped with American Dad before I really started, heh. Family Guy, yeah, from time to time. In general, I don't really watch any shows consistently.

Inspite of my ragin' @ FG, Stewy is one funny mothafocker

Box needs to learn the same lesson as Butters. The Simpsons have done everything, and even a lot of their episodes are slight rip-offs of other shows in the past. Like what was said in the SP parody of it, the civilization in Lisa's tank was actually a direct take from an episode of The Twilight Zone. Family Guy uses some similar storylines, but their style and animation is very much their own. The Simpsons never used those pop-culture referance flashbacks like they do.

Now American Dad on the other hand is just offensive.

Well, I love Family Guy. So blah. I do hate American Dad, though.

I vote that Yes, Dear and According to Jim are the most asinine, offensive shows on television because of the way they brutally attempt to slaughter any brain cells I have if I tune in for more than a second.
