Seems very unlikely imho, with JJK on track to get 31-31.5M (with volume 17 in october) and knowing TR has 1 more volume to release it needs to keep a little over 1M average for the next 17 weeks (accounting for its next volume doing 600-700k or so), which considering it is currently peaking and still barely hovering over that mark, seems like a pretty hard task unless something manages to push it further, but this is normally the part of its run where it'd start decreasing and considering the movie has already come out as well it's hard to see it blow up more than it is right now.

Would be fun to see a three-legged race though but I think it's going to end with JJK having a solid lead over KnY which will in turn have a solid lead over TR (which I think will end in the low-mid 20M, still great mind you, this would've won most "normal" years).

Its just fun to spew out posts and conspiracies otherwise the tracking will be dull. I understand its a difficult task but TR really has been doing very well and picking up steam even before the movie was released. It should be a close #3 and the Top 3 will be very distant from rest of the Top 10/50.

I get it, though honestly, that's kind of how the race for #1 usually is for manga, really.

The only time it really came down to the wire was 2014, and before 2019 OP had complete dominance, with pretty much every year besides 2013 and 2014 having its winner pretty clear very early in the year. The only exceptions with cool comeback stories would be 2019 KnY, and this year, with JJK, though this one became clear much earlier in the year. This year is one of the most competitive we've had in a long while, and seems likely to be the first year we not only get 2 series crossing the 20M mark, but we'll probably even get 3. So that's a pretty cool thing in my book already.

It'd be awesome if it came down to a three-legged race, though, and I'm rooting for it to make it close and entertaining. Although I don't think the odds for that look good.

Also - and this is pretty fresh - there was a big scandal with an important VA for tokyo revengers today (cheated on his wife aka LiSa) which may or may not reflect poorly on TR's manga sales. Hara's scandal a while back seems to have impacted negatively on Kingdom's sales in a fairly significant manner, and this is quite a bit bigger, though in that case it was the mangaka while in this case it's a VA, so that isn't directly related to the series. I hope it doesn't hurt the series, but it's possible it does.

Good to hear that these things can impact manga sales in JP. Would be interesting to see how TR does in next few weeks

Tokyo Revengers still chugging a comfortable 1m sales a week.

It should hits 1M with volume 1 with the next weekly chart !
It seems this year is more impressive than 2020 if we look at global sales... 3 series with more than 20M at the end of Oricon year and a great top 10 too...
Newbies are impressive too, Dandadan on top of that.

Tokyo Revengers #24 may get a first-print run of 1 million+ copies. If not it, then #25 almost certainly. Assuming it happens, it'll only be the second Kodansha property to ever have a volume get a 1 million first-print run, correct? Talk about perfect timing for Kodansha to have another major hit that basically took over from Attack on Titan ending. Although Tokyo Revengers has already surpassed AOT's biggest year ever.

And I REALLY underestimated My Hero Academia this year! The last couple weeks have been great. It might indeed be on track to have its best year ever, or at least come pretty close.

All of this, and how strong the manga industry is right now (strongest it's ever been), is all thanks to females and new audiences (like senior citizens who got into Demon Slayer) in general. The industry was mostly stagnant, even declining, for nearly all of the last decade (2010-2019). And then 2020 exploded to record the biggest year EVER for the industry, and 2021 just may top that.

There have been some Shonen series' with non-traditional audiences (young males) in the past, definitely, but the newer ones that have REALLY taken off are largely being bought or seen by female audiences. I read the other day that a whopping 77% of the third MHA movie's opening weekend audience consisted of females. That's a pretty insane number for a WSJ title. That's approaching the female % share that romance films receive in the market (80/90%).

While this is true, it does need to be noted that TR has much more going in its favor in terms yearly 'by series' sales (namely way more volumes than AoT had at the time, and a much lower starting point), and AoT at its peak was by far the bigger seller compared to what TR is pulling right now.


Actually no, Kindaichi case files had a 2.01M first print for volume 20. I couldn't find a number for Nodame Cantabile, however it definitely exceeded that mark seeing as volume 22 sold ~1M in just 2 weeks back in 2009.

There are some that may potentially have gotten there at some point (I'm thinking perhaps vagabond and sailor moon at their peaks), but getting first print data for old stuff is kind of hard, so who knows. I could look around and see if I can find something though.

Circulation numbers aren't my forte but I found 1 650 000 for Vagabond #19 and 1 080 000 for Say hello to Black jack #08.
