Fox developing combo Die Hard prequel/sequel
Quote: You can't kill Die Hard.
The franchise centering on the near-immortal NYPD cop John McClane is gearing up for its sixth installment at Fox, with Live Free Or Die Hard director Len Wiseman and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura teaming to develop the project, THR has confirmed
The film is still looking to attach a screenwriter, but the story is meant to be a prequel to the action series. Set in 1979, the newest addition to the franchise will show how McClane became the rough and tumble cop that audiences know.
The plan is for Bruce Willis to reprise his role of McClane, with a different actor coming in to play the younger version of the character.
Beginning with the first film in 1988, the Die Hard franchise has grossed over $1.4 billion at the worldwide box office, not accounting for inflation.
The last film in the series, A Good Day Die Hard, lagged in North America, grossing $67.3 million. It made up ground overseas for a worldwide total of $304.7 million. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-v ... k_20151014

Re: Fox developing combo Die Hard prequel/sequel
I wish they would just leave this franchise alone, though. The fifth movie showed that it's already getting shit. Why do a Terminator and run it well and truly into the ground? They should at least leave it with some dignity.

Re: Fox developing combo Die Hard prequel/sequel
Sadly, it is true. The only franchise I can think of that was left with some dignity is The Godfather, and while I do not like the series, and the third movie is not as beloved, it is pretty well regarded, and they didn't make one for 25 years (with nothing planned either). Then again, they did try and milk it with the PS2 game. So maybe there truly is no franchise to come out of Hollywood that has its dignity.

Re: Fox developing combo Die Hard prequel/sequel
Well, I am just looking for a franchise with its dignity in tact, not necessarily the best franchise. By dignity, I mean a franchise that hasn't completely sold out and/or doesn't know when to stop. The Hobbit movies are part of the Lord of the Rings world, so that would not qualify as still having its dignity.

Franchises with dignity, James Bond and Mission Impossible come to mind for me.

Even though they keep going and going, yes, they do still have their dignity.

Re: Fox developing combo Die Hard prequel/sequel
Facebook Comment wrote: The whole point of Die Hard was that John McClane was your average New York cop who just happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, so how are they going to make his origins (i.e. being an average cop) into an exciting movie without undermining the fact that he's an average cop at the start of Die Hard? It's nonsense. Exactly what I was thinking and couldn't be bothered to type.

They can always have Jai Courteney play the young Bruce Willis.

Sounds like something they might actually consider, though.

Since Live Free or Die Hard is my favorite of the series I am encouraged to see Wiseman attached to this one.

Re: Fox developing combo Die Hard prequel/sequel
What the hell is it going to be about? It can't be terrorists because then the first wouldn't make any sense. As a matter of fact, a major theme throughout the series is that he's an "everyman" and how does this keep happening to him. If he dealt with them before the first Die Hard that goes out the window. He also would've been much more equipped to handle the situations in each subsequent film instead of flying by the seat of his pants.
Which leaves seeing him as a rookie, detective, or a sergeant. So we're getting a glorified episode of Law & Order? Just make a sequel involving his wife and call it a day.

Re: Fox developing combo Die Hard prequel/sequel
Studios keep revisiting these aging franchises with this "Well... maybe if we do it THIS way..." mentality, and it keeps blowing up in their face.
Someday they'll learn. Or not.

Re: Fox developing combo Die Hard prequel/sequel
The film will probably suck, but the Die Hard name has meant too much success for them in the past then to stop using it now. I think they have the power to makes something good even. Unfortunately all they will care about is minimizing risks.
