Favorite Tarantino Character?
With Django around the corner it's hard to stop thinking about Tarantino movies. I know there already exists a thread for this topic, thegun made it in fact, but it predates Inglourious Basterds so it is time for a new one.
Name and/or rank your favorite Tarantino characters.
Mine would be the following
1. Col. Hans Landa 2. Jules Winnfield 3. Lt. Aldo Raine 4. Pai Mei 5. Beatrix Kiddo

Yeah, it is tough, for me outside of the top three, but I have to give my shoutouts to Bill, Mr. Pink, Butch, Marsellus Wallace, Bridget von Hammersmark, Hugo Stiglitz, and Winston Wolf

1. Stuntman Mike (The fact that the film itself is just ok makes him stand out more) 2. Mr. Blonde 3. Butch 4. Vincent Vega 5. Seth Gecko

Thegun, I like your inclusion of Butch in the top five, but what are your reasonings for Vincent Vega?

Hans, Jules, Ray Nicolette, The Bride, and Gogo Yubari would be runnerups too. A lot of great characters.

I just love who he is. He's not a hitman because he was in the army or training. He's more a guy that smoked pot and watched movies, couldn't find a job and just became a hitman. There's a lot to really say about someone who seems like he's past his prime somewhat, and Tavolta and his career of the time just really resonates. You never wanted Travolta to be washed up and the role is really one part of an excellent ensemble your just grateful he was in that role, because he owned it and he anchors the film. The adrenaline shot scene is my favorite scene of the entire film, and Travolta plays it so real it's hilarious and frightening at the same time.
I was still hoping for the longest time that the Vega Brothers prequel ever came about.

Who was the older brother? Vincent or Mr. Blonde?

That I don't know, I almost hoped they were twins, haha.
Pai Mei and Hattori Hanzo aren't really Tarantino characters, they are actually not even that different from their other movies. I haven't seen Django yet (I mean the original one) but I know the actor who played him is in it. I'm excited to check both out.
Darth, why Marsellus? He is certainly cool. Is it the bandaid to briefcase parallel?

Re: Favorite Tarantino Character?
Yeah, Wallace's cool natured persona really resonated for me. He did not just play a rough and tough, take no shit kind of mob boss. He clearly had a moral code embeded within his criminal exterior that attracted people as righteous as Jules to give him respect even after Jules' turning point. Furthermore he could have very well killed Butch with that shotgun down in the pawnshop basement but chose not to, and all of it made sense. Because he had character and class and stood out amongst other mindless criminal bosses so often seen in so many other movies.
And then, as you mentioned: he's cool. Thank Tarantino for this one, but he had some great lines throughout the film including an awesome monologue to Butch about pride. But the way he delivered it almost reminded me of Barry White which so perfectly matches the aesthetics of Pulp Fiction that someone else might not have been able to achieve.

They were in other movies? That makes sense for Tarantino, but I did not know this, elaborate. What movie, and when did they come out, the 70s no doubt.

Quote:
Quentin Tarantino stated in the supplementary material on the Kill Bill DVD that the character was named in tribute to Sonny Chiba's former role as Hattori Hanzō (the real-life historical 16th-century samurai) in Shadow Warriors (Kage no Gundan). The joke is that Chiba played multiple generations of the character: even when the character actually died, the next installment would shift to covering his descendant, also named "Hattori Hanzō" after his famous predecessor. The implication is that the "Hattori Hanzō" seen in Kill Bill is the current descendant of the Hanzō lineage in the present-day. Tarantino went so far as to call him Hattori Hanzō the XIV.
Chiba is also the influence for Jules famous bible verse in Pulp
And the guy that played Pai Mei, was in a lot of the films he was featured in played in multiple times in old Shaw films like this one.

I have not seen Kill Bill in some time, is Pei Mai and Hanzo one in the same, or is one of the sword maker and one the master of the one-inch punch?

I always had a soft spot for Mr. Pink out of the Reservoir Dogs crew. But Aldo Raine for me is his best.

Hans Landa. An incredibly written character incredibly acted by Waltz.
