Exactly, his career did go somewhere eventually like Travolta. I never see Orlando Bloom anymore, harrnett stars on a series. What does nowhere mean? For instance, Chris odonnel stars on a show now but shit his career still feels ehhh

Bloom is still starring in big budget movies. He was in the Hobbit the past 2 years, and now he's shooting a next Pirates.

I don't think he ever was really huge, but he was a teen girl's dream, and he's lost most of that now. He's also definitely not a box office draw, but I don't know who else is part of 2 franchises the size of LOTR and PotC. He'll keep getting his parts.

McAdams should NOT be on this list. She also has managed to go away for a few years and come back and still be relevant. Other than the occasional hiccup, she's been really smart with her career choices in general.

Yeah, but that still totally qualifies as having gone "nowhere", especially when you started out as the biggest hero in the biggest franchise on the planet. Being relegated to voice roles only to be known by nerds of the 80s, is hardly the career one envisioned for him in, say, 1980.

Orlando Bloom should not be on the list. He started in Lord of the Rings and Pirates movies....and he is STILL in Lord of the Rings and Pirates movies. He's still in the same movies that he started with. I guess he hasn't grown into a solo draw, but how many people actually do that? Saying everyone that doesn't become the next Brad Pitt went "nowhere" is kind of unfair.

Chris O'Donnell, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Neve Campbell, Hayden Christensen, Mark Hamill, Jake Lloyd, Josh Hartnett, Matthew Perry, Sean William Scott....these are the type of people that are perfect for this thread. Anyone can put over a case for either one, but the fact is that these are all nobodies that once had a 2-3 year gap of being in big movies with a view to having a good career.

How do we feel about Meg Ryan? I've not seen here around in movies for years. The last one I remember is In the Cut, and that was, what, 2003?! Her career stalled big time.

Others I feel are worthy to be in this thread:

Carrie Ann Moss
Ashley Judd
Matthew Broderick
Thomas Jane
Rene Russo
Martin Lawrence
Roy Schneider
Gabriel Byrne
The Baldwins (minus Alec)
Cuba Gooding Jr.
Tim Robbins
Katie Holmes
Anne Heche
Stephen Dorff
Christian Slater

Aside from Katie Holmes, they just got old.
They counted on their looks for their early roles, and well you just can't keep up with youth.

Katie Holms, I don't think she was in anything big besides Batman Begins, and well then Cruise happened, and she never got her career back on track.

You don't get a pass just for being old (and none of them are actually that old anyway). Look at Jane Seymour and Jane Fonda. Still going strong.

And none of them counted on their looks, in my opinion. Carrie Ann Moss just never grew out of being Trinity. The rest are all capable actresses that just went nowhere.

These are not my rules, but 40 is old in Hollywood.

And I guess, they're out of the limelight because they're not called Jane then, lol.

They would be semi-capable then...Meg Ryan had this romantic comedy thing going on in the 90's, but none of them could carry a movie by themselves, and so people stopped asking for them to star in a movie once they lost their youth.

I think age has nothing to do with it, unless they choose to be mothers, and then they just stop getting sent scripts because other young women are coming through all the time. But Heche is a lezzer, so the mother excuse isn't apparent with her. Even if they do become mothers, they still qualify for the "went nowhere" class.

Some of those listed are just TV stars. I know once upon a time that the big dream was transitioning from TV to film, but ten or fifteen years ago, that was the impossible dream. So people like Matthew Perry, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Sarah Michelle Gellar are just wannabe movie stars who struck gold a couple of times but have continued to go back to television where they belong.

Jake Lloyd was recently arrested for reckless driving. Maybe he was trying to get away from his bad acting.

Age is everything for actresses. If you have a big career in your 20s and early 30s, it's more difficult to transition that later in your career. The only thing more difficult is to transition from a child star to a legit star.

As I said, a case can be made for everyone if you try hard enough.

TV star or not, Matthew Perry has done nothing since The Whole Ten Yards franchise, and that was a fairly known two-film franchise, and he just hasn't capitalised on it. Saying it doesn't count just because they come from TV is a cop out as most actors start on TV anyway. If George Clooney can do it, so should anyone be able to.

Age is a cop out too. Loads of actresses that were big in their 20s are still working into their 40s. Cameron Diaz, Gwyneth Paltrow, Courtney Cox, Teri Hatcher, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Aniston etc. Age means nothing anymore. It's about talent. If you don't have it, you join the "went nowhere" list.

Clooney is the exception to the rule, as he's always been for 15 years. TV is different now. It doesn't carry a stigma. But way back, especially in the 90s, being a star of a TV show attached a stigma to you that the majority could never shake.

And I mean a STAR of a popular TV show. I know most come from TV in some form. Jennifer Lawrence starred on The Bill Engvall Show. But it wasn't popular and no one paid attention to her until Winter's Bone.

This brings up another question: what constitutes a franchise? I say at least three films. I don't think anyone views The Whole Nine Yards as a franchise, especially since the second of the two films bombed.

Just an aside.

I think this is pretty clear from the start, and most of the careers that went nowhere is because of the lack of that (talent).

It is indeed quite peculiar though, how some get quite huge at one point, and then totally fizzle into oblivion. And it seems we pretty much named everyone already.

But if it's about talent, why are some able to succeed in the first place? Because they're young and attractive. Age. Once they age, we don't have the pretty face and good body to look at anymore and they're gone. Goes for young actors too, not just actresses.

Three films make a franchise, definitely. But in a thread I created before, there seems to be mixed opinion (or maybe it's just Thegun being, well, being Thegun).

Maybe the public just don't take to them, just like Josh Hartnett etc. It's just far too simple to say that age is the reason when there are many, many famous 40 or 50-year old actresses that were also popular and well-known in their 20s.

Unless he rises from the grave it's going to be hard for Roy Scheider to be popular again.

It says Roy Schneider.

It's wrong even as a mistake.

Obviously I meant Rob Schneider. I think stuffp got it...again.

Huh?

He was nominated for a GG and Emmy for Ron Clark. Was given 4 series to star in, and currently stars on a hit show. I mean if anything Friends was so popular at the time and Bruce Willis guest starred on it for 4 episodes in the middle of The Whole Nine yards marketing.

Whole 10 was a major flop. He is a TV actor plain and simple.

Clooney got very lucky and could handle some drama, which Perry really can't. I mean Clooney's first 5-6 movie roles were awful critically and financially. He very smartly put himself with strong co stars like Three Kings, Perfect Storm, Ocean's Eleven. Majority of films he's been the major draw have flopped.

Then how can you make an argument like that?

There has always been a correlation between TV stars not transitioning into films. Especially for comedians playing a role. You see that character for 24 weeks straight its hard to distinguish him as anything but that role. And you hate it if he/ she isn't doing it.

Out of the 6 characters on Friends all were in movies. None are starring in anything now except Aniston. Perry, Kudrow, and Cox had boosts when they were on the show (Scream, Whole 9 Yards, Analyze this) but wisely stayed in TV afterwards or ensemble films.
