WoKJ Moving Servers -- NEW SERVER
Over the coming day(s) WoKJ will be packing up it's bags and moving to a new server. Below you can find information on why we're moving, and how it will happen.
Why are we moving? WoKJ is hosted by XtinctDesigns, which sells hosting on a dedicated server it purchases from a company called LayeredTech. (Disclosure: I run XtinctDesigns.com) Unfortunately, LayeredTech raised their rates by 25%, WoKJ would have had to eat that increase, and since WoKJ already operates in the red, we began looking elsewhere.
Some good news! Moving servers is a pain in the ass, so it's generally only done when there is a need. We have a need, so we're going to move. One of the benefits of moving is that we'll be moving to a server with much newer hardware. We're going from a server with one processing core, to four. From 512MB of RAM, to 8GB.
How's it going down? 1) I'll take a backup of the site. 2) I'll take a backup of the forum. (this can take 8 hours) 2a) Any posts made after I take the backup will NOT be moved to the new server. 3) I'll restore the backups onto the new server (this can take 4+ hours) 3a) I'll test that everything restored correctly 4) I'll switch the DNS to the new server 5) Within 48 hours of step 4, everyone will be on the new server. Most users will be on the new server within 1-8 hours, the more remote of a location you live in, the longer it will take.
How will you know which server your on? There will be a post made in this thread by me saying: "IF YOU SEE THIS POST, YOU'RE ON THE NEW SERVER". For simplicity, I'll also update the title. If the title says Old Server, you're on the old server. If it says new, you're on the new server.
What if I need stuff on the old server? Once I hit step 3, I will post a direct link (via IP address) to both the OLD and NEW server. You will be able to use these links to access either server. The old server will remain online for aromatically 7 days, so if you need to retrieve information from those who take longer to switch, you can.
If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please post them here. I'll be checking and updating this thread as the process moves forward.
