Post All-Time Top 100 Movie List Thread (Update Time!!)
I think it is time to bring this back. Not just because of the recent Listomania running rampant in the Cinemania forum like a rabid rhinoceros. Not just because it's been many years since the last thread was murdered. Not just because we many new members with new opinions and new interests.

How do we know it's time to bring back the all-time top 100 movie list thread?

I'll take the first and try to get it done in about a week. I'm sure David and Algren will be in after that. As well as the new people and older members who wish to update their lists.

And I'll start tonight!

BTW: In case you weren't around/don't remember the last one, this is a thread where WOKJ users each post their own lists one at a time in small or large doses. There is no collective point system in place, nor will any of this have any impact on anything. Feel free to praise or heckle my, and every other users, choices. That's the fun part of the thread.

I'll put the queue in the second post.

edit* As the thread is now huge, I'll start posting shortcuts in this first post.

Post Re: Return of the All-Time Top 100 Movie List Thread
Before I start I want to recognize five films that I've seen in the past year that received an A+/5 stars from me.

Skyfall
Django Unchained
Life of Pi
Black Dynamite
The World's End

They may break through into the top 100 depending on how they age and repeat viewings. It's been an incredible 12 months, for me at least.

I'd also like to reserve this spot for the "I can't believe I forgot about" films that may turn up.

100. How To Train Your Dragon (2010)

Spoiler: show

I love animated movies, this is known. Usually Disney owns this market in quality and box office. This is the one of the only times another company produced an animated that soared to those hard-to-meet standards. Dreamworks decided to move away from their trademark pop culture references, and replaced that void with heart. The relationship between Hiccup and Toothless is a joy to watch. We watch as they become friends, take their first flight, use each other to become their fullest self. All while they are supposed to be killing each other. Is this a Romeo and Juliet inspired Bromance between man and beast mixed with a coming of age story? I think so and I love it.

99. Major League (1989)

Spoiler: show

This may only be a regional favorite. It also the reason Charlie Sheen will be forever beloved in Cleveland. Following years of losing seasons and dwindling crowds, a souless owner attempts to build the worst baseball ever assembled, so attendance will drop far enough for her to move the team to Miami. Given recent events, this is the doomsday scenario for Cleveland fans. This is a classic underdog story, giving you several hopeless cases to root for led by catcher Jake Taylor, expertly played by Tom Berenger. Major League delivers one of my all time favorite quotes. Charlie Sheen's Ricky Vaughn gets seduced by an older woman that turns out to be shortstop Roger Dorn's wife.Dorn's wife immediately informs him as part of revenge scheme. Jake and Rick manage to avoid him all game until Ricky is brought in a crucial situation in the 9th. Dorn approaches him in the middle of the inning prompting an "Oh shit" from Taylor. He takes the ball from Vaughn, as we're wondering whether Dorn will kill him now or just severely injure him. Instead he says "I only got one thing to say to you. Strike this motherfucker out." Hell yeah! That is baseball.

98. Beverly Hills Cop (1984)

Spoiler: show
Image

Image

What the heck happened to Eddie Murphy? is one of life's greatest questions. Delirious and Raw are two of my all-time favorite specials. Add that to the string of great movies and you have the top comedian in Hollywood. After that ... Beverly Hills Cop is Eddie's biggest hit and for good reason. Judge Reinhold and John Ashton manage to hang with Eddie the whole way and the local cops Axel takes under his wing. Fun story: Mickey was first offered the part of Axel Foley. After revisions took longer than expected Rourke was forced to drop out due to a schedule conflict. The part was given to Stallone. Old Sly wanted a harder edge on the movie though, Cobra basically, and dropped out two weeks before filming. I have a hard imagining this movie without Eddie. He is Axel Foly. Stallone could never pull off that laugh! I still haven't seen the sequels, should I?

97. Star Trek (2009)

Spoiler: show
Image

Image

The idea was to make a Star Trek movie for people who didn't watch Star Trek. Personally I could never get into any of the TV shows. Some episodes were good, but the ones that weren't dragged on and on. I pretty much enjoyed all the movies though, with the exception of the first which also had serious pacing problems. Thanks to some nifty time travel logic, Abrams and company were able to completely reset the timeline, starting with the death of Captain Kirk's father played by Thor himself Chris Hemsworth. A thrilling opening sequence sets the tone for a movie that has absolutely no problem with pacing. Each gets their own moments to shine and prove their worth. Despite the billions of dead Vulcans, this movie also to stay light hearted and fun. Michael Giacchino also provides a wonderful score, as he is known to do.

96. Princess Mononoke or Mononoke-hime (1997)

Spoiler: show
Image

Image

Image

That cursed boar used to freak me out. It's something about the way they draw pigs, because I also had nightmares about the pigs in Spirited Away. This one ends up spreading his curse to our Ashitaka and we are off. He gets sucked into a war between industry and nature. It would be easy to root against the iron miners that are destroying the forest, until we meet them and see they are good people just doing what they feel they need to. How does one solve the problem of human need and protection? With magic obviously.

95. Drive (2011)

Spoiler: show
Image

Image

The most recent film to make the cut and also the best of 2011. An almost romantic look at a life of crime. The rightfully iconic scene starts with a kiss and ends up with a boot in a skull. Blaring synthpop is heard as much as roaring engines. And it is love of another man's wife that gets the Driver in trouble. The consequences of that love are felt throughout the rest of the movie as the ultraviolence is knotched up to 11. The boot in skull is not even the most graphic thing we see. Drives satisfies your heart and bloodlust.

94. The Incredibles (2004)

Spoiler: show
Image

Brad Bird and crew mash up the Fantastic Four and Watchmen and make a movie that was better their adaptations. Most of Bird's movie are about being better than you are supposed to be. The Incredibles live in a world where being super is prohibited. In the aftermath it is an addiction that most cannot stay away from. If Syndrome did not take advantage of this, along with being so damn evil in general, one might even sympathize with his cause. It wasn't fair that some people were born with these incredible gifts and most weren't. Wanting to give people fake superpowers through technology would make a lot of people happy. Yet people like him would also get the powers and do what they do. So in a Disney we can make superhero analogies to addiction, economic unfairness and guns in a way, though that is more through the eyes of the present. There also a fun action movie here, and your usual Pixar heart.

I'll post my Top 100, but not in that style. I'm far too busy to dedicate that much time to it. I did save it in a Word document from when I did it on BOM, but the annotations from back then are so immature, that they'd need doing again anyway. I will list mine. In bold. In big font. :D

Excellent, then I need to hurry this along. :)

93. Inception (2010)

Spoiler: show
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/7f/Inception_ver3.jpg

Before South Park and the League of Hollywood Copycats made BWWWAAAMMM into a joke, Inception had a very thrilling soundtrack. Not that it is bad now, but one can't help but chuckle at the signature noise. Luckily Inception succeeds in many other areas as well. The biggest success would be turning a rather complex idea into something that all audiences could comprehend while they were watching it. We get what extraction and dream within a dream means in the opening sequence. So the concept of inception is never too big of a stretch, on screen. True to form, the Nolan also put together an all-star cast.

92. Pineapple Express (2008)

Spoiler: show
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/ca/Pineapple_Express_Poster.jpg

The Comedy Central Roast of James Franco was hilarious, but a little awkward. How exactly do you roast a man who can seamlessly go between big-budget blockbusters, weird indies and R rated comedies, and succeed with all of them. We knew James Franco could be funny from Freaks & Geeks, but even that was more of a dramedy. This is the first time that Franco is truly able to let loose, with Seth Rogen playing the straight man. Probably not the dynamic people thought they would see. Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Kevin Corrigan and Gary Cole join this crazy stoner-action movie mashup.

I wanted to do more, but I have to go. :( Will try to post down to #75 later.

91. Planet of the Apes (1968)

Spoiler: show
Image

Luckily I was young when I saw this movie. The ending had been spoiled a million times, but without context it didn't mean anything to me. Planet of the Apes holds up surprisingly well, especially the make-up jobs. Obviously they didn't have mo-cap or Andy Serkis in the 60s, but I think the human-looking apes are even creepier. It makes it kind of horrifying to see them perform experiments on intelligent animals, perform lobotomies say things like "There is no contradiction between faith and science... true science!" The apes fear man because of his savagery, yet their civilization develops most of the same bad traits. I'm sure there was an analogy to the plight of African-American's too, that has since been lost to time. And we know from the sequel that the Apes civilization eventually met the same fate as the humans.

90. Serenity (2005)

Spoiler: show
Image

Like most people, I was completely oblivious to Firefly's existence during it's initial brief run on television. I only ended up taking interest once the movie was announced. How often do failed TV shows produce feature films? It spiked my curiosity and I'm so glad it did. Firefly and Serenity are truly great experiences. Right away the movie provides us with the shows biggest unanswered question: exactly what the hell happened to River? The answers end up being just as horrible as we imagined. Along with that, we find out the even more horrible origins of the reavers. Serenity takes risks it doesn't need to and leaves us with a feeling that nobody is safe.

89. Inglorious Basterds (2009)

Spoiler: show
Image

If anybody could have this much fun with the National Socialist Party, it's Quentin Tarantino. He paints them red with glee. As usual, Quentin put together an all-star cast led by dynamite performances from Waltz, Pitt and Laurent who share the lead. "I want my scalps" is a line that will never get old. I've heard it dozens of times and still laugh when I think about it. He's having fun and we're having fun with him. It is Waltz, not Pitt, that steals the movie though. An all-time great performance and the beginning of a beautiful partnership.

88. Pan's Labyrinth or El laberinto del fauno (2006)

Spoiler: show
Image

There is a sense of unease, and not just when the vicious Captain Vidal is beating a guy to death with the butt of a pistol. Or when our heroine Ofelia is being chase by the pale men who wears his eyeballs on his hands. It comes from not knowing where Guillermo Del Toro will take us next. Every image is haunting, but can it possibly escalate even further? Yes it can. I also love endings that let the viewer decide depending on their own ideology. If the fantasy parts are just fantasy then this is a really depressing ending. Yet if we believe like Ophelia it is a magical movie, where she got what she wanted all along. I've gone back and forth, and right now don't even have a good answer.

87. Titanic (1997)

Spoiler: show
Image

Yeah I do love Titanic, wanna fight about it? The #1 thing that Titanic proves is that everything is better on boats. That must be how Titanic manages to be better than all of the direct adaptations of the Shakespeare work it's inspired by, Or it could be The Master's direction or the heart breaking score. Any one or all combined could be the reason, but I'll stick with giving credit to the ocean. I do admit that I would have preferred to see a Megashark take out the Titanic.

86. Up (2009)

Spoiler: show
Image

I believe this is the final film from the excellent year that was 2009. Pixar tries to make you cry early, it didn't work cause I'm a man dammit. Luckily it's not long until we're sky sailing towards South America where everything is bright and colorful. And Dug and Kevin live there! Our two new best friends. Up gives you everything you'd want in an adventure film along with Pixar's heart and message. If you're supposed to go live in a retirement home, do the complete opposite and fly to South America in your house.

85. Scream (1996)

Spoiler: show
Image

I like horror, but it's never been a favorite genre. One could argue that Scream is a horror-comedy, I am not that one. The charm comes from the characters being aware of the fact that they are in a horror movie. Yet even knowing the cliches, they cannot avoid falling in to the same traps as characters they mocked earlier. I think was Wes Craven's response to fans (and trolls) claiming they could survive his movies because they're so super smart. Even knowing all the cliches can't save you, just ask Randy. I also love the sequels, although none of them cracked the top 100.

I do not plan to write as much to justify my choices. I want to go straight for the jugular, Hemingway style. ;) One, maybe two crisp sentences for most of the films.

84. Grandma's Boy (2006)

Spoiler: show

I shouldn't have to justify this choice anymore after that scene. I'm going to anyways. That scene made me laugh harder than anything that had come before or after. The C-list actors that play various roles in Adam Sandler made a movie of their own. Funnily enough, it is the only Happy Madison picture to place in the top 100. So what makes Grandma's Boy better than comedy classics like Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore and The Waterboy? Well there is a driving chimpanzee mostly. There's also Linda Cardelinni doing a karaoke version of "Push It" by Salt N Peppa and "How did he see me?". At 18% on rottentomatoes I believe this is the lowest rated movie on the list. Way to go Grandma's Boy!

83. Hot Rod (2007)

Spoiler: show

These clips are not likely to sway anyone who wasn't already sold on them, but I posted them because they make me laugh. Hot Rod might be the most pleasant surprise I've ever had in theaters. Wasn't expecting that much and it killed! Years later and it's a perfect cable movie that never gets old. Samberg, Hader and McBride all shine here, along with great supporting performances from Isla Fisher, fellow Lonely Island member Jorma Taccone, Will Arnett as the dick boyfriend and fucking Ian Mcshane as Rod's stepfather who will only respect him if he defeats him combat. And most of the soundtrack is made up of Europe songs.

82. Ratatouille (2007)

Spoiler: show
Image

More Pixar and more 2007! And another film that I wasn't all that psyched up for. Yes it was Pixar, which demanded a theater viewing, but the year before Pixar had shown signs of mediocrity for the first time. We could have been heading for a losing streak. And it's about a rat who cares right? Me, apparently. The rat society was very compelling. Remy's initial job as a food sniffer is considered a great honor in ratworld, but he and we know he can be so much more. Michael Giacchino again delivers an enchanting score to suit Ratatouille's different environments in Paris.

81. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

Spoiler: show
Image

It's been said before, we really need to preserve Morgan Freeman's since so he can narrate my life story among other things. He could talk about this list when it airs on TCM. It's weird to think of Shawshank as a cult film, but it kind of is. It got seven oscar nominations and made a decent for 1994 $28.3M. Yet it's longevity could not have been predicted. Not even 90s corniness gets in the way.

Football is FINALLY on!

None of your choices so far are on my list, so they are invalid. ;) But, no, seriously, I am enjoying following the list, and such a list should obviously reflect the person, which this seems to do well so far.

I admit, I am a bit surprised to see Grandma's Boy...
