Behind the Candelabra: Michael Douglas as Liberace!
Yeah, yeah, Behind The Candelabrais a TV movie (HBO) - - but when it stars Michael Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon as his young lover Scott Thorson and it's directed by Steven Soderbergh - - it's real movie news!
For those too young to remember Liberace - - here's a sample...
The first four minutes show how well he can play the piano, but skip ahead to 4:20 if you want to get a small taste of his overall schtick.

It was going to be a theatrical release too, but apparently was passed on by many studios because it was too gay? LOL. It's about Liberace. I think people would know what they were getting into. And with the talent involved it really should have been a theatrically released movie. Probably would have been an awards contender.

I'm a sucker for biopics, but if it weren't for the big names behind Behind The Candelabra, I would have thought of it as just another boilerplate TV production.
Still, I can't say I didn't have a grand old time watching Hollywood heartthrobs Mike & Matt flouncing about in their furs!
5 out of 5.

Perhaps ironically, if in Liberace's time the world had been the kind of place that could have aired a TV movie like this, it may have had a happier ending. And even after the story ended in the movie, Scott Thorson did not go onto a fairy tale ending - - he is currently back in prison for crimes related to his addictions started in his time with Liberace (BTW, Rob Lowe plays a deliciously creepy plastic surgeon).
It may be difficult to imagine nowadays, the cultural saturation that Liberace enjoyed in the 50's, 60's, and 70's - - he was everywhere! - - he appeared regularly on every talk show and variety show, had his own show, played a villain on Batman, and was even impersonated by Bugs Bunny (0:35)...
