A) I apologise for the slow down on the server. As some of you already know, KJ broke the daily user record on Sunday and then out of no where, proceeded to break Sunday's record yesterday. Today's traffic doesn't seem to be cutting down either as each day is passing, more sites are linking. It should however calm down in 2 or 3 days max. B) The additional traffic however, is not the sole reason why the forums are so slow. The forums have become much bigger than was ever anticipated. We are trying to isolate some memory issues that may be what is causing this slow down even more than the videos themselves. Due to this. Please note that forum will be shut tomorrow between 6pm EST and 12pm EST for maintenance purposes during which time, we'll be evaluating the impact it is having on the server. Thank you for your understanding and if you are not very understanding, then screw you : ) |

Any chance this may also fix the logging out problem, which seems to have gotten worse with the speed issues? |

So it will be shut down over 2 days? From 6:00pm tomorrow to noon the next day? Or did you mean noon-6:00pm tomorrow? PEACE, Mike. |

6pm to 12am tomorrow. sorry. 6 hours. at the same time, i'm trying to do something that may speed up the server a bit .. but i'm not gaining access to something important so i can experiment and see. |

so, per Baba above, the forums are bigger than was ever expected. As I always thought that some mentioned that alot of new posters, don't post in the forums. Wonder what would have happened if we had 100 or 200 members posting and using the forums daily? |

Chaos Goldie, Chaos. The logging problem will be fixed eventually. Sadly, I don't think it will be any time soon. I am planning on totally re-installing the forum. PHPBB is putting out a new version, 3.0 (we currently run 2.0). When that comes out, I will install it and such, I imagine the loging problem will then vanish. The beta version is set to launch in about a month, I will likely install a new board this summer. I'm sorry I can't do it sooner, but I simply can't seem to figure out what in the hell is causing the problem. |

Wait? Are you kidding? Loyal you're leaving us? I swear I'm not that hard to get along with. I only fight once in awhile and usually about having to go see movies I don't want to see is all. :-( You're not really stepping off are you? Thanks for looking into this guys. I'm actually thinking along the lines of Zingy right now, that new visitors to the main site might get frustrated and leave. Mostly because (I assume) downloading trailers already takes a long time. Who knows how long it takes now? bABA, send one of those worldofkj emails to everyone's web address about the six hour gap. Alot of people don't check this forum, and others may not have logged on the last day or two because of the slowness of the site, etc. You three admin/owners/whatever are staying right? ![]() |

dolce i've concluded that the forum slow down was facilitated by the videos but is not longer even related to the video. also, our smtp crashed it seems so i can't send out that general mailer. the maintenance tomorrow is becoming even more important. doubt it'll fix much but may shed light on this memory issue. |

I used to run a big brother forum on that back in the day. It sucked ass. Honestly its slowdowns were constant. |

I can't dissagree with you more, but you know that. The problems have little to do with phpbb and more to do with our server. |

Well it's not like I haven't tried a few bulletin boards. Phpbb is functional, but not exceptional and certainly It was one of the slowest ive tried [Invision BB was slower] Of course it depends on server speeds etc, and it was very much a variable thing [ie one day it was super fast then the next the thing was like a snail] It's a good free alternative to Vbulletin, but it has always basically moulded itself upon the standards set by Vb. I would use a phpbb again, but never for a central pursuit. I can't be without a vbulletin. VB isn't much faster really, but it packs in a lot more features into that loading time. You should try GZip. |

Heh, have you looked at all at phpbb 3.0? |
Author: | Michael. [ Mon Mar 27, 2006 11:10 am ] |
Post subject: | |
Yes actually. It's an improvement. I have no doubt it will continue to be popular because its highly functional and it isnt poorly coded like many other similar boards. But once again the improvements made on the PHPBB system were already made on the vbulletin system. The list of features/controls isnt really comparable. PHPBB continues to follow the path that Vbulletin sets. Id still use a phpbb, but i wouldn't be very happy about it after using vb |

But that is just the standard release, phpbb is meant to be able to change to each persons needs. If we want to mod our forum, add things specific to our forum, we can. Most of the things phpbb can do come in mods. Not standard in release packages like VB |
