BMP wrote: Which one is your #1 I've probably watched it at least once a month for the past 20 years. Still have the original VHS (two copies), too. BMP wrote: 43. Animal Crossing Does it have something to do with the nintendo game? Yep. Honestly, it may just be the best video game adaptation ever, at least by how like the game it really is. |

Persepolis tied with Spirited Away. Can't choose. |

I forgot to add Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole to my list of favorites - - a seriously underrated movie. (BTW, I would rate it as having one of the worst film titles of all time. I can never remember it, it's confusing, and far too long.) |

Bradley Witherberry wrote: I thought this thread was non-Disney too?!? (If it isn't, it should be.) I don't see why. Pixar is very much its own institution with, for better or worse, its own authorial voice. Same for DreamWorks' in-house animation studio. I don't see any reason films such as Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Chicken Little, A Christmas Carol, The Princess and the Frog, Tangled, and Valiant should be ineligible simply because they have a corporate tie to Pixar via Disney. |

David wrote: I don't see why. Disney is still a powerhouse of animation - - it could easily have it's own thread separate from Pixar and Dreamworks. Imho, including it takes the meager remaining spotlight away from the smaller animation houses. |

Your claim isn't borne out by the thread, though. For example, I see several references to Persepolis and Studio Ghibli films. |

It's your thread, but then that's a very sad statement about current plight of Disney animation. (BTW, Valiant (a very underrated film), was only distributed in the US by Disney - - it's a Vanguard Animation production.) |

Agree, it's a wonderful film and soooo underrated Bradley Witherberry wrote: David wrote: I don't see why. Imho, including it takes the meager remaining spotlight away from the smaller animation houses. Correct, despite of its flops, disney is still seen as the animation kingdom, when people hear about a new animated film, the first thing they do is associate it to disney, that only shows how powerful the studio is |

David wrote: of the last fifteen years? My choices: 1. A Christmas Carol 2. Rango 3. Coraline 4. The Adventures of Tintin 5. Howl's Moving Castle I wouldn't count Christmas Carol or Tin Tin as animated; they were motion capture. You'll note that the Academy doesn't consider those animated either. |

I disagree. I have no problem categorizing those pictures as animated. Golden Age Disney animators almost always used real actors and footage of real animals as a reference. This is just an evolved form of an age-old animation practice. The Academy also deems indie films released on demand before theatres ineligible. But they're still films. |

The animators who vote on "Best Animated Film" certainly don't consider them animated, as no motion capture film has ever been nominated. |

Would you call what Andy Serkis did in Rise of the Planet of the Apes and The Adventures of Tintin acting? Because no motion-capture performance has been nominated for an acting Oscar. |
