'Mr. and Mrs. Smith' Head to ABC
"Mr. and Mrs. Smith" was a hit at the box office last year, and part of that was probably due to the real-life romance between the movie's stars, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
ABC is betting, though, that its plot will be strong enough to bring viewers to a small-screen adaptation of the movie.
The network has ordered a pilot based on the movie, in which Pitt and Jolie played a suburban married couple who each find out that the other is an assassin when they're hired to kill each other. Pitt and Jolie, needless to say, aren't expected to reprise their roles for the series.
The movie's director, Doug Liman, and writer Simon Kinberg, however, are both attached to the TV project. Each will perform the same duty on the pilot and serve as executive producers along with Liman's producing partner, Dave Bartis.
Because of Liman's schedule -- he's an executive producer of NBC's forthcoming series "Heist" and has some other projects cooking as well -- "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" will probably not be among ABC's pilot crop for fall. It's expected to be a contender for midseason next year or fall 2007."
