Walt Disney Pictures has hired the rock singer, guitarist and producer Jack White to write, produce and perform the score for the upcoming “Lone Ranger,” the company announced Monday at the CinemaCon theater owners convention in Las Vegas. The film, directed by Gore Verbinski (“Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Rango”), stars Johnny Depp as Tonto and Armie Hammer as John Reid and is set for release on May 31, 2013.

The score will mark the first time Mr. White, known for his arch and minimalist garage rock, will do an entire score.
