What made it even better was the fact he's Indian himself, lol.

But, when you break it down, Stone was never that great to begin with; he just landed some quality scripts.

Stone wrote most of his movies.

Spielberg is overrated as a serious drama director. Raiders is great, but Schindler is way overrated. Just like Saving Private's Ryan(although, I haven't watched it in a long time). They're (probably) good movies, but they look as him trying way too hard to be serious and dramatic. Eastwood's or Coens' movies, by comparison, never feel that way, they're more 'sincere'.

Since mentioning Inarritu, I find Cuaron also to be overrated. At least for Gravity. And for some time I started to dislike Children Of Men, although I still find it quite masterful.

Also, Ron Howard. Enough said.

I would say that is the complete opposite of how Spielberg is viewed. He's the very definition of a trend setter and single handedly created the summer movie season PG-13 rating (This weekend 25 years ago!) etc. He made a film about the Holocaust and it was a blockbuster hit, if anything it's shocking how underrated the man is. And yes, he can direct the fuck out of a film.

We wouldn't have a forum to talk about how "inferior" Spielberg is without Spielberg. Irony at it's finest.

I haven't said otherwise. I said his "serious" movies are overrated, not his whole output. Encounters and Raiders are great. Duel is fantastic. E.T. is fabulous(until the 3rd act, sadly). He's a great filmmaker, no doubt.

I think Amistad, Munich, SPR are also among his best work.

Even films like Always, The Terminal, Amistad, Munich, etc. He's the one guy who gets shit for just making a better than average movie. There's at the very least 3 great scenes in any movie of his (which is basically the rule, he just always goes far and beyond)

And he came up with Pinky and the Brain. The man is going to be studied for as long as film exists.

Fair call. And, go fuck yourself. 24 films he didn't have part in the screenplay - 26 he did; of those 26 he only wrote a handful alone - Natural Born Killers, Any Given Sunday, had had a team of writers, most of the rest were with at least one other person.

The only redeeming input far as I can see is that he wrote two of his better ones solo - Platoon and Midnight Express. Most of what he's written was shithouse, so it kind of just proved the point more.

The Coen brothers don't direct "serious drama" - their stuff is nearly always quirky, if not primarily comedic/absurd/surreal; the only exceptions, maybe, are No Country For Old Men, A Serious Man, and True Grit - only one of which is primarily a drama.

Spielberg has The Color Purple, Schindler's, Amistad, Lincoln, The Post - notwithstanding the dramatic elements of his sci-fis/thrillers/epics - all of which are as well directed as straight drama can get.

That said, when he gets sentimental, fuck me, what a cringe-monger he becomes. Cannot stand the beginning and end bits of Saving Private Ryan. That said, Schindler's is so strong as a drama, it's practically a parody of one.
