Just realized this was happening...
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0844467/Not sure how I feel. It's my favorite novel of all-time. I hope it's done justice. (I've never been able to find a copy of the version made in the '70s with Marilyn Hassett, though I hear it's mediocre.) I've always wished Sofia Coppola would just do it because she would nail it. Would be the perfect pairing of director and material.
Julia Stiles is beautiful and talented and no doubt deserving of a rich, rewarding role, but she seems entirely too old to play Esther? The character is, I believe, 19 or 20. I can't remember right now if the novel gives an exact age, but she's a college student. Stiles will be 31 or 32 when this is shot. Seems wrong. Too big an age difference, and Stile seems every one of those years, if not slightly older. Not a person who can easily play way younger. It will change the dynamic too much. The Bell Jar isn't a quarter-going-on-midlife crisis story.
There's no director listed. Maybe the project has stalled. I almost hope it has. It doesn't feel right. I'm afraid it would be low rent.
