Post Re: My novel (now available in paperback)
My first review from someone I don't know...

http://reviewarchives.tripod.com/id44.html

The young bard, Terin Ostler, is astounded when two squires arrive to take him into the Duke’s presence – even more astounded when he learns that he is the one foretold in a prophecy to ensure the Arch remains sealed to imprison the evil Thessi within. The atmosphere of the quest that follows is heightened by intrigues and by Terin’s doubts about who tells the true account of the prophecy, since he is not allowed to read it. The action is lively when the two squires, Rendel and Darlissa, face repeated attacks to protect the timid bard – while he gradually grows in maturity, courage, and character.

Terin’s sardonic observations bring the quest to life, and the suitably convoluted events of the final crisis close the prophecy and the story in fine style. The world of these humans, gryphons, elves, dwarves, and many other magic creatures is a constantly fascinating place for the lover of fantasy to discover within these pages.

Michael Ventrella says the basic ideas for the novel came from his role playing game site, but this is no raw transcription of random events but a tightly written and plotted work that will keep the reader enthralled until the last word is read.

Christopher Hoare - Muse Book Reviewer

*GREAT READ

My publisher just made a deal so that his books will soon be available for distribution like all books, instead of just through internet sales. So maybe soon you will be able to find it at Barnes and Noble and so on!

Now I just have to finish the sequel (sigh)...

Wait, I was just going to buy it from Amazon now. I don't really like e-format, though, so do you recommend I wait for a standard print copy, or will that take forever?

Also, let me know when it comes through in paper, too, and I can re-send my request to collections development at the library.

The Amazon version is for their kindle thingie only. It's an e-book.

You can buy it in paperback now` -- it's been available that way since July -- but it's "print on demand" which makes it a lot more expensive. (However, my publisher told me that my book was his biggest selling paperback for the second half of 2007, so that's cool!) You can only get that version through the POD publisher (through the link on my web page: http://michaelaventrella.com/books.php).

When the new deal goes through, you can order it like a regular book from Amazon.com or go to B&N or Borders or someplace and order it (unless they are smart and carry it like they would any other book).

I'm also included in a new book with essays about writing and screenwriting, which right now is only available in e-book but will be in paperback in about a week. Follow the link above!

That's odd. I got your book on Amazon awhile before you posted its availability there. Which brings me to the real question:

I'm high maintenance; How can I get it autographed? Can I send it to you in a package with a return envelope? Its rare that someone knows the author of a book. I'm not going to let this opportunity pass me by!

Really? When did you get it?

Heh! It feels weird autographing anything. Set up another NY meeting date this summer and I can sign it then... :)

The problem is that as I am working on the second book, I keep wanting to rewrite the first one.. I think it starts off too slow and takes too long to get to the action. Maybe someday when I get signed to a huge big-name publisher, I can redo it.

It already arrived a day or two before you posted the link. So I'm guessing I ordered it about four or five days before even that. I don't remember, could have been a week.

For a giant inside cover sig from you? I'll make sure 20 other KJers show up and we get a book-sighing going...in the public park!

Well, Mike, I hate to admit I'm so pressed for time now I won't be reading it over the next few weeks. But if you want feed-back after that, I'd be glad to give it. I personally hate (in movies, I don't read much fantasy books) when the action gets going to quickly. I fail to care who lives or dies. I'd rather 200 pages went to character building and if there was one battle at the end of those 200 pages, I'd still be crying my brains out if someone I liked died (or cheering if someone I didn't like died), and love the book.

To much action gets monotonous and fails to have any emotional resonance. You probably took a 'long time' getting to the action because you had to introduce and devlope the characters first, and that's very important to do.

I guess it was there for a while before my publisher told me!

Well, please understand that by "action" I mean "plot"... and yes, I wanted to develop the characters a bit more. What I really want to do is to take some of the exposition in the first two chapters and move it to later in the book. There is a lot of history in there that could have come in later, and would even have made the pacing better (in my opinion). But maybe I am just being too critical of my own work. I await your judgment, no matter how long it takes.

About 200 pages in. Should be done tomorrow, Mike. As I asked Roebrt, what kind of feedback are you looking for? That way I can try to be as constructive as possible and not just throw out generic stuff like 'I liked it,' or whatever. Mind you, I've never read fantasy novels in my adult life except for Harry Potter, so I might have completely different feedback than what you are looking for.

Well, two kinds:

First, a few paragraphs that I can place on my web page under "reader comments" (assuming they aren't "this sucks, don't read it.")

Second, real comments that I can consider while working on the sequel (which is taking a lot longer than I want because of my busy schedule). As someone who doesn't read fantasy, I'd like to know if you could follow everything well enough or if some things needed better explaining and so on. I hope the book isn't too specialized.

And go ahead and be honest; I'm mature enough to handle criticism. (I also know that not everyone has the same taste, of course, as we can see from the film arguments here on this board. There's no way someone who likes Armageddon and I are going to agree on what we want in a movie)

One of the nice things is that I have had some friends who don't read fantasy read it and really enjoy it, saying they started reading just to be nice but ended up really liking it and wanting the sequel, but then again, there may be others who read it and didn't like it and just haven't said anything to me.

As I go back over it, I am actually semi-embarassed because I think I am already improved as a writer. I'm pretty proud of the 2nd book so far. And if I ever get a big publisher to reprint Arch Enemies, I'll want to go back and rewrite sections and move parts around and so on.

But maybe that's normal for someone to always want to go back and make changes...

 I have no problem posting them public. They will just be kind of dry and detailed, so I kind of thought you wouldn't want me to. If you don't mind, I would have no problem posting them here (the book wasn't bad). I just thought you would prefer an email.

Whatever you want. If you think the dry and detailed stuff would be boring, then email them; if you think others would want to read them, post them.

I know I didn't write the next Great American Novel. It's just a fun little pasttime. If anyone is expecting more, they're wrong....

Dolce, I sent you an email. Thank you for your comments! Feel free to post them here, although you probably should take out the spoilers.

In other news, my publisher has just worked out a deal where my book will be available in Great Britian soon.
