As STX Entertainment’s hit comedy Bad Moms heads towards $180 million worldwide at the box office, the global media company has announced its first film offshoot of the brand, Bad Dads, will be released next year on July 14, 2017. STX Entertainment’s Motion Picture Group has numerous takes on this spinoff and will reveal additional details shortly.

STX says that sequels on average are grossing 68% less than the originals. Instead, STX has chosen to focus on extending consumer passion for the Bad Moms brand with a series of film spin-offs, a reality television show, short form digital content, and a robust consumer products program.

Ugh. The first is bad, this sounds terrible.

It made $210m back in 2005. Financially, not making a sequel was a stupid move. Look at the all money The Hangover series made from the first being a breakout. You have to make the money when you can, otherwise the opportunity is gone.

I like it, but either way, you can't disregard that it made $210m eleven years ago! Not many films of that level don't go on to have sequels.

Although they're following in the footsteps of classics like Zoolander 2 and Dumb and Dumber To and making one now. Sub 50m is probably in the cards.

But I also think that those other films had cultural "legs" whereas Wedding Crashers was well-liked upon release, but probably not something people really quoted/talked about after a few years.

I hope it's good, but I question whether the audience has moved on from both the stars and the property.
