Re: NPD Thread August 2010 Xbox 3-peat!
360 is poised to stay on top through at least December, and maybe longer.
Wii is steadily losing steam. Maybe by the end of this gen, it will be routinely in 3rd place, and my old "Wii will finish last" prediction will be correct in an unintended way?
Software is really sucking it up lately. I worry about what this will mean long term for second tier games.

Man... that sucks! I'm guessing numbers will leak through here and there, though. Still it just won't be the same.

Re: NPD Thread September 2010 Reach 3.3 mil!
Those Sony numbers are minimum estimates. Every company decided to release their Sept hardware stats (NPD now leaves it up to each company to release their own), except for one.... Sony. I think we now know which company pressured NPD into going this route. Screw you, Sony! The NPD did say that the PS3 and PSP were up over last month on a per week basis, which led to people figuring the minimum stats for each. In other words, we know the PS3 did at least 283k, and the PSP 100k. Really pissed we don't get Dead Rising 2 numbers. I wondered if that was doing well so I can expect another sequel. This is the first month the Wii was in last place, and the 4th month in a row the 360 has been in first. No Move software in the top 10. As an accessory, Move charted behind the 360's 1600 point card and the PlayStation $20 card.

neo_wolf wrote: Rev wrote: http://www.vgchartz.com/ eww! As a historical database in general, I think vgchartz is pretty decent and it's the only place to get that stuff. Over the long term they can and do make adjustments for hard statistics like shipment stats and stats from companies like NPD to make those numbers more accurate. It's their recent and new stats that are really just decent-ish guesstimates. Problem is now that if they don't have some backdoor access to NPD stats, they are going to have a lot more difficult time in keeping their longterm figures accurate. Still, it's really all we got now for software.

Re: NPD Thread September 2010 Reach 3.3 mil!
3.3m for Reach is awesome, no question, but considering Halo 3 also did 3.3m (what a coincidence) 3 years ago with much less 360s around i feel it missed full potential there.

Re: NPD Thread September 2010 Reach 3.3 mil!
So, basically we have all the numbers we normally would have, except for a couple software titles. All I really want is DR2 numbers... still don't have those.
It was reported that the new Guitar Hero did a pathetic 86,000 units across all platforms. If Rock Band 3 performs similar, it will be the final nail in the music genre.
As for Halo's 3.3 million, it was a very slight bit below most analysts projections, but tied for the 2nd biggest US opening of this generation. The 360 version of MW2 (4.2 million) is the only title to beat it, but to be fair that came out in November, which is the holiday time. Being that it was a Master Chief-less prequel, I think the number is solid. Had it been a full fledged Halo 4 with the big guy, I'd wager it would have had better numbers.

No, we only got one software title number and only because it's frigging Halo selling over 3 million units. Not that long ago we got the top 10, now we'll only be privy to sales numbers if a company will feel like boasting with the numbers. It sucks! At least we got hardware sales numbers but there's no guarantee we'll get them for every month.

Re: NPD Thread September 2010 Reach 3.3 mil!
Sales numbers continue to roll in. Dead Rising 2 = 370k for all platforms (5 days of sales). Kingdom Hears = 225k. Metroid Other M = 173k.
Not sure what to think of the DR2 sales. That must mean it is around 600-700k WW after the first week. Probably a little lower than Capcom's hopes, but should be good enough to keep the franchise alive.

I share your worry that we're not guaranteed to get this much data every month, but now we've got all hardware (minus PSP, but who cares?), 3 exact software numbers (Halo, KH, Metroid), 2 total multiplatform numbers (DR2, Guitar Hero), and we pretty much can figure the Madden total and 360/PS3 versions within reason. I'll be ok if we get this much data every month!

For the year as a whole, the industry has generated $11.07 billion in new sales, roughly $900 million, or eight percent, behind the pace set by 2009. HardwareA severe 26 percent drop in year-over-year revenue from new hardware sales drove the overall decline in the October report. Sales of home and portable consoles brought in just $280 million in October2010, compared to $381 million for the same month last year. While NPD no longer breaks down hardware sales for specific systems, the group did reveal that the Nintendo DS was the month's best selling system. NPD confirmed that this number makes the Xbox 360 the best-selling home system so far in 2010, while the Nintendo DS remains the best-selling system for the year overall. SoftwareSales of new, boxed software were up six percent year-over-year in October, representing $605 million in revenue in 2010. The increase wasn't enough to help 2010 software sales on an annual basis, however, which currently sit at $5.54 billion and still trail those at the same point in 2009 by seven percent. Sales of online-enabled games seem to be driving the industry for the month. "Interestingly, unit sales of online playable console games were up 16 percent while sales of those that are not online playable were down 2 percent versus last October," NPD analyst Anita Frazier noted.

Re: NPD Thread October 2010 360 tops this year
Wow... NBA 2K hit a homerun. The combination of no real competition and Michael Jordan certainly did wonders for it. I think I saw that last year's did about 500-600k across all platforms, so they doubled that.
I think we now officially have the absolute VERY final nail in the plastic guitar game genre with both the new GH and RB performing horribly. Unfortunately, I think we're now going to see everything go to the dance genre with Just Dance 2 doing surprisingly well last month and Dance Central reportedly doing good this month.
360 is really on a roll and is now the #1 selling console for the year. With Kinect it should stay that way for a bit. Wii continues the downward spiral. It'll probably do respectable numbers this Nov and Dec, but Nintendo is clearly farting away its market lead with their thumb up their asses (was that too many butt references in one sentence?).

RPGs seemed to rule the month. As Tony said, the rock genre games seem to be winding down. Even though the keyboard does sound fun, I cant see myself pitching another $150 fo a peripheral with only 10 pushbuttons

Re: NPD Thread October 2010 360 tops this year
Yeah, same way. I'm intrigued by the keytar and pro guitar mode, but I just can't bring myself to buy any more plastic instruments at the moment.
I had to be one of the biggest consumers of music game stuff - I have over 7 guitars, 4 drum sets (broke a lot), and 4 mics (2 RB and 2 Lips). Plus I bought hundreds and hundreds of extra songs. So, you know if I'm like 'meh' on a new RB game, there is a problem with the genre.

Re: NPD Thread October 2010 360 tops this year
Pretty epic NPD on many levels: The 360 is just insane. That's a massive number. 2nd best November ever. Only the Wii beat it in Nov of 08. The Wii wasn't too shabby either as it stayed almost even with last Nov's figure (1.26 mil). The PS3 was very poor. Not only in hardware sales, but GT5 coming in at #8 - below NFS: HP - wow! Fable III increased from last month, which was unexpected. Black Ops at 8.4 million... holy shit... unbelievable. No Kinect games in top 10. I would've thunk Kinect Sports would've had a shot to crack the top 10 with around 400k in sales.
