Post subject:  Re: Question about a Box Office Game

I'm not sure on what aspects or roles of a movie I should include. The idea is that you have to 'start' at least a director, actor, actress, etc. I'm trying to decide A) how many active slots should each team have and B) what different roles should each team be required to fill:

Example Team Lineup:
Director
Producer / Executive Producer
Actor
Actress
Actor/Actress
Actor/Actress
Cinematographer
Screenwriter

You need enough active slots to make a 8-16 person league competitive. You want to get to the point where everyone isn't just picking people from the tentpoles, you'd also want people to have to dig into the second tier of films.

There will also be 'bench' slots, and you'll be allowed to update your starters. I haven't decided if you should be able to update starters monthly, weekly, maybe you get 1 update a week, I'm just not sure yet.

But yeah, this is really fantasy football for movies.

I'm also toying with the idea of being able to draft a production company, a theatrical distributor, etc. In the end, I need to decide what I want the possibilities to be, the commish for each league would be able to specify exactly what the leagues settings would be (ie maybe they just want to draft actors and actresses, or maybe they want a complex league where you draft everything).

I updated the first post to reflect what I have, open questions you could help with, etc.

Someone picking Warner Bros. is going to have a much better chance at getting points than someone picking Brad Pitt or Robert Downey Jr. Maybe there should be limits, like 1 studio per player, 2 actors per player, 2 directors etc.

Everything will need to be balanced. You'll only get a small share of a distribution studio's haul, while you'd get a big percentage of an actors.

I see.

And would this be calculated weekly or monthly or daily?

I don't want to spend too much time on this where it takes over my life. Weekly would be cool for me.

I guess I'm in.

Everything would be by daily box office. Let's say you drafted Tom Cruise, and he was in Mission Impossible which releases on July 2nd. You're season starts May 1st, and Tom Cruise isn't in any other movies during your season.

From May 1st to July 1st, Tom would earn your team $0 each day. On July 2nd, if Mission Impossible made $20,000,000, Tom Cruise would earn say, 30% of that, so he would make your team about 6 million. He would continue to make 30% of what Mission Impossible made each day moving forward during your season.

Their really wouldn't be a lot of time spent. You have to draft, that will take about an hour. Then you have to pick who are the active earners on your team. After that, you may check the site each day to see how much you made, and where you are in the standings, but there won't be a ton to do. You'll be allowed minimal changes to your starting lineup, so you'll have to strategize how to use them most effectively, and you'll be able to offer trades to other players, or search the list of free agent talent to see if there's anyone you'd want to add to your team.

No more than a few minutes a week of actual work.

Sounds fine. When would this game likely start?

This does sound fun Carl. Are you planning to create an automated version of this game?

Yep

I do want other suggestions for games that should be automated, throw some ideas at me.

Prizes for the winner?

There won't just be one winner. You create your own league, you play with who you want to play with. If the members of your league decide you want to all up the stakes and play for something, be my guest.

I thought you played against everyone. I dislike the "create your own league" aspect.

You have to "create" your own league. Because if you played against everyone, that would be a bitch to draft. What if you *hypothetically* have 100 people that want to play? You're gonna organize a 100 person draft? Are there enough actors/directors for 100 people to draft?

It's unlikely that even 20 people will play.

That's what people said about Fantasy Baseball when they first started it.
