Re: Another victory for the Arab Spring
Rebels have been taking areas of Syrian cities recently. The army seems to be able to overwhelm them though. Seems more like Iraq than Libya at this point.

Libya is a lost cause anyway.. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... rning.htmlThe desecration of a military graveyard, memorial or a battlefield is perhaps one of the worst things you can do in my eyes...

Re: Another victory for the Arab Spring
Another victory for the powers that be in supporting Islamists while continuing to cause disruption in the region. This is a perfect example of why we need to stop interfering in Syria. I'd rather have military dictators ruling that region because it's what a majority of those folks are used to and will be used to for the forseeable future.

Re: Another victory for the Arab Spring
People who thought getting rid of dictatorships will lead to peaceful western democracies overnight are the most idealistic fools of all entirety...

Re: Another victory for the Arab Spring
Well it was still a good thing. It is just going to take time. Look how long it took for European countries to go from monarchies/dictatorships to democracies. It took a century for most and others longer.

Re: Another victory for the Arab Spring
Exactly...
I was not saying there is no hope but it will take time...
Sometimes they will take two steps forward but take one step back....
Also why are people shocked and suprised that Islamic parties have taken over...
We must remember that the reporters we usually see are in the so called "Hip " areas of the countries they report from... So we get this assumption that the people in those countries all want western ideals and values... However the average person in these countries is actually a very traditional minded, religious person...

Re: Another victory for the Arab Spring
Indeed, though in general northwest Africa has never been dogmatically religious, by and large.

Re: Another victory for the Arab Spring
As I said it was expected...
We watch the news and see all of these progressive minded people in these countries...
However most people in these countries are rather simple minded. They would rather prefer thier country be guided by faith and old traditions then try "new" things.
I imagine the Islamists will control Egypt as they are quite popular outside of Cario and Alexandria.

Re: Another victory for the Arab Spring
I did read some articles of the new Egypt constitution and there is a lot of stoneage and faschist bullshit in it.
Women are now no longer women....no they are now sisters of men. Also the faschists of the Al-Azhar-Institute have now the right to control and block a law if its not conform with their understanding of the sharia.

As said before...
People in these countries are mostly simple minded folks who do not care about western Ideals of democracy, liberalism and all that.

Re: Another victory for the Arab Spring
It's either secular dictatorship or islamist dictatorship, with death and chaos in between, - there is no other way in this region. Make no mistake about it - there will never be democracy there.

Re: Another victory for the Arab Spring
Yeah I think until you have free markets, an open press, security and stability and a basic fair constitution there can never be democracy

Not sure how free was the market. No open press though. And as you see they don't need "basic fair constitution" as you would call it. They'll never have democracy, because it's not in the culture. They don't need it.

Re: Another victory for the Arab Spring
I agree...
Some of us here in the west are rather silly...
You really think after decades of being ruled by a Dictator that they were going to adopt Western Democracy.
Its almost certain they will all go towards islamic parties as they have been the only real opposition groups in those countries. The liberals in those countries are usually just a loose collection of various groups.

The free market...heh. Great buzz word.
Lebanon has a pretty free press, actually.
