I'd love Stallone to get back into directing, but not sure he has enough desire and energy to do so.

You may pick 3 options.

(list compiled with help from David)

I'm not going to select 1 option just yet.

I wasn't too much of a fan of Expendables, so Stallone is not a front runner for me.

But either McTiernan or Campbell would be front runners for me.

You can pick three.

I chose Stallone, Michael Bay, and Gareth Evans.

Nice, I like 3 picks...I'll think a bit about my 3rd one.

Definitely not Steven C. Miller anyway, even though he has the best first name of the bunch ;)

I haven't seen Evans film yet, but I hear good things about The Raid, so I'll go with him as my 3rd pick, coincidentally, they're next to each other in the poll.

I'd love to see McTiernan return one more time to direct, but from his Wiki intro:
Quote:
He pleaded guilty to perjury and lying to an FBI investigator in regard to his hiring of the private investigator Anthony Pellicano in late 2000 to illegally wiretap the phone calls of two people, one of whom was Charles Roven, a co-producer of his dystopian science-fiction action film remake Rollerball (2002). He was incarcerated in federal prison from April 2013 to February 2014. During his imprisonment, he declared bankruptcy amidst foreclosure proceedings for his ranch residence and struggles to pay legal fees and IRS tax debt. His last completed film project was the mystery-thriller Basic, released in 2003.

And Campbell will already be 75 years old this year, but I loved what he did with The Foreigner.

Evans seems the most suitable director that's also probable I think...fingers crossed for that.

If they get Steven C. Miller, it will be a disaster. I would have struggled to say that a few years ago because he made a few not-great-but-decent films in Silent Night and Marauders, and I thought he showed promise. But since then he's made stinker after stinker (First Kill, Arsenal, and now Hades).

I would love to see a Michael Bay-directed Expendables film. It would definitely be polished and with much more scope than anything before, but it will never happen. The most likely from the list is probably Evans, which will be great if he is allowed to sculpt it to his liking.

A Bay Expendables really could have the potential to be great, it just feels like such a stretch I don't feel like rooting for it.

Expendables 3 left such a sour taste in my mouth that I honestly I have no desire to see anymore movies in this franchise, but if I had to choose any of those directors it would be either be Evans, Campbell, McTiernan, Gibson or Berg. The latter two have especially shown me they can do gritty action pretty damn well.

I do hope they go back to R-rated...it just makes a difference.

They will. Stallone even said it.

Paul W.S. Anderson
Zack Snyder
James Wan

The 3 gigantic assholes (Riesenarschlöcher).

(Snyder would direct the hell out of an Expendables film)

Lol, McTiernan

Walter Hill or Berg are probably the best (realistic) choices.

Let's have Soderbergh direct it and bring in the Ocean's 11 and 8 Cast and make the craziest caper/action film ever.

If they want to put a little juice in the franchise (in America), get Peter Berg and Mark Whalberg (maybe as a bad guy).

If not, make it strictly for China and get John Woo and his doves.

The fourth one could use some style.

I think the more important thing at this point is the story rather than director (All 3 were nicely done, cinematography and editing issues)

At this point, I'd prefer them go the Logan route. I don't need to see 20 guys laughing at a bar in the end scene again. Take some real chances. Make them earn the name.

Never going to happen. You should know by now this franchise doesn't take risks. And the films are not nicely done. They are workmanlike and average. The best we can hope for is a better director and back to the R-rating (which is actually guaranteed after the last one).

What I'd like most of all is something that me and David were discussing the other day; a change in aesthetic and location. Ditch the warehouses-in-Bulgaria look, and go for a jungle mission, mix in a desert scene, or a snowy mountain one. Make it a true globe-trotting action film. Also something David said which makes a lot of sense is "if the entire movie was one mission. A very limited amount of time, instead of, "We travel here. Fight. We travel there," etc. Move away from the obligatory airplane scenes and just go for a type of in-the-moment intensity, similar to the back half of the 2008 Rambo". I think Gareth Evans would be best for that.

Also, cut the comedy bullshit. Go back to a more serious action film like The Expendables. It hurts the film when you have even the fucking villain smiling and laughing with the good guys on the poster.
